Default unable to connect to internet explore

tried to download "Microsoft tool to provide Better security for Windows programs"!
in doing so, my machine rcv'd a virus and now i am not able to connect to internet explorer/yahoo email, and thus i am having to use my sisters machine. i have tried running a malware cleaner , but to no success ... i need help in cleaning this virus out of my machine. i am in the middle of searching for new employmet and i need my machine ... is there someone out there that can help me ... please do. i am not perfect and yest i may have contributed to this but i am needing someone to help me get this issue resolved.

The real key however is fully understanding how and from where the infection originated so you can take steps to prevent the same thing happening again.
