Default PDF what is 'markup' vs 'edit'.

In today's Freebie, pdfescape, which according to the article, allows you to edit pdf files online. However, most comments state:
"PDFescape does _not_ allow you to edit the content of the PDF, but only to add markup to a PDF".

What exactly is 'markup'?

Without examining the actual features of the program in question......

Editing = changing the actual content. e.g. Rewriting or entering new text, adding/removing images/ etc.

Markup = annotating the text. e.g. Highlighting, underlining, whiting out or blurring text, drawing arrows, adding notes or comments to the margins etc.

Thxs Ritho. Makes perfect sense now. Markup allows you to literally mark the text with a variety of tools, vs. Edit where you can actually change the text. Now I have one more word to add to my 'geek' arsanal.
