Default Cathy and Online Armor?

Hi

I've used file cataloging program called "Cathy" for many years without any alerts from the various security programs that have been installed during all that time.

Recently I've been testing the Firewall program called "Online Armor" and as soon as I started to enter something in the Cathy search bar Online Armor popped up alerting me that, "Cathy.exe is trying to record keystroke. A keylogger can compromise passwords or other sensitive information."

Has anyone else ran into this same warning, especially with any other dedicated anti-keylogger program?

I feel that "Cathy" is probably safe to use but some more information about this would be appreciated.

Thanks.

PS.
Currently using Windows 8.0, Avast! Free Anti-virus, Malwarebytes, SuperAnti-Spyware and Online Armor. Just recently ceased using Norton's Internet Security, but have also run Cathy while using it and many other security programs like Avira, Nod32, Trend, Spybot, and probably others I've long since forgotten.

I'd say this is a false positive unless maybe you recently reinstalled it from a different download source?

Hi Midnight Cowboy,

Thanks for your reply. I thought of scanning with Virus Total just after I logged out yesterday. I uploaded my copy of "Cathy" to Virus Total and it came up clean. I might have a look if I can find a free or trial anti-keylogger and see would it thinks of it.

Cheers,

If my memory is correct, Online Armor started life as a HIPS program to which a firewall was added later. Normally for this type of software the reverse is true, i.e. something starts life as a firewall to which a HIPS component is added. Lots of technological terms are used to describe how HIPS operate but in basic terms they "guess" the threat level of something by the nature of how/where it installs and interacts with the host system. I'm not familiar with Cathy but maybe part of how it operates is characteristic of a keylogger.

I wouldn't bother with the paid for programs recommended by sites that receive money from sales such as Top Ten Reviews which is purely a marketing scam. Zemana and SpyShelter though both have free versions and will be more than capable for a second opinion.

I installed SpyShelter Premium 9.8.0 trial version and it had no problems with "Cathy". I also asked about the program on Emsisoft forum and received the following reply:-

"Thank you for the additional information. This program is not being detected by Emsisoft Anti-Malware/Internet Security. Online Armor is no longer being actively developed, so the simplest solution here is to mark the application as Trusted to avoid further alerts."

I'll keep "Cathy" on my HDD but as I'm really impressed with Glary Quick Search I'll probably use that more often.

Many Thanks.

Cheers.
