Global processor shortage?

So my IT department is having issues upgrading/replacing our old(er) Computers - at least the more powerful ones - due to an alleged global processor shortage. I've read about the memory shortage a good number of years ago as well as the GPU shortage in the last years, but I've never heard or read anything about a processor shortage. Have any of you heard anything of the sort or can I safely assume that this is just a lazy excuse from our fairly incompetent IT department?

There is an Intel CPU shortage;

JP Morgan says Intel's chip shortage is worsening and will hurt fourth-quarter PC sales by up to 7%;

"Intel blames 14nm shortage on 'unexpected' PC market growth"

https://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer...-market-growth

Makes you laugh really. First they predicted tablets would kill the rest of the market and how did that work out for the 'expert' market analysts? :D

Now everyone is surprised that folks don't want to live their computing lives via a smartphone.

With serious child vision issues from smartphone use due to eclipse obesity I who knows nothing 'predict' there is life left in the real PC market for a few years yet.
