How much consensus do you actually want? There is a ton of evidence linking social media use to cyberbullying and increased rates of suicide.

This is not to say that many of these would not have been bullies in "real life", and probably are, but their ability to reach many more people via social media is huge.

The suicide stats speak for themselves.

And maybe there will be a study to prove how Mozilla had a share in that suicide trend!

Well it helped that Canada changed the rules about how youth crime is classified and recorded. There are now a whole range of "Extrajudicial Measures" that "aim to hold a young person accountable without proceeding through the formal court process". This is great because the police and courts can spout lower figures and of course it costs less which is usually a major consideration. Bit like the UK "care in the community" program that allowed certified nutters to be let loose on the public because the estimated financial cost of the fallout was less than keeping them in secure accommodation.

Suicide is not something to be treated in a lighthearted manner and studying it is rarely funny especially as it is necessary to consult with bereaved family members in order to collect and authenticate the data.

It is a tool and it depends how it is used.
In America "guns kill and should be banned" will be argued that it is the people not the guns.
"Speed kills" is seen, but it is innocent,it is the people speeding (and not in control) that cause the accidents. Planes are FASTER and yet the safest form of transport.
I don't use social media (as such), but I do spend a lot of time on forums talking to people. It is unlikely that social media is responsible for the bullies, but it IS likely that because it is anonymous it brings out or amplifies those tendancies.

Not "laughing" at suicide or depression trends, just trying to sway the conversation back to original thread.

Well it was posted in the ChitChat forum "The place for all off-topic chat, gossip, and whatever".
