Default What's in a name? Microsoft can't decide

Microsoft seems to be having a hard time deciding what to call the apps that were introduced with Windows 8 and how to distinguish them from regular desktop programs. They began with "Metro" apps and have now gone through half a dozen name changes. As Woody Leonhard writes, "A note on terminology: What used to be known as Metro apps, then Windows 8 apps, Windows Store, modern, then universal apps, are now simply called Windows apps -- this week anyway."

For whatever reason, Microsoft is just not very good at naming things. Another example is "SkyDrive" which had to be changed and became "OneDrive". The naming of Windows itself has been inconsistent. Sometimes a number, sometimes a year, and in the case of "Vista" no mention of Windows. And now we are going from "Windows 8.1 Update" straight to Windows 10.

Well, errr... Microsoft had no choice but to rename SkyDrive because they lost a case in the British High Court over the use of the word "Sky". However, I do agree Microsoft has a knack for muddling up their names. I think Microsoft needs to take a serious look at this. It looks too amateurish and unprofessional for a big corporation.

Yes, as I said, they had to change the name. They didn't do enough investigation of trademark conflicts before they started using it.
