Default Google+ becoming a serious social site

According to this story, Google+ now has 500 million members and is becoming a serious rival of Facebook. Do you use Google+?

No. But then again, I don't use Facebook either.

Vic, may I ask which you prefer?

I like google+ but find myself stuck on facebook because of friends. But for non-friend posts, I use google+. I like it more than twitter as well. I see google+ as a mix of fb and twitter. Nice way to stay in contact (like facebook) and good way to pass information (like twitter)

I am not a fan of social sites but I use them because anyone involved with technology is pretty much forced to. I post as little personal information as possible. I prefer Google+ and I post technology things there off and on for professional reasons. I actually dislike Facebook but I also use it because so many other people do. I only use it for technology stuff. In fact, I have kept my family members from subscribing to my page.

Hmm... that says something to me. Would you care to elaborate as to why Vic?

For myself, I've resisted setting up any accounts with Facebook, Twitter, Google+, et al. It's not that I have anything much to hide but I dislike intrusiveness.

Nothing against my family. It's that I have no faith that anything is private on Facebook. I have other, safer ways of interacting with my family. Also, I am not interested in having everything I do documented forever on the Internet. It's bad enough that everything that I write in forums like this one is captured and stored forever who knows where.

I do have an account on Google+ with my profile setup, but I hardly ever use it. I do use Gmail and Google Reader, but I rarely use Google+.

I mostly use Facebook, since my friends are there. They are on Google+ too, but they too don't use it that much.

One reason for not using Google+ is that already checking on Facebook takes up lots of time, and I do not want to spend any more time on another social site. One is enough for me. Also, if I was to use both, I would be posting duplicate stuff on both sites, for friends at both sites... again, unnecessary time consuming.

I am not against the idea of social networking, it's a great thing, because I can keep in touch with my friends on a common platform, where they can know about what's happening with each other, which is otherwise difficult over emails, phones, etc. Having a common platform for all is a great advantage.

Many people think that if you go on social sites, you lose your privacy. It's not like that. Atleast with Facebook I know that you can tweak the settings to make your profile as private as possible. It does require sometime though, but that is true for security software on the system too. You have to spend that much time to get things right, and it's important to do that.

I am becoming a bit irritated with Facebook nowadays, specially with the introduction of the share feature. People share so many things, and so much, that it's quite difficult to keep track of the important information. It's like a chaos of information. I find myself spending quite less time on Facebook nowadays. Also, with my slow PC, it's really slow to browse Facebook, and I have noticed that using Facebook makes the browser really slow, because of loads of information updating every minute and second.

Still, Facebook is a good platform for me to stay in touch with friends, family, and also take part in group discussions for like minded people.

I find Google+ a bit odd to use, and I didn't like it much. Maybe I haven't spent much time on it, that might be a reason.

I keep an account on Facebook basically for getting in touch with friends and relatives but I'm not an active member. Just log in to see what's happening once in a while.

More often I log into my Google+ account to follow up on Linux, Android, software news and updates, besides other interests such as great photos. Some of them are also available on Facebook and I prefer Google+ for its better layout and features.

Among others, these are the posts I follow:

Thanks for your input Anupam - it is very informative. I've been toying with the idea of setting up an account with one of these SN sites for a while now. I think the kind of insight provided by yourself and others in this thread are just what I need to help me make up my mind.
