Google is halfway there with Android shipping on tablets. Just add a taskbar with a "start button"... Just too bad it wouldn't be x86-based.

There is nothing wrong with Windows until it doesn't do what you want it to. Its an old song, been a chart topper for years. I remember people complaining about Microsoft when Windows was a concept. Windows never does enough for techies, but somehow it continues to survive and control the market. May stay that way too as long as developers are more focused on web and smart phone aps than the OS. I think if a company like Google launched an Apple like company that offered a good PC OS it wouldn't take much for users to jump the MS ship. But like most developers, Google would probably get raked over the coals, chewed up and spit out for every little design flaw causing a reputation vortex that they likely would never return from. May be that is why no one (with clout) has challenged MS in the PC OS market. Well IBM did at first, but look what happened to them... Or is the real reason because the PC market has a limited life Windows 8 proves it?

Microsoft seems to be getting alot wrong lately , with Win8 and then Xbox one launch, mis-judging what customers want . The pre-order sales must have told a sad tale for the Xbox one to turn into the Xbox 180. I'm looking into buying a new PC ( I only have a laptop at the moment ) and I know I should move with the times and all that but I have zero interest in getting a Windows 8 PC.

End of an era? PC sales continue to collapse

"Following the worst quarter ever for worldwide shipments of personal computers..." sales continue to fall. Right under the headline is a big picture of a Windows 8 screenshot.

I guess the idea of trading multitasking for smearing the screen with fingerprints still isn't catching on. Not that stalled PC hardware development and tablets have helped.

Once the tree begins to shake, all sorts of apples can get thrown off.
