The Firefox experience for me is choppy too but since I prefer Chromium anyway it has never been an issue.

You can install Nautilus and use that for your file manager if you prefer.

Everything in Linux is configerable so you could try changing your individual fonts by going to Control Panel - Application Appearance - Fonts.

Widgets overall can often be a pain because not all of them will be compatible with the latest release of KDE, or your particular graphics setup. This is why I use Superkaramba for all my monitoring including CPU, RAM, system temps and network speed. There are dozens of themes available from KDE Look or like me you can just grab a standard one and customize it.
Buy a Hoover and prove technology sucks.
