I honestly think this is the best policy unless you have the time and inclination to sort it all out with a full install. Gnome 3 is definitely heading in a better direction now, but it's no where near as easy as KDE to run on my 3 hardware setups.

I saw a comment recently on the Mageia blog that Gnome 3 was now getting good enough to make MATE and Cinnamon redundant. I think that's going too far at the moment but it could come to pass over the next couple of years.
Buy a Hoover and prove technology sucks.
