I'm a Steam user and very pleased with it in general.
As George points out, automatic updates and patches are a big advantage of Steam. Direct downloads are a big plus too for me.

The range of games available is huge for Windows, but I imagine it will take some persuading to convince the majority of game developers to offer a Linux compatible version of a previously released title any time soon.
I too wish the Linux version of Steam well, and hopefully, with Linux rise in popularity, the developers will increasingly feel it worthwhile to offer a Linux version when developing a new game.
