Personally, I strongly advise against rooting your phone. It voids any warranties and you could end up with a very nice paperweight.

Do some internet searches on "rooting android phone" or something similar. It may not be illegal, but it strikes me somehow as just plain wrong to root a cellphone. Maybe I'm wrong, but I would never do it.
