Further to my post above, I downloaded PCL Xfce and still the same issue. I have two mobile broadband modems and both return a message "unable to open blah, blah". Go to their forum and there is different advice about install this, edit that as root then jump through 19 more hoops but still none of it works for me. Considering that all Gnome (to my knowledge) and most other Xfce and KDE distros now recognize these modems, I cannot understand why some distros still fail to address the fundamental requirement for most folks of getting connected.
