Even, if this was true, probably it was because of the cummulative reactions, particles striking onto each other increasing their speed exponentially and not in vacuum where there are no other particles to collide or other protons to increase it's net speed.

I saw the news about "Particles faster than light found" on TV first before I found it in the website.
