How were you trying to use Ubuntu on your flash drive? Was it Creating an Ubuntu Live USB from CD?
Your trouble may have been caused by a number of reasons. You may want to take a look at the help/tools section on pendrivelinux

I can highly recommend Puppy Linux and there just happens to be recent review of Puppy linux on Dedoimedo's website
IMO Puppy Linux should provide better results due to its small size and it light use of your computers resources. If you decide To go with Puppy you will want to take a look here
