Ritho: I chose USB HDD from the boot options via F12. My DT still wouldn't boot from the USB so I tried your suggestion of connecting in the back but still no joy!

I cannot verify if the USB stick will boot from another PC as my LT does not have a USB option in the boot menu.

vasa1: I also thought that all USB ports were identical.

Thanks for the input, it just seems instead of 1,2,3 it's more like 1,2,3,4,5,6, ad nauseum!

NB I had Ubuntu 9 installed on my DT in a dual boot setup with XP but I forgot my password. I have since uninstalled v9 and now just get the folowing message if I attempt to boot into Ubuntu:

The following is missing or corrupt, Windows root>\system32\hal.dll

PS I attempted to boot into Ubuntu in the mistaken belief it was going to boot up from my USB stick (in case you were thinking, why am I attempting to run something I had already uninstalled)!!!

The steep learning curve of Linux based OS continues...
