According to Ubuntu's documentation on MountUSB, a USB stick should automount upon insertion. On an older PC I have with Ubuntu 10.04 installed to dual-boot with XP, I inserted a USB stick (FAT32), but it didn't mount at all in Ubuntu.

In the same documentation, it also says "Sometimes devices don't automount, in which case you should try to manually mount it." (Hmmm, without saying for what reasons.). Hey it works for me in this case with manual mounting after issuing these two commands in Terminal.

sudo mkdir /media/usb
sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/usb -o uid=1000,gid=100,utf8,dmask=027,fmask=137
