When messing with the Registry, along with restore points, system images, it's not a bad idea to use ERUNT free registry backup. I've been using it since NT 4 Server. It backs up certain registry hives only. When you restore you don't get a bunch of file changes. The readme included is a bit complex. But the best method of backup with it is to use the included AutoBackup program. Just stick a shortcut to it in your StartUp folder.

For example, I use this target line with it:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\ERUNT\AUTOBACK.EXE" %SystemRoot%\ERDNT\#Date# sysreg curuser otherusers /days:7

which creates a one week revolving backup. The oldest day gets deleted so there's no need to watch it for growing disk space usage. It's self regulating. Plus the restore program is on several of those emergency boot CDs.
