A good way to start learning Linux would be to get started with Puppy Linux. The download is only of 105 MB, and you can write it on to a CD. Its just awesome! Try it, you will love it. It can also be installed on a USB drive, and booted from there, if your computer has the ability to boot from USB. That way, you can also save the settings on the drive itself. But a live CD would be a good way for a start.

Many of the bigger Linux distros have live CDs, which you can try. You can find them from the link J.L. gave.
