Also, it helps to clear out the cache. 'Tools' and then 'clear recent history' .. check the boxes for cache, cookies etc, and then click 'clear now', then give CCleaner a run and let it clear out all the gunk, if you haven't already. If you have tons of toolbars and add-ons installed then it will affect the load speed .. shouldn't take as long as you're experiencing though.

And as mentioned by Anupam, SeaMonkey is now a very viable alternative to Firefox, in terms of looks, extensions and all the rest.
