Windows malware do not affect linux at all because they're very much different down to the core. Unless you got a virus designed for linux or a real nasty one that infects your BIOS, you're safe in Ubuntu.

Your Ubuntu would not be affected, and if you don't open the malware in Vista, yes you are safe.
