Update: I found so far that handbrake indeed has worked the best. However if you want to make a backup copy of a legally owned modern dvd you will find that handbrake as well as windows based dvd rippers can not over come the errors that are intentialy placed on these dvd's.

There are many more options available for windows based dvd rippers, Some work better than others. I find different rippers work with different dvd's. This has been my expeirance.
