Driver updates are either to fix bugs or to add new features. The vast majority are purely optional and seldom make their way to being included in the Microsoft updates. Those that do are usually to fix serious problems and are supposedly thoroughly tested by MS testers as well as the developers.

There are so many devices and drivers for them that the versions included in the Windows kernel are generic versions. Windows will always try to use a device, even if badly, and give the opportunity to find better drivers, rather than refuse to use it without the correct drivers.
