A modern PC monitor, or the display panel on a laptop, is highly configurable and controllable through software. You may have used a program such as Flux for example, which gradually dims the screen and adjusts the colour temperature (the whiteness of the light) as dusk approaches. You may even have used some of the control keys that allow you to flip, mirror or rotate your display.
The always-excellent Nir Sofer, who's the power behind the Nirsoft website, has just launched a new utility called Control My Monitor which lets you adjust and tweak your display. Change the brightness and contrast, for example, to quickly and easily see which settings work for you. And you can change the red, green and blue balances as well, to make the display seem less harsh after sunset.
You can even save and re-load collections of settings.
ControlMyMonitor is free, and is malware-free according to VirusTotal. It's a tiny 0.08 MB download from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/control_my_monitor.html and works just fine in Windows 10. The download link is towards the bottom of the page mentioned.
It's portable and needs no installation. Just download, unzip, and double-click the .exe file.
