The Windows taskbar (that's the thing at the bottom of the screen) is a bit of an issue for many people. While it's handy to be able to add icons for your commonly-used programs to it, there's simply not the capacity for it to be useful. You can't categorise the icons, for example, to make them easier to find. So I tend to end up using the desktop instead, which can be a problem if the currently open program windows are obscuring it.
sTabLauncher is one alternative to the taskbar. It's a program launcher which lets you add icons to a bar. The bar is hidden until you move your mouse over it. And you can create dividers and tabs in order to simplify things and sort everything into any logical order that works for you.
It's especially useful if you're setting up a PC for a non-technical user, as they can pretty much do everything from the launcher bar and not have to look at the remainder of the desktop.
You'll find sTabLauncher at www.stablauncher.com where it's a 1 MB download. It's free, and it's malware-free too, according to VirusTotal and Web of Trust. I tried it with WIndows 10 and it worked perfectly.
