A front-end for award winning MPlayer with extensive features and ease of use.
Pros & Cons:
SMPlayer joins the list of impressive media players that is a front-end for award winning MPLayer, but differentiates itself from the competition, thanks to its extensive features by maintaining its ease of use. Not only does this open source media player encompass major audio and video codecs, it is also highly portable, light, stable, and available in a number of languages.
SMPlayer is cross platform and available on Windows (right from Win95) and Linux. The installation of the media player was a breeze. SMPlayer is free from any adware, and the installer is just 16MB and takes 50MB of hard disk space. After choosing one among the 25 languages available and accepting the terms and conditions, you may choose what components are to be installed and the directory for installation. It was just easy as Next, Next, Next! Though there was a first time delay when it scanned all fonts during playback of a video.
The interface is visually pleasing and quite intuitive with different styles and customizable colorful buttons. It's clean and neatly organized. There is an explorer styled menu at the top providing access to almost all the options and a compact mode that shreds the player from all buttons for minimalistic loving users. A toolbar with icons is available at the top for the most commonly used functions that includes switching between audio channels and subtitles, and below the video display area we've the standard navigation menu. There are useful tooltips not just in the main interface, but even in the preferences menu. It would have been good if the player supported an icon library for supported file formats, a skinnable GUI and Win7 taskbar playback controls.
Caution! SMPlayer is now bundled with OpenCandy. See this information page for details.
