The free Windows utility Autoruns from Sysinternals is familiar to many Gizmo’s readers but a new version 13.0 is just out and its developer calls it a major update. Any major update of this very useful application is worth noting so I am passing the news along. Autoruns is Gizmo's choice for Best Free Startup Manager.
According to developer Mark Russinovich:
This major update to Autoruns, an autostart execution point (ASEP) manager, now has integration with Virustotal.com to show the status of entries with respect to scans by over four dozen antimalware engines. It also includes a revamped scanning architecture that supports dynamic filters, including a free-form text filter, a greatly improved compare feature that highlights not just new items but deleted ones as well, and file saving and loading that preserves all the information of a scan.
The description and download link are on this page. Autoruns is portable and can be run from anywhere convenient. It works on all current Windows versions. There is also a link on the download page that lets you run it directly from Live.Sysinternals.com. The graphic below shows an example of the interface.
Update 9 February, 2015 - A bug fix has been released. Version 13.01 is described here.
Update 21 March, 2015 - Version 13.2 has been released.
