Powerful Free Microsoft Security Tool EMET Now in Version 4.1 Update

EMET (Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit) is a powerful free security tool from Microsoft. EMET hardens your system against various exploit techniques by making programs run in a restricted mode and has been the subject of previous tips. The current version 4.1 has just been updated today to version 4.1 Update.

The Microsoft description is here and the download page is here. The setup MSI file is 8.2 MB. A 1.8 MB PDF user’s guide is also available at this link. According to Microsoft, EMET supports Windows XP Service Pack 3 on up, including Windows 8.1. However, please note the following requirements from Microsoft:

Please remember that EMET 4.1 Update 1 requires .NET Framework 4, and in order to protect Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8 you need to install KB2790907 – a mandatory AppCompat update that has been released on March 12th, 2013 or any other AppCompat update for Windows 8 after that.

This update to EMET is said to protect against the still unpatched Internet Explorer zero-day exploits that were recently reported. Here is the latest Microsoft advisory about those IE problems.

An extensive tutorial on how to use EMET has been written by fellow Gizmo editor Dedoimedo and is at this link. The tutorial is for version 4.0 but I assume it is still applicable.

I installed this program and decided I don't want it. How the heck do I get rid of it? I've searched online and the only sites that have uninstall info are not rated as trustworthy. I don't want to have to read through a dozen articles or anything time consuming. I just want rid of this lousy program. It is messing up my computer and making it unusable. I can't even open up Word 2013!!!! It doesn't show up on either the Windows 7 uninstall in the control panel or in Revo uninstaller. Also, Revo shows me having only 15 programs installed, when I actually have twice that much. Please help me get rid of this crummy program. Thanks.

I am certainly sorry to hear that you are having problems. From what you say I don't know what went wrong with your system. Removing it should be in Contriol Panel. Did you back up before installing EMET? Try posting your problem at the Microsoft EMET forum at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/security/en-US/home?forum=emet. You can also try our forum http://www.techsupportalert.com/freeware-forum/general-computer-support/ I am not familiar with this tool http://www.shouldiremoveit.com/EMET-99230-program.aspx but you can take a look at it.

Excellent article.

I have been running EMET since the release of version 3.0, with it currently installed on various Windows boxes running XP, 7, 8 & 8.1 Update (with no adverse effects to date). A highly-recommended security enhancement.

This article lists some incompatible application mitigations.
You can customize and turn off the ones that affect an application using the EMET gui:

Thanks for pointing out this link.

This is the 3rd version of EMET I have downloaded and I still have not been able to install it. I receive Error Code 2738 and the part-install rewinds.

I am using Windows 7 Home Edition with SP1 and have the requisite .NET fully up to date.

Why will it not install?

EMET can certainly cause conflicts with other programs. Do you have anti-malware programs that might be conflicting? Have you checked out the information in http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/windows-emet-v4.html or http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/jj653751 or http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2458544 If you continue to have problems, try posting the details at the forum http://www.techsupportalert.com/freeware-forum/general-computer-support/ or you could try Wilder's Security Forum http://www.wilderssecurity.com/

I am using Win7 Ultimate on my desktop and Win 7 Home Prem on my laptop. I installed EMET 4.1 Update 1 on each machine. After installation, the "Save As" file save would not respond ("Save As not responding)in any program that has that function (excel, word, graphics files, etc). I uninstalled EMET on each machine, and the Save As works fine.

It's worth reading "The Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit" at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2458544 before installing EMET.

ALERT!!

I'm running Win8.1 upgrade.

EMET made it impossible to launch Adobe Acrobat or Reader.

Both opened & then closed within a second.

I had to restore my system to before EMET install to resolve.

Thanks for the link to Dedoimedo's peice, that's a good read.

I came across EMET quite a while back, it really is very much a set-and-forget thing. I'm not much qualified to judge how it works but given that it has no noticeable effect on performance (longer boot time on my old desktop but that's all) and only the occasional program has problems with it, it does seem well worth having.
