Microsoft has just released Windows 8.1 to the public. If you have an existing licensed copy of Windows 8, you can get a free upgrade to 8.1 at the Windows Store. If you don't already have Windows 8 and want to try out the latest version of Windows, there is now a free trial version of 8.1, good for 90 days.

The download is available at this Microsoft page. It is available in both 32- and 64-bit versions but only the Enterprise edition is being offered. It is a large download of several GB and may take quite a while. A Microsoft account is required for the download. This trial version should not be installed on your main working system. Either use a virtual machine or a secondary system that you use just for trials. Upon installation, Windows will prompt you to activate. A product key is not required for this software but you must complete activation before October 31, 2014. In other words, you have just over a year.
