Thanks guys and gals for the your gracious acceptance of the fact that we will simply have to run some ads or shut the site down. I don't feel good about it but it is certainly the lessor of two evils. Your generous support makes it just a little bit easier for me to accept.
Well the ads have now started. They will only be shown to anonymous users - if you login they will immediately disappear and if you are using an ad blocker plugin in your browser you won't see the ads anyway.
We will be showing the absolute minimum number of ads to keep the site going. Gizmo's is a non commercial community website and will remain that way while I'm still around and I intend to be around for a very long time.
I've personally selected the ads that will be displayed to ensure they are pretty well non competitive with our freeware suggestions. I've also stuck with major companies with good reputations.
I'm not going to ask you to support our sponsors; that would be gratuitous. Instead I suggest you buy a Gizmo hat or t-shirt or maybe make a small donation. Every thing you buy or donate means fewer ads and that is in everybody's interest.

I hate to say this but I’ve failed. When we first started our community website “Gizmos’ Freeware” two years ago I made a commitment to myself not to run ads on the site. Instead I planned to survive on donations and merchandise sales. Well it hasn’t worked; we are going to have to run a limited number of ads. Either that or shut the site down.
I feel really bad about this but in many ways it is a consequence of the site’s success. Running a site as popular as Gizmo’s Freeware requires considerable resources. It needs hefty server hardware, specially written software, heavy weight backend support and more. This doesn’t come cheap.
I thank all the people who donated and bought caps and t-shirts. Your generosity allowed the site to survive without ads for two years. We wouldn’t be where we are without your kind assistance; a heart-felt thanks to you all.
The good news is that we will be running few ads – just enough to cover our costs. Furthermore the ads will be carefully chosen to avoid a conflict of interest. So for example, you will see virtually no ads for commercial software that competes with the freeware we recommend.
The positive side is the income will allow us to improve the site to better serve your needs. We should also be able to upgrade our server hardware so that the site runs faster when you visit. Most important of all, we won’t have to shut the site down. That would be a loss to everyone.
One thing is for sure. Despite the ads, Gizmo’s Freeware will remain the independent community site it has always been.
