If you need an Office suite (word processor, spreadsheet, presentation graphics) for your PC but you don't want to fork out hundreds of dollars/pounds/whatever for Microsoft Office, then there's a handful of well-known free alternatives. Probably the best-known is Open Office, but in recent years it's become big and slow.
So here's another option. Softmaker Office 2010 isn't free (it costs around $70), but the previous 2008 version is. You can download it from www.loadandhelp.de/home-en.html. It's available in Windows and Linux versions, and there's also a collection of 80 top-quality fonts too, if you want to spruce up your documents.
The Windows download runs on XP and above, and is a 58 MB file.
In the true spirit of Christmas, Softmaker isn't just giving you free software. It'll also donate 0.1 Euros (that's around 10 US cents) to charity for every download. Full details are on their web site.
My thanks to reader Theo Tang for telling me about this one. Having tried the software, I have to agree that it does seem to be a perfectly capable Office suite. And for free, it's a real bargain.
