Our Review:

I had a fairly pleasant experience with Microsoft's virutal desktop manager called Desktops, a small tool produced by Windows Sysinternals that allows you to extend the screen up to four virtual desktops.

Unlike other virtual desktop managers that implement their desktops by showing the windows that are active on a desktop and hiding the rest, Desktops uses a Windows desktop object for each desktop.

With Desktops, application windows are bound to a desktop object when they are created, so Windows maintains the connection between windows and desktops, and knows which ones to show when you switch a desktop. In other words, Desktops makes use of the built-in features of Windows and this makes the program very small and lightweight. The download file is only 61 KB and the unzipped exe file is only 115 KB.

The program adds a tray icon to the taskbar. You can switch between virtual desktops either by clicking on the tray icon and selecting one, or by using a hotkey.

Although lacking in some of the features found in most of the other applications, it makes up by its small size and simplicity. If you're looking for just the basics in a virtual desktop manager, Desktops is a good choice.
