I Still Rate This Excellent Free Youtube Downloader

A year ago I mentioned a great free program for downloading content from Youtube.  Since I wrote about it, there's been a handful of new versions and lots of additional features added, so I thought I'd mention it again.

The program in question is Freemake Video Downloader, which you can find at http://www.freemake.com/free_video_downloader/.  The download, which runs on all recent versions of Windows, is less than 2 MB, though it'll download another 11 MB during setup.

Once you've installed the program, the easiest option is to click the button and turn on one-click downloading.  Specify where you want the downloaded files to be stored, whether you want to optimize for speed or quality, and how you want the downloads to work.  A full video download?  Or just extract the audio to an MP3 file?

Once you're done, fire up Youtube in your browser, select a video, then flip to FVD and click the Paste URL button.  That's all there is to it.  In just a few seconds your video or audio file will be on your computer, ready to watch or listen to offline.

Freemake Video Downloader is free of viruses, according to VirusTotal.  However, please be aware that the program uses the Open Candy advertising system, which is classed as malware by the NOD antivirus scanner.  Open Candy is not malicious, but it does attempt to persuade you to install other programs and features (such as internet toolbars) that you may not want.  Pay careful attention during the installation phase, and ensure that you untick any boxes which mention features that you don't want.  You'll be perfectly safe, and have a great free program as well.

It was awesome, it was great until a few weeks ago it stopped working. No updates since December, no tech support, which makes it useless due to the new algorithms used by all major sites.

Attempted to download and run Freemake Video Downloader on Feb. 14, 2020. One can no longer download files in HD and/or MP3 (AAC only) formats for free. I kept getting a popup to 'upgrade to a paid version' for the ability to use those features.. Bummer!!!

The download is being quarantined by Malwarebytes:

Any Ideas?

Sorry Midnight, but was this meant for my inquiry? If so should how would I buy pass MWB to download the program(s)?

Gibbs, the original article is here:

You will notice it recommends using the off-line installer. (I don't know why it was'nt mentioned here). That's what I did. As an extra precaution, I also disconnected from the internet when I ran the installer. As a result, I never saw any offers from OpenCandy. Of course, you must also pay attention during the install and make sure you read everything and opt out of any extras.

If the off-line installer is still quarantined my MBAM, you could restore it from the quarantine like MC advised.

Sorry but we are unable to provide support for commercial programs. Since PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) are not classified as malware, presumably Malwarebytes contains an option to override the quarantine. In any case, the place to request advice about this product is from their customer support. MC - Site Manager.

Thanks for the reply MidnightCowboy. I think I will just respect MWB's decision and leave this one alone. After all that is why I paid for their protection I guess I should respect it.

Merry Christmas to those that celebrate it and Happy New Year to all.

You can try the Firefox add-on "1-Click Video Downloader"...works flawlessly for me on my Windows 8 x64 machine.

Thanks, for the info I have downloaded the Add On and will give it a shot the next time I wish to download a video.

Just so everyone's aware, this program can download from other select sites. This is the only free program I know of that can still download off of Hulu.

I use PWN You tube http://deturl.com/

Has the added benefit of being able to have a favourite / bookmark.
See a youtube video you like, select the favourite / bookmark.
Then presented with numerous options of different quality video files to download.

Thank you! Freemake Video Downloader is great. I've been looking for something like this for months. Thanks, Rob S, for posting your recommendation again.

To JackP who is looking for a program to capture streaming video: This program is NOT free but it is great, imho. [removed]

{Moderator's note: Please do not post about commercial software. Not allowed. The site is about freeware, please respect that}

I have read with interest the postings from everyone - all very helpful and informative.
I had been looking for a while for an easy and safe download program to use [especially for You Tube] but without success, but this posting reignited my interest again.
I found this FREE and very comprehensive and easy to use program from Ashampoo called 'Ashampoo Clip Finder HD'.
I have used a number of programs from them over many years and have never been disappointed with any them.
Hopefully other members may also find this neat little program of interest.

I'm looking for a (free) video downloader that could download streaming video from webinars I attend on the web. Is there such a thing?
The format can vary from: flv, mp4, swf, or others.

Thanks for any input.

Thanks for your reply.
Here's the kind of webinar I'm trying to download (to watch offline.)
[edited out]

I didn't find any tools that can download those.

Sorry, I had to edit out the link, as, first, it has yellow WOT rating, and we do not allow sites with bad WOT ratings, as per site policy. Also, the site has commercial content.. not suitable here. Well, you can give a try to VSO Downloader, or Real Downloader, and see if they are successful.

QUESTION PLEASE Before I download and install Freemake Video Downloader, please tell me if Java is needed for it to run. I have uninstalled Java on all of my computers.

Thank you.

No, Java is not needed :).

For me too, Freemake is the go to downloader. My only complaints are that it takes a bit to begin downloading once a Video URL is provided and it very infrequently fails to detect the video.

Another great one is VSO Downloader which relies on WinPcap and will capture all streams (including RTMP with their paid Ultimate version) and will either automatically download or wait for your selection. It includes: Localizations, accelerator, retry, file naming, filters, ports monitoring, conversion, audio compression, ad blocker, etc. It has worked for me in those instances where Freeemake failed.

Check out Free Studio suite

Free Studio is an all-in-one package bundling all free multimedia applications developed by DVDVideoSoft. Free Studio Manager has 8 sections for easy access to any application: YouTube programs; MP3 and Audio; CD, DVD and BD; DVD and Video; Photo and Images; Mobiles; Apple Devices; and 3D programs.

With this free software you can easily:
- convert video and audio files between different formats as well as iPod, PSP, iPhone, BlackBerry and all other popular mobile phones and devices;
- burn and rip DVDs and audio CDs;
- upload and download YouTube videos and music to your computer, iPod, PSP, iPhone or BlackBerry;
- perform basic editing of audio and video files;
- record videos and make snapshots;
- create 3D videos and images.

Free Studio does not contain spyware or adware. It's absolutely free and completely safe to install and run.

Actually, I have the complete Freemake suite installed on my machine.
Can't say I use all the programs, but still nice to have - just in case

I agree that Freemake Video Downloader works great. My input here mainly relates to avoiding Open Candy - here's what I did:

1. Download FVD.

2. Turn off your computer's wifi.

3. If you are connected by ethernet cable, disconnect the cable.

4. Double-click on the FVD installer to install the program.

I never saw anything to do with offers from Open Candy, nor have I found any evidence of it on my system. I may be wrong, but this is how to avoid Open Candy.

Please note too that this method will not work in all cases. For example, it will not work if a program's installer needs to access the internet to download more files. If this is the case, then you will need to run the installer from a command line with the /nocandy switch - something which I confess still eludes my n00b understanding :-(.

I'm using EagleGet as my Youtube Downloader. It works perfectly on my Chrome and Firefox.

Awesome Video Downloader! I use this one. Never a problem.
Their converter works Great too!

I have used both of them for about a year. They are the best I have found so far.
