Make Chrome Display the Full URL in the Address Bar

Google Chrome browser

Google has tried off and on for years to hide full URL’s in Chrome’s address bar. Here’s how to see the full URL in the current version of Google Chrome.

In the latest version of Google Chrome, Google hid the ‘https://’ and ‘www’ part of a URL. Here are the steps to make Chrome display the whole URL in the address bar:

  • Open Chrome
  • Type or paste ‘Chrome://flags’ in the address bar
  • In the Chrome://flags search box, type or paste ‘Context menu show full URLs’
  • From the drop down menu next to the Context menu show full URLs entry, choose ‘Enabled’
  • Choose ‘Relaunch’ to restart Chrome
  • When Chrome opens, right click in the address bar and select ‘Always show full URLs’

This works in Brave browser as well. Microsoft Edge currently displays the whole URL.

Android Policereport Google is adding new feature flags in the Dev and Canary builds of Chrome that hide everything except the domain name. All the pages in a domain you visit will have only the domain name.
If you visit our Best Free Android Apps category, the URL looks like this:
https://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-android-apps.htm
When Google implements the changes to display only domain names, the URL for the Best Free Android Apps category will look like this:
https://www.techsupportalert.com/

Google doesn’t always implement experimental features, but in this case, it looks like they are going to go ahead with it. They say the option to right click the address bar to always show full URL’s will be retained.

Hi,

Through this "flag stuff", is it possible to make other chrome-based browsers show the GOOD OLD FULL STATUS BAR as seen in the traditionally interfaced ones, like the good old Opera?

Thanks.

I don't know. Maybe someone here has an idea?

Thank you for this.
Working great on both Chrome and Brave browsers for me. I suspect where people are running into issue may be they are copy-pasting the entire...
‘Chrome://flags’ and/or ‘Context menu show full URLs’
...using the apostrophes ( ' ) still attached. They simply need to leave them out and they should be successful.

You're welcome. It could be people are copying with quotes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Success at last! Thanks for your help.

That's excellent news. :)

I'm on a Lenovo desktop, with the latest Chrome build, After several tries of the flags entry, it finally showed a huge list (over 80 entries) of available Experiments. So I searched the list and found the Context Menu entry, enabled it (options were default, enabled, or disabled), and closed and reopened my browser. But the full URLs are still not showing. Will continue to try. Temped to click on "reset all" but many show enabled or default, and I'm not sure of the consequences of a reset.

I use the portable version of Chrome. I have the latest 64 bit version. I have followed the instructions. I chose "enabled" and then relaunch. However no full URL's are displayed. Only the site names.

Do you have any extensions installed? They might interfere. There are none installed in the versions I use to test.

I just tested this using portable Chrome I downloaded a few minutes ago. It's version Version 83.0.4103.106 (Official Build) (32-bit) downloaded from Portable Apps, not the 64 bit version. I pasted the URL for this article into the address bar. The https:// and the www are showing. I'm attaching a screen shot. I did try this in an older version of portable Chrome and it didn't work. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I like the tip, but searching (in Chrome://flags) for "context menu show full URLs" doesn't bring up a menu. Haven't been successful in following your advice.

Are you running a portable version? Or is the current version installed? This is the version I have:
Version 83.0.4103.106 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Here's a screen shot of the context menu in the chrome flags:

Worked for me on CHROME but not BRAVE. Could not find 'Context menu show full URLs'

I don't know why it's not working in Brave for you.
This is the version of Brave I'm using: Version 1.10.90 Chromium: 83.0.4103.97 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Here's a screen shot of the context menu in chrome flags:
