This list of Best Free Software for Mac OS now includes 281 applications in various categories.

With the advent of "iDevices", Mac OS has arguably become one of the fastest growing user bases in the last decade. Not only for graphic design and audio/video editors anymore, Mac OS, with its simplistic design, has caught the appeal of many more common users who want a system that just works.

One of the largest shortfallings, however, is that enhanced functionality comes at a cost. Many software solutions for Mac OS are paid options that allow certain functionalities. The goal of this group is to break down that barrier and provide a large database of free software for Mac OS to enhance your Mac experience.

Ranging from comic book readers to programming editors, chess to media centers, our team has taken the time to review and recommend the best free software for Mac OS.

Best Free Collision Avoidance Game for Mac OS

  • Armagetron Advanced

"A Tron clone in 3D. This has been the tagline of Armagetron, since, well, a very long time, and is probably the shortest and most accurate description possible. Tron was an arcade game based on the movie of the same name, release by Disney in 1982. The original game consisted of 4 sub-games, the only one of concern is the 'Light Cycles' one, in which the player uses a left/right joystick to control a 'Light Cycle' which leaves a wall behind it wherever the cycle it goes, turning only at 90 degree angles. The player must then get the AI to crash into their wall while avoiding hitting the AI's own wall themselves. Those were the humble beginnings of Armagetron Advanced's game play, which has now blossomed into 16 player mayhem, with highly advanced AI, network game play, and of course all in a 3D environment."

"Nuncabola ... A cross platform rolling ball arcade game similar to the wooden box type puzzles where you must maneuver a ball along a maze by tilting the playing field itself! As avid readers of (the Neverball) forum may know, the lockstep graphics never worked for Nuncabola's developer. That's why (he) was disappointed to see Neverball 1.5 released with the "very apparent and quite disturbing" judder left unfixed. This, among other reasons, motivated (him) to finally start (his) own, personal version of Neverball. The result is a Java application he calls Nuncabola, and he's sharing it here with anyone who is interested. In order to enable productive work, he decided to redesign the entire code structure. Internally, this is a complete rewrite. Externally, Nuncabola is still rather faithful to Neverball in terms of design and features. However, a number of changes have already been made, and more may be introduced as development continues. "

Pingus was started at the end of 1998 with the simple goal to create a Free (as in freedom, not as in free beer) Lemmings® clone. The Free means you get the sources and are allowed and encouraged to change and distribute them. You basically get everything that I used to create this game. In the years it has grown than quite a bit over the original goal and become something more than just a clone, we have original artwork, a built-in level editor, new actions, multiplayer and a few other features."

"If you don't know about Lemmings®, here comes a short introduction. It is a puzzle game developed in 1991 by DMA Design. The player takes command in the game of a bunch of small animals and has to guide them through levels. Since the animals walk on their own, the player can only influence them by giving them commands, like build a bridge, dig a hole or redirect all animals in the other direction. The goal of each level is to reach the exit, for this multiple combination of commands are necessary. The game is presented in a 2D side view. While Pingus is based on the idea of Lemmings®, it however doesn't try to be an exact clone, it has included a few ideas of its own, like the worldmap or secret levels, which might be familiar from games the Super Mario World and other Nintendo games. It has also a few new actions, like the jumper which weren't presented in the original game."

  • Lines

"Lines is an addictive one-player cross platform board game written in Java. Lines game. Place balls of the same color in line to get score. The game starts with a 9 by 9 board with three balls chosen out of seven different colours. The player can move one ball per turn, and the player may only move a ball to a particular place if there is a path (linked set of vertical and horizontal empty cells) between the current position of the ball and the desired destination. The goal is to remove balls by forming lines (horizontal, vertical or diagonal) of at least five balls of the same colour. If the player does form such lines of at least five balls of the same colour, the balls in those lines disappear, and he gains one turn, i.e. he can move another ball. If not, three new balls are added, and the game continues until the board is full. This video game was developed in Russia in 1993. As with all Sokoban type games you must find a clear path to the spaces you need to fill - without blocking yourself - so it takes some planning ... For more information:"

Best Free Ball Redirection Puzzle Game for Mac OS

  • BallPlay Genius

"Welcome to BallPlay Genius. A very easy to understand, yet challenging. The object is easy. Some balls roll over the screen and you can change their course by setting up plates or walls, or by removing plates. The concept of the game is pretty easy.... The balls go back and forth. They roll, as soon as they hit the wall, they'll turn 180 degrees and go back until they hit a wall. Now that's no fun now, is it? Therefore you can place plates in the puzzle. They change the direction of the balls. The number of plates you can put into a puzzle is limited, so check your limits before you start puzzle it all out. You can also remove plates by selecting the empty tool in the tool menu. Some puzzles allow placing walls, but that's a rarity. Now you can do something with the balls. What you got to do depends on the task the puzzle gives you. When you get your task in the puzzle done without getting too many balls destroyed you win the puzzle. The game is great due to it's simplicity. Anyone can understand the rules, yet the game DOES offer a challenge. The game also features a puzzle editor so come up with whatever creativity you have in mind. Features: Challenging puzzles, but still easy to understand. A puzzle editor so that more puzzles can be created and swapped. A random order feature so no problem if a puzzle doesn't get solved. A tracker that tracks which puzzles you've done and not done. You can use multiple "accounts" for that (with password if you wish) so all players on your computer have their personal data."

Best Free Choose Your Own Adventure Story for Mac OS

  • Java Fabled Lands (JaFL)

"Java Fabled Lands (JaFL) ... (formerly known as FLApp) ... Java Fabled Lands is an adaptation of the Fabled Lands gamebook series: travel through a fantastic world, amassing skill, wealth, and fame, while avoiding sudden death. Presents the complete text to preserve the spirit of the original Choose Your Own Adventure type books of the same name. (Do you remember Fighting Fantasy? No? What about Choose Your Own Adventure? A few heads are nodding.) The basic concept is an interactive story, written in the second person, cut up into short numbered sections; at the end of each section you're given a choice as to which section comes next, based on your 'action' within the narrative. A gamebook adds some RPG-ish rules to the mix. Essentially it's a solo role-playing game with a lot of reading. This project is an adaptation of the six published books for the computer. Note the word 'adaptation': I've tried to stay as close as possible to the original text, handling all the rules and leaving the player free to read and enjoy without the (sometimes tedious) record-keeping. The player is faced with something very much like a web-page, and other windows displaying a map and the character's abilities. Requires Java 6. "

There is an AI player to play against and try to beat, and a learning mode where you can learn how to play blackjack perfectly, and make money. Apart from the top row and leftmost column which are entirely black, the grid is divided into "entries"—lines of white cells—by the black cells. The black cells contain a diagonal slash from upper-left to lower-right and a number in one or both halves, such that each horizontal entry has a number in the black half-cell to its immediate left and each vertical entry has a number in the black half-cell immediately above it. These numbers, borrowing crossword terminology, are commonly called "clues". The objective of the puzzle is to insert a digit from 1 to 9 inclusive into each white cell such that the sum of the numbers in each entry matches the clue associated with it and that no digit is duplicated in any entry. It is that lack of duplication that makes creating Kakuro puzzles with unique solutions possible, and which means solving a Kakuro puzzle involves investigating combinations more, compared to Sudoku in which the focus is on permutations. There is an unwritten rule for making Kakuro puzzles that each clue must have at least two numbers that add up to it, since including only one number is mathematically trivial when solving Kakuro puzzles."

Best Free Sudoku Puzzle, Generator and Solver for Mac OS

  • Dancing Sudoku

"Dancing Sudoku is a cross platform Java based tool that can solve or generate special Sudoku puzzles — including 4X4 grid and 16X16 grid Sudoku puzzles — in addition to the regular 9X9 grid puzzles!

Introduction: Dancing Sudoku is a tool that can solve or generate Sudoku puzzles. You might wonder why there is another of those tools needed since there are already many of them available. This project was started as a kind of academic exercise. On a forum I found the remark that Donald Knuth's algorithm for solving the Exact Cover Problem can be applied to the Sudoku problem. Donald Knuth calls his algorithm 'Dancing Links', and that is where the name 'Dancing Sudoku' comes from. By transforming the Sudoku problem into an Exact Coverage problem, Sudoku puzzles can be solved in a very fast and efficient way. There is also no distinction anymore between easy and hard to solve puzzles. The algorithm treats every puzzle as a recursive search tree.

Installation: For running the application you will need a Java Runtime Environment installed on your computer. Now, follow the next steps: • Download from here. • Extract the content to your local filesystem. • Go to the ..\DancingSudoku\bin folder. • Double click on the DancingSudoku.jar file - That is all. Editor's top Sudoku recommendation because it makes these super easy 4 by 4 Sudoku grids, as well as impossible 16 by 16 grids, in addition to the common 9 by 9 kind."

(And SeaMonkey's Composer pane is an up-to-date 'Bug-Fix' version of "NVu" or "Kompozer": and is in my "Top 3" WYSIWYG HTML Design Tool list. Bonus.)

  • Opera

"It might be the most feature rich browser ever. Its eye candy interface combined with speed, security and lightness gives us a rich browsing experience.

If Opera Turbo was the main highlight in its earlier version, release of version 11 provides further surprises. A faster javascript engine with improved HTML 5 support, CSS3 rendering, and a one-third reduction in disk burden with respect to the last version (despite the new features) makes us WOW." (Review)

  • Google ChromeGoogle Chrome

"Based on the open source WebKit engine and Google's V8 Javascipt engine, Google Chrome has been one of the fastest browsers available across multiple benchmarks. It's pleasant, fast, standards compliant and versatile. Google's fastest browser tuned itself from a fast, lightweight browsing alternative to a sad browser with no competitive features. (NOTE: Google no longer supports Netscape Plugins! No JAVA Support ... MANY 'JAVA Based Games' web sites are recommending you install any browser EXCEPT Chrome! This Editor uses sites that still use JAVA as a part of their web design: and no longer recommends Google Chrome to anybody.)" (Review)

  • Apple Safari

"Apple's new Safari, along with the release of the God phone I-Phone 4, are certainly good news to browser fans. Not much has changed in version 5 except for some neat features. With a slight improvement in performance and standards support, Safari is still the best browser for MAC. Safari STILL supports Plugins (AND JAVA Also!) ... Chrome no longer does ... so I switched back to Safari." (Review)

Best Free Webpage Photo Representation software for Mac OS

  • SiteCapture

"SiteCapture is a software application for Mac OS X that creates image representations of web pages. With the click of one button SiteCapture loads a set of web pages and creates images in the format you want. The pages are rendered using WebKit, the browser engine used by Safari. What for? Fill your website portfolio page with screenshots, effortlessly. And because you can create them with one click, it's very easy to keep such a page updated with the latest screenshots. What pages? Choose a Safari bookmark folder and SiteCapture will process each single bookmark contained in it. Or manage your own list of web pages within SiteCapture. Or synchronise the web addresses with a server. What size? Choose which size the virtual browser window should be and specify a thumbnail size — you can either save only the thumbnails or keep the original sized images too. The supported image formats are JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF or BMP. What then? Use Automator to streamline your workflow: Append a date to the image file names or upload them to your web server or do whatever you want."

  • Xee 2.2

" Xee³ was created as an almost complete rewrite from scratch of the older Xee 2.2. If you for some reason prefer Xee 2.2, or if you use an older computer which can not handle Xee³, the old version is still available for free on the Google Code download page. Note that this should not be used as a demo version of Xee³. Xee³ contains many large changes from Xee 2.2, and they can not be directly compared. Also note that development has ended on the 2.x branch of Xee, so no new features will be added, nor will bugs be fixed. However, the source code is available, if you want to make changes yourself. Xee 2.2 should run on both Intel and PowerPC machines, on Mac OS X versions as far back as 10.4. The last free version of Xee - 2.2 - is still freely available, and DOES seem to still work on Mac OS X 10.9.5 ... so, I put it back. "

  • PhotoScale

"PhotoScale is a picture resizing and format changing tool. It can scale all the images inside a directory to a defined resolution quite quickly. It's pretty useful for users of social networking and photo sharing sites. It's an ideal tool when you have to upload to the web huge amounts of pictures. Most social networking sites use quite low image resolutions and uploading 3072x2304 (7 megapixels, approximately 4.5 megabytes) pictures is both a waste of time and bandwidth. There aren't many system requirements actually, you just need to have the latest version of java runtime edition installed on your system to run the program."

SeaMonkey's Composer pane is an up-to-date 'Bug-Fix' version of "NVu" or "Kompozer": and is one of the most intuitive WYSIWYG HTML design tools I know of. There is a Site Manager that helps make publishing updated or new pages to your site as easy as saving files locally.

  • Netbeans

"Experienced users might prefer Netbeans. It started life as a Java Editor but with recent releases has developed into a powerful text editor for web scripting. At first glance, Netbeans is a little intimidating. Most of the menu items can be ignored by ordinary mortals. Using it as an HTML/PHP editor is akin to using a steam hammer to crack a peanut. Nevertheless the code completion, code colouring and the professional look and feel make it an excellent choice." (Review)

  • NFOViewer

"NFOViewer is a MacOSX application for viewing documents containing ASCII art ("nfo", "asc" or "diz" documents)."

Best Free Security and Privacy for Mac OS

Best Free Anonymous Surfing Service for Mac OS

  • TOR

"Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security. Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location. (TOR also has available a preconfigured Tor Browser set to use the TOR Proxy by default.)"

  • Hotspot Shield

"A free VPN client based on OpenVPN. Unlike other anonymous surfing options, such as JonDo, Hotspot Shield encrypts all of your Internet activities and not just web browsing. This is ideal for people who want to anonymise other applications without the need to 'proxify' them, which can be a complicated and tedious task." (Review)

  • JonDo

"A VPN client written in Java that routes data across the JonDo network. It has an attractive and user-friendly GUI, and displays lots of visual information about your connection to the JonDo network. The free service offers 30-50 kbps speeds and unlimited bandwidth." (Review)

Best Free Antivirus for Mac OS

  • Avast! Free AntivirusAvast! Free Antivirus

"Avast has steadily been improving its detection rates over the past few years and now ranks with the some of the best. It has the most features of all the free antivirus with full real-time capabilities including web, e-mail, IM, P2P and network shields, boot-time scanning, and a behavioural blocker.

The new version brings even more features including an internet site ratings plugin, script malware protection and a limited (non-configurable) sandboxing feature. Although the sandbox is a very useful semi-automated security feature, the default settings involves a pop up to ask whether a software should be sandboxed for not. Lastly Avast is relatively light on resources." (Review)

  • ClamXav

"A free virus scanner for Mac OS X, using the very popular ClamAV open source antivirus engine as a back end and has the ability to detect both Windows and Mac threats.

Best Free Internet Safety Check for Mac OS

  • WOT (Web of Trust)WOT (Web of Trust)

"WOT (Web of Trust) from WOT Services is the Editor's Choice because it leads in many areas: compatibility and integration with seamless operation; flexible options; searching; warning and blocking; and user input. It only loses in areas that it doesn't compete in: meta-rating (combining the results from several raters as in Link Extend) and scanning.

WOT is the best implemented and the best documented rater - you can even view the source code, but it is also the most heavily criticized." (Review)

Best Free Password Manager for Mac OS

  • LastPass

"LastPass is a combination of both web service and software. With the web service you can access your data anywhere, while the software which runs on your computer allows you to view your data even when you're not connected to the Internet. When you install the software, the plugins or extensions for supported browsers are automatically installed.

It is as safe as it can possibly get and uses the same encryption algorithm that the US Government uses for top secret data. The key to decrypt the data is only known to you as all encryption/decryption occurs on your computer, and the entire site is encrypted and verified by Comodo." (Review)

There IS NO Macintosh Binary for this APP! You expect my typical reader to Download the Source package/Check the Hashes to see it hasn't been tampered with/Compile this to MAKE a binary copy/Start the compiled App in the Terminal - all for a Command Line program with NO GUI?

I, myself, have never compiled a package to MAKE a Program: and I do NOT expect my readers to do things I cannot. And I do not use command line programs: you must remember a whole bunch of complicated command line sequences and be a good touch typist as well. Programs I will use have Menus and can be controlled with a pointing device: like a mouse, or trackpad, or trackball. And my readers expect the same.

Please, in the future do not post any program as a suggestion for this list for which you must compile your own binary! And, I would highly dissuade you from suggesting anymore command line programs: Because I do not intend to post them unless they really fulfill a critical function that no other program (With a GUI) can match. Thank you for all the useful suggestions .... but a few of your suggestions are old programs that no longer even launch on Mac OS 10.7 or later, or won't work properly on any recent Mac OS.

Take "Juice", from 2005, for example: it won't even launch!

Or your suggestion for "Burn" - which quits in the middle of a Burn - and is no longer supported by the developer: I removed that from this list 2 weeks ago! (and commented on its removal - so no one would suggest it again - in the editor's forum: in a thread with the words Mac and Gory in the title ... please read it?)

And thank you for all the suggested games. But I don't happen to have a spare year handy in which to check to see if they are still working on Mac OS 10.9 ... nor to even post the 100 games in the "Merry Christmas" list I made (in the "Recent Finds" section in the editors forum) - that I know still work because I pre-tested them out FOR Christmas! This is my first time online this week ... my real life has become way too busy to allow me any time online to post new things ANYWHERE.

Pile 'em On!!! But I will not be posting new stuff until I've checked the whole existing list and removed all the posted things that don't work any longer (like Burn). And that's not going to be soon if I only get 3 hours online a week - only by getting up super early at 4 AM some day ....

After I check the existing things on the list to see if they still work, and weed out the remaining non-functional items, then - and only then - will I start weeding out any non-functioning suggestions and adding them to the list. I seem to be the only editor here with a Macintosh - and half of my friends own Macs too - so it falls on me to see if they still work before they are posted. It is a big responsibility ... and weeks of continuous non-stop working just to test the remaining ones ... and I have less time for the internet now than ever before (I'm not liking the fact I can't be here as much as I wish to be ... ).

My hour is up .... see you next week.

Sorry about that. I got those from Best of Mac lists from the net.

I have 30 more to check/post and then I am done ;)

Yes, those suggestions ... and then I have Another List to dig through (leave that one to me, Please)!

After I get done posting those 100 Games I stored away for later in "Recent Finds", that is ....

And I'll be posting new things for a long time to come ....

No, it is my bad for failing to list Burn BY NAME in my editing list ... I'm just getting done spanking myself over it in the editors forum. Mea Culpa!!!

Caddy - the HTTP/2 web server:

Phocus - free image processing software:

Apparently this is a 'Yes, BUT ....' program with hidden catches to it ... I'll list it here: BUT with a few caveats.

First thing upon launch: "Phocus wants to access my contacts.". Well. I cannot think of a legitimate purpose that a big camera company (that only has very wealthy clients) would want the name/address/number/department/ETC of everyone I know (presumably all of their wealthy clients never think twice and freely share this information?) - but I can think of several purposes they might use this information for that I might be unhappy about at a later time.

So, NO: they do not get permission from the system to access my contacts - denied!

Then this sneaky program tries to "call home" anyway: behind your back! Thank goodness for "Little Snitch" (I have purchased) warning me about bad activities tried over my internet connection!

Now, there are legitimate reasons a program might want to call home: to check for a newer version of itself is the common usage. But a good developer always warns you, with a prompt or two ... something to the effect of "AnyAPP would like to check for updates. (You must be connected to the internet to continue.)" {CANCEL} { OK } before it snatches at your internet connection, and sometimes the part in parenthesis is in a separate notifier box with {CONTINUE} instead of { OK }.

Having already tried to grab up all my contacts personal information: NOW Phocus will try to transmit information through my internet connection without me noticing it - until it is too late. What say you 'Little Snitch'? DENIED!!!!! Do NOT let Phocus call home, I said.

Now Phocus insists I register it - with my Hasselblad camera serial number, and a whole long user profile - 'for support purposes' (marketing support ... I'll bet): good thing there is a {LATER} Button: or I'd have quit checking this software out and given a failing grade to it right then. It will nag you regularly to register it, you bet!

Finally I get to the Welcome dialog. I checked the program out. It is "Adobe Photoshop" complicated in there: just the way I like it. Seems like well written code - just that it acts snoopy without permission. IF you trust Hasselblad will not snoop through your computer for data: go ahead and install this "Free Download" program.

Is there any way I can batch remove 3249 unwanted emails from my ipad. I have mail "ruled" to avoid spam on my syncd mac but the syncing seeme to occur prior to the sorting.

I think so ... but I do not use an iPad or Apple "Mail", myself. Here is how I would theoretically proceed: 1. Get them all in a group. Arrange their sorting order so as to get as many spam messages in a contiguous block as is possible - hopefully they are all marked as junk and you can sort by junk status. You can arrange to sort them by clicking on the tops of the various columns (sender email address/junk status/date/subject/ ... and so on) - which will regroup them by sender or subject ... or whatever. 2. Bulk delete shortcuts On my Mac Desktop I can "Select" a large contiguous block of files in the finder - or messages in my email client (or in quite a few other Mac programs) in one of two ways: Drag Select ... where you hold the left mouse button down while drawing a rectangle that encloses JUST the items you want ... OR Select the first message of the block you want deleted - then HOLD DOWN the Shift Key and click on the last message of the block you want deleted: that selects all messages between the first and last ones. Then click Delete. Go get the iPad Manual: and check page 55 Please. "Delete, move, or mark multiple messages. While viewing a list of messages, tap Edit. Select some messages, then choose an action. If you make a mistake, shake iPad immediately to undo."
Sadly, Xee is not freeware anymore. :-(
