Winaero

Use this program to tweak and customize all sorts of Windows settings and get rid of common annoyances.

Winaero has 18 main categories that contain several Windows tweaks, options, and functions. The main categories are Home, Bookmarks, Appearance, Advanced Appearance, Behaviour, Boot and Logon, Desktop and Taskbar, Context Menu, Settings and Control Panel, File Explorer, Network, User Accounts, Windows Defender, Windows Apps, Privacy, Tools and Get Classic Apps, each with its own set of options.

Some of the more useful items are the ability to show system information, customize the color of most things like title bars, use Dark Mode, disable Driver updates in Windows Update, disable the action center, live tiles, and Cortana. You can disable balloon tips, control the taskbar flash button count, remove the names and arrows from desktop shortcuts, disable the lock screen, customize the context menu, disable telemetry, and create shortcuts of many kinds.

There are options to change the OEM and registered owner, reset the icon cache, reset the Local Group Policy (group policy is available in Windows Pro and up editions), and get the old versions of Windows Photo Viewer, classic calculator, sticky notes as well as the classic Task Manager and MSConfig.

There are many tweaks and customizations in this program, but they are broken down into categories and functions in an interface that's easy to read. If you're used to tweaking and changing things in Windows you'll find most of them in one place. If you don't find one, check out the extensive list of software by the same developer for more programs.

I like the One Click Firewall, Restart Explorer, and the Classic Windows 7 games download contains the favorite games from Windows 7 including Chess, FreeCell, Hearts, Mahjong, Minesweeper, Purble Place, Solitaire, and Spider Solitaire as well as the Internet Games Backgammon, Checkers, and Spades.

The FAQ is extensive and a good place to get any questions answered about the prorgram.

Some tweaks apply only to a particular version of Windows. Winaero supports Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. It can be installed in Normal mode (with uninstaller and Start menu icons) or Portable mode.

VirusTotal gave it one flag, but none of the other sites that were used to check the program flagged any issues and no security software flagged it. I believe it's a false positive, though you might want to run the program in portable mode as that doesn't modify system files.

You can find a full list of features here. If you like to tweak, customize and remove Windows annoyances defnitely give Winaero Tweaker a try.

Hi!

I have been trying to get the Winaero Tweaker download from the listed site,
but I get absolutely nothing.

Have you another link to download this from somewhere else?

It is here - https://winaero.com/request.php?1796 - right above the donate button, I've just tried it and it is working.

Thank you. :)

When I go to the Winaero site to download Winearo site to download the Tweaker, I see various other downloads such as a driver utility and a converter and others but not the Tweaker.

The download link is the blue link in the text next to the Winaero screenshot (see below), though if you're not seeing it you can download it here:

Thanks Rhiannon! Just the program i was waiting for.The boot screen and logon on Windows 10 bug me to no end. The spinner and "Please wait" in particular. I've changed boot and login screens since Windows 98.

You're welcome. :)
Boot and logon screens are not my cup of tea either, I've disabled them in every version of Windows they appear on. I'm the only one who accesses my computers, no need for separate logons.

I have found the Winaero site (and this one!) very useful and informative over the years. As well as regularly updating the Tweaker app Sergey, the site's owner also posts articles showing how to do the individual tweaks including providing ready-made registry files for those unwilling to do the edits themselves, and other interesting items on Windows updates and changes.

It's a great site, I've been using it for a long time. I've used some of his reg files too. :)

RE: the Win 7 games-- just be sure to keep the installer. M$ tends to remove it when it updates. FYI ;)

Thanks for that, I've never had that happen to me so I didn't know it was an issue.

Yeah, I do this for a lot of older folks who miss their games (shame on M$ for removing the games the oldies like). However, I get called back after upgrades, as the games are removed!

That's interesting to know and not surprising, given Microsoft's activities since Windows 10 was released.
I'm with you, leave my programs alone. And do not replace the latest NVidia graphics driver with a generic Microsoft one.

I have been using this as a portable app for years with no trouble whatsoever. Almost all the tools have a "reset to default: button.

Thanks Rick. :)
