DaVinci Resolve

The best free video editor you can come across and even rivals some of the best paid software

Our rating:

Pros & Cons:

Professional non-linear video editing combined with advanced color corrector. Scalable and resolution independent, suitable for personal, studio or large Hollywood usage.
Contains complex interface that might be difficult for average users.

Our Review:

Produced by the Blackmagic Design, this software takes the world of free video editing into another level. It is equipped with non-linear video editing and colour correctors, and finishes all-in-one system amongst other basics such as trimming, cutting and combining.

The good thing about this software is its all-purpose use whether you are just an individual with your YouTube channel videos, working in studios or an entire Hollywood production. I was surprised to find out such a good and useful software is actually free and you can get it from Blackmagic Design website here.

Why don't you go ahead and see it for yourselves? I bet you will like this one. Well, you can give me feedback on the comments section below, so we can further review this software together.

No question at all: Davinci Resolve is by far the best free video editing software.
The review gives a con: "Contains complex interface..." No kidding--the manual is more than 1,200 pages!
Nowhere on the BlackMagic website does it give system requirements, at least not for version 14. Let's just say 8 GB RAM and a hefty graphics card is the minimum.

I installed and then tried launching but get a license dongle error - the support forum seems to indicate you need a usb dongle with the license key on it - wtf?! The error states you can get the key free on the site but I gave up trying to navigate to where that possibly could be.
Was looking forward to trying it out - but not worth the hassle and time trying to get it working....

It does look really cool. Way beyond my learning curve. I'm even having trouble downloading it.I wish I could tell you and still look smart, but no. I'm sure it's one of those where the answer is right in front of me, but I can't see it:

When I go to the site, I can't figure out which download button I'm supposed to use to get the free version. One problem is that the link in the article (the one that says "here"), links back to THIS page. I tried the website link but got lost. There are so many products to choose from.

If its possible, could I get a link directly to the download page, and the exact name of what I'm supposed to be downloading, please?

The link to the developer's website has now been updated. Give it a try darknesseternal if that works for you.

Downloaded the product and installed it. No problem. Opened it and tried to import a video file - nothing!

Reading further I find it will not process many file types, including *.WMV, which I often use for PowerPoint presentations.

Any suggestions?

The "DaVinci Resolve 14 Configuration Guide" is available at https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/family/davinci-resolve-and-fusion. This contains system requirements; it requires a powerful computer. After reading this, I didn't attempt to install it on my modest PC. I suggest you should review this before installing.

I could not find the free version either. Only a beta version.
Also they want all your details on registration and in this day and age, that means they are trading your details so for that one reason I am not going to try and find the free version.

It's not free, it's $299!! Please stop saying it's free!

DaVinci Resolve 15 is free, DaVinci Resolve Studio isn't. The download links for both are almost at the foot of this page: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/ or on BlackMagicDesign's main support page for Resolve/Fusion: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/family/davinci-resolve-and-fusion

Just to say that Resolve 16 is now available for free, but it's a 1.5GB download.

Am downloading now and will hopefully report back with experience.
