Tech Treats

This category is reserved for finds by our Editor Rhiannon. Items should consist of at least two paragraphs. The first should be a "teaser" paragraph. This paragraph will be automatically published in our RSS feed. It should state the nature of the find and the benefits without mentioning the product name or providing a product link. For example: "For months I've been looking for a good way of deleting 'undeletable' files. Finally I've discovered a free utility that does the job reliably and simply." The second paragraph should at the very least, expand the benefits, name the product and provide a product link. For example: "Unlocker is a tiny 230 KB utility that works with Windows 2000 up to Windows 10. Just right click on the 'undeletable file', select 'Delete with Unlocker' from the context menu and next time you boot the file will be gone for good." You can have a third paragraph if you wish; indeed as many as you like. However there must at least be a second paragraph after the opening "teaser" paragraph.

Use Your Webcam as a Security Camera and Motion Detector

Free software detects what happens when you aren't there.

Syschat has an article on how to use a webcam as a security device to monitor unattended locations using Yawcam free software. The article outlines two ways to use software to record activity - one takes a picture at regular intervals of your choice and can store them offsite. The other one records activity when motion is detected.

Compact Notes Organizer With Some Great Features

This notes organizer has a small footprint but packs a lot into it.

Quotepad is a desktop notes organizer that's easy to use and is free to download.
Quotepad is great for quick notes you want to save. It's small (930 KB) and it has some great features. My favorite feature is when you copy some text from a website, Quotepad saves the note and the URL of the page it was from. Even better, with a few key strokes or a click or two, its automatically pasted into Quotepad.

15 Must-Have Web Apps for Students

Great collection of applications aimed at students with many applications that can be used by anyone.

This is an interesting collection of web apps over at Digitizd. Some are new to me, some not, and as far as I can tell, all are free.
Some of the applications on the site include project management, collaborative writing, mind mapping, budgeting, note taking, flashcards, an automatic bibliography maker, and more.
Drop by and have a look, one of these applications might be just what you're looking for.

Easily Create a Designer Quality Website for Free

Build Your Own Websites have been around for years. None of them interested me until now. I've finally found an application that has quality design and ease of use. No coding needed, just drag and drop. High quality templates and being able to modify themes easily make this a choice application.

SnapPages has more features than you would expect in an easy to use program.
Dragging and dropping text boxes, widgets (think Google Maps), and photographs is effortless. Also included is an integrated calendar and photo album viewer.

A Safe Way to Use Your Email Address on Forums & Websites

You should never post your real email address to a forum, comments form or other webpage that's publicly accessible.  If you do it will almost be certainly be harvested by spammers.

Some people try to get around this by "munging" their email address, that is, disguising the address so that only a human can understand it.  A typical example of munging is bill(at)microsoft(dot)com.

Munging has become less effective as spammers harvesting robots have got smarter. Many can now decrypt the most common munging techniques such as the example above.

Free 16x16 Icon Set for Web Designers

This set of 500 16x16 png icons by Marcis Gasuns consists of objects useful in web design.

This LED icon set is a development of previous icon sets such as "Drunkey Love", "Silk" and "Fugue."  As you can see from the small sample above, the quality is first class.

Thanks to Alex White for the suggestion.
