This category is reserved for finds by our Editor Rhiannon Dent.
Items should consist of at least two paragraphs.
The first should be a "teaser" paragraph. This paragraph will be automatically published in our RSS feed. It should state the nature of the find and the benefits without mentioning the product name or providing a product link. For example:
"For months I've been looking for a good way of deleting 'undeletable' files. Finally I've discovered a free utility that does the job reliably and simply."
The second paragraph should at the very least, expand the benefits, name the product and provide a product link. For example:
"Unlocker is a tiny 230KB utility that works with Windows 2000 and XP. Vista users are out of luck. Just right click on the 'undeletable file', select 'Delete with Unlocker' from the context menu and next time you boot the file will be gone for good."
You can have a third paragraph if you wish; indeed as many as you like. However there must at least be a second paragraph after the opening "teaser" paragraph.
This weeks wallpaper shows layered oak leaves in bright yellows, oranges and reddish golds. It's the perfect wallpaper for this time of year in a goodly part of the northern hemisphere, where Autumn/Fall/Harvest (take your pick) is in full swing, or for anyone who likes colorful leaves. :) Icons show up fairly well on this wallpaper, though the rich colors don't provide a lot of contrast.
Print Flush falls into the "best utility you didn't know you needed" category. It solves the problem of print jobs getting stuck in the print queue without additional steps. You can always clear the print queue manually, which can involve several steps up to and including rebooting your computer, but having a little program (little being just 1 KB) that can do it with one click makes it so much easier. :)
This weeks wallpaper displays a map of the Earth. One half is daylight with oceans, continents and polar caps, the other half is night, with lights showing the populated areas of the continents. Textured backgrounds and moon and sun icons frame the map giving it some pop and interest without being intrusive.
One of my favorite Firefox features for years (until it was removed) was the ability to right click on an image or other page element such as a link and have a small window open up with the details such as the size of an image. Element Properties returns the 'Properties' menu item that was removed in Firefox 3.6 to the context menu. :)
This weeks wallpaper shows a wall of uneven wood bookshelves with creaky wooden ladders, lit by candle lanterns on the shelves, the only source of illumination. Moody and on the dark side, this wallpaper shows icons quite well. Book titles are in Russian since this wallpaper was created by vladstudio. :)
SciTech Daily has been serving up Science and Technology News since 1998, and doing it quite well I might add. Their blend of content often keeps me looking around the site when I really need to be doing other things. :)
