It works fine for me. Could you please check this again.

These links appear to return a 503 error for unregistered users. Logged in, they work fine. This has now been reported. MC - Site Manager.

Thanks Katronia for pointing out. This issue has now been fixed.

I appreciate all the work it takes to keep up something like this, so don't take this as a criticism. Over HALF the download links did not work for various reasons: Site or game download is non-existent; Game is a demo only; advertising site (not the game site), etc.

Hopefully you can find a good volunteer to manage this category. :)

To keep the site running for freeware games also requires you to pay for hosting charges, freeware game developers tend to shut their sites down. But the download links will still be valid on other sites.

If you could point out which games have non-existant homesite it would be of great help. Also I dont think I've included any Demo games in the list. Could you tell me which one?

I went through the whole list again (of the links I followed - maybe only 40 or so), so in trying to remember, this is a few of the troublesome ones I could recall:

* Penumbra - demo
* BASS (Beneath a Steel Sky) - the site has questionable security (per Firefox) and the download appears to be for the making of a game CD, so I didn't download it.
* Ben There, Dan That - same site problems as BASS and others there ( and it lists the download file as ""
* Sudoku Cracker - Download link at site has this error: "Fatal error: Call to undefined function initdoc() in /home/webby476/public_html/subdomains/downloads/sudoku/download.php on line 4"
* Isanaki Sudoku - Following download link: "ERROR: 410 Gone" - BUT going to the home site and finding the download works.
* KSudoku - at Sourceforge. After a download, instructions say it wants you to run a "terminal" to compile the program. ???
* Fantasy Tennis - Link opens a page at but no such game is found.
* LinCity-NG - "Server not found"

1. About Penumbra, although it's written as a demo, it's a full freeware version. Actually the game was created to show the capabilites of their game engine, before their commercial game  Penumbra: Overture was released, hence the name Tech Demo. I believe the game had around full 14 levels.

2. Beneath a Steel Sky was an award winning game of 1995. It was commercial but later turned freeware. Although you need to do a few tweaks to work on modern machines. The download is for the full game itself. Gamershell is a popular site, no risks to download from there.

3. Ben There, Dan That went freeware when it's sequel Time Gentlemen was released. It has a pay what you want policy, and the last time I played it, I think I set the slider to 0$ and the game worked fine.

4. Sudoku Cracker  and others - I don't have those games you mentioned in this article.

5. Fantasy Tennis - The game has been shut down, so I'll remove it from the  list

6. LinCity NG - I have updated the download link.

Thanks for the follow up. The sudoku puzzle games were from a link in the article under "Best Free Puzzle Games" as a 'related' category. Sorry.

I''d have to go through the whole list again (of the links I followed - maybe 40 or so), but I will scan through and see if I can recall the troublesome ones, and let you know.

As far as freeware sites & freeware game creators, I always appreciate what they do and I also wonder how they have the time to do such stuff without getting paid. So I certainly understand when a game or site goes down.

I'll let you know ....
