Audacity is an easy-to-use, multi-track audio editor and recorder for Windows, macOS, GNU/Linux and other operating systems, developed by a group of volunteers as open source.
Sure, it is not a professional DAW but for a free and light-weight product it provides a whole lot of audio recording and editing features. You want a quick start on learning to work with audio files, this is the product to start with.
I used it myself once to filter out some disturbing noise from an audio recording and was stunned about how well the result was in the end. I learned a lot from the large community and also from the detailed online manual.
Not really crazy about the embedded tracking software that being used with the last few versions. Sticking with the clean older versions until the forks are released.
