Poll Results: Do You Want to Receive Gizmo’s Freeware Items Twice Weekly or Every Weekday

First let me thank the thousands who voted in our recent poll on how regularly you want to receive our RSS feed or email notifications.  And thanks too for the hundreds of comments that you left on the voting pages.

The Results

The final vote tally was:

Every weekday:  3296 votes (59%)

Twice weekly:     2281 Votes (41%)

Although the majority voted to continue the current practice of notifications every weekday a significant minority wanted  less frequent notifications.

Those who wanted daily notifications said they found real value in our suggestions and didn’t want to miss out on anything. The general sentiment was well expressed by one reader who commented “Man, who couldn't vote for a daily treat? Keep them coming maestro.”

The main reason given by those who wanted fewer notifications was the lack of time available to follow up daily suggestions. “I enjoy getting them twice a week. Getting something on a daily basis sometimes gets lost. Twice a week keeps your posts fresh and something to look forward to.”

Many felt too that the emphasis should always be on quality not quantity. “Quality is the most important feature -- it's what you are famous for!!”

Overall it is clear that while the 59% majority of our users are happy with the existing every-weekday notifications we are going to have to address the needs of the 41% minority.  So we’ve decided to start a new RSS feed.

A New RSS Feed for those who want less Frequent Notifications

We’ve started a new digest RSS feed that will only have one new post each week. This will be posted every Thursday.  You can see a sample here: http://www.techsupportalert.com/rss-weekly-digest-20-june-2010.htm

Each post will consist of a list of all the items that have been featured in our daily feed so that means generally five items.
I’ll flag for your attention items I personally think are of special interest.  I expect to flag only one or two items each week.

This means you will only have to check our offerings once a week and furthermore the most useful items will be highlighted.

There will be one exception to this one-item-per-week schedule. If I come across a great offer that is time limited, I’ll send you a special notice just for that one item to ensure you don’t miss out.

What you need to do

If you are happy with the current notification service you don’t need to take any action. You will continue to receive notifications each weekday just as you have received them in the past.

If want fewer notifications then you’ll need to sign up to our new once-weekly digest RSS. Here's what you need to do:

If you currently subscribe via your RSS reader or aggregator such as Google/ig

  • Unsubscribe from the existing feed using the unsubscribe feature of your RSS reader
  • Subscribe to the new feed by pasting the feed address below into your RSS reader:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/GizmosFreeware-TopSelectionsWeeklyDigest

If you currently subscribe to the RSS feed via email notification

  • Unsubscribe from the current daily service by clicking the unsubscribe link that appears at the bottom of every email notification.
  • Subscribe to the new once-a-week notification service by entering your email address in the box below or clicking here.  All subscriptions have to be confirmed by return email so keep an eye out for confirmation email. It normally arrives within 5 minutes.

    Enter your email address:

    Delivered by FeedBurner

I do hope that the new service will meet your needs. I certainly will be giving it my best shot to make it work in the best possible way.  However should you think it can be improved just leave a comment below.

Thanks again for voting

Hi Ian, Kudos on your 'conflict resolution' from this poll.

There is a third category. Some weeks I can't cope with the daily notifications, and some weeks the once a week aggregate catches me at a wrong moment and later on I often don't get back to it. So I'm opting for both deals. Yay!

And hi-fives to all on the Gizmo team for superlative services rendered over years running. Unalloyed awesomeness, really.

To the dudes and dudettes at gizmo's freeware, thank you for doing what you do; sifting the gems from the duds, informing, linking and generally making cyber info overload manageable. Thank you.

Its really great that you went with pleasing everybody instead of disappointing one group or the other. The work - and now the extra work - you put in is appreciated.

So why do a survey? You did what you wanted to do anyway. Save money. LOL!

What an odd comment. I thought we did exactly what what the survey results suggested! Besides creating yet another RSS feed is nothing but additional work for me so why would I want it other than to meet the needs of our users? Very strange comment indeed.

"Subscribe to the new once-a-week notification service by entering your email address in the box below."

There is no 'box below' other than the comment box! ????

Not sure why you can't see the subscription box so I added a text link as well.
