That blog post is from 2011. It also says Digsby has been acquired by Tagged.. the website of which has got yellow WOT rating, and has got that rating because of spamming. Since nearly 2 years, there has not been any new post on their blog, after this announcement, which makes the situation regarding development of Digsby quite doubtful. Unless we get something concrete on present situation, or future development of the program, I don't think it will be considered here. Atleast the Digsby site has now got green WOT rating. Still, the above facts do matter.

Let's see what the editor of this category thinks.

Did you download ColorCop from Softonic? That download from Softonic provides their own downloader, which must be the cause for the extra stuff in the download. Try downloading the software from the home site of the software itself, which should be clean. We will soon change the download link in the article to the download page of the home site.

Sorry for the trouble caused, and thanks for pointing this out.

view
2 years 3 weeks ago Best Free Color Picker Anupam

Well, an apology is necessary, because the Softonic link should not have been there. We try out best to keep the users safe from any such bad links, but this one was missed, because the editor is heavily busy these days.

CNET and Softonic have started wrapping the installers with their own download programs, and so we have put into force a policy to remove links to them on the site. We have removed them from most reviews, but we might have missed some, like in this one.

So, thanks to you for alerting us, and I hope you did not have any major problems on your system. The links in the review have now been updated.

For alternate downloads, Softpedia is a good download site.

Just because of a single issue, you can't blame everything on the developers, or start to say that Avast is bad. I have been using Avast since long time now, before on XP, and now on Windows 8, and I haven't come across a major problem yet, in fact no problem that made me think about Avast as a bad program.

Rather than post such messages, you should work with the developers to provide them with proper information regarding the issue. Avast team is quite responsive, and fixes the problems fast. Yes, a few of the recent releases have had some problems at first, and so, I first observe the forum for any ongoing issues before updating to the latest version. Usually, the problems are fixed quickly, and the updated versions face no problems.

With so many machines out there with different configuration, different OS, different co-installed programs, you can expect a few issues. If you face an issue, post about it in their forum, give them information, and work with them.

Avast is a great product, and I don't think the editor is going to make any changes in the review about it, just because of the single issue you pointed out.

And anyways, even if you did go to wrong page, you should be careful enough to see that this article mentions WinAero, and not VisualBee, and you should not have downloaded it, and even if you downloaded, you should not have installed it.

You did something wrong at your end it seems.

Vic, in that respect, even the My Computer, Recycle Bin, Network, and My Documents, etc are also not default, since they too have to enabled from the Personalize options, when you install the OS fresh. I can't recall for Windows 8 exactly, but it has to be done in XP to Windows 7.

And I think enabling the shortcut this way is easier than the 4th option. Atleast, general users will find it easier. Maybe you can include this one as an option too?

As suggested by Vic, after making a repair disc, and also an image of the system, using the above links, maybe you can try installing Windows from the DVD to see if the key works. I think it should. Only way to find out is giving it a try.

But, please make sure that before you do that, you make an image, and back it up properly to an external drive, or somewhere safe. Also backup your data. And take care not to overwrite, or delete the recovery partition of the laptop.

All these precautions are necessary in case you cannot install Windows, and you will have to revert back.

Panda Safe is a free product, and therefore, it can be mentioned here. Our site is a freeware based site, and therefore, we discuss only freeware. Thanks for the comment. I was not aware of Panda Safe Browser. Did some reading, and I think to use it, you should have VirtualBox installed on the computer, which is a bit "heavy" software. Whereas Sandboxie is quite lightweight. Anyways, there are alternatives, yes, and its on the user with which he feels more comfortable.

view
2 years 5 days ago An Introduction and a Quick Guide to Sandboxie Anupam

Hi Jaxon, sorry for the edit. This being a freeware site, we allow discussion/mention of only freeware, and edit out commercial stuff, otherwise it just attracts more commercial related stuff and spam. I hope you understand.

As for what you say about needing any other security software... those are still needed, because although Sandboxie provides an isolated environment, still, it does not scan the stuff for malware activity, etc, nor does it stop a program from sending out information to the internet, even when running under Sandboxie. Therefore, it's not a replacement for security software like antivirus, or firewall. Sandboxie just provides an isolated environment so that any malware detected cannot escape out to the system.

An antivirus is still needed to make sure that the downloaded files, etc are not malicious. Because, if you need to take the files out of Sandboxie, you need to be sure it's not malicious. An antivirus, or an antispyware takes care of that.

Atleast general, inexperienced users will still need security software. But yes, if you are experienced enough, and have enough confident on Sandboxie, then you can do without these security software. Some of our site members who are experienced enough are doing that. But still, they do follow safe practices, and also take enough precaution to scan the downloaded files with an on-demand antivirus/antispyware. So, you still have to be careful.

About the pen drive/external drive... yes, if you unplug them before closing browser, or emptying Sandboxie, the stuff will remain saved inside it.

view
2 years 4 days ago An Introduction and a Quick Guide to Sandboxie Anupam

Jaxon, I haven't used that software which you are talking about, so I can't say what are the differences between it and Sandboxie. All of the software I use are free ones, so I don't need to go for a commercial software, and therefore, I don't have any idea.

But, it sounds like a virtualization based software too, like Sandboxie, so if it works for you, then it's good, and you can keep using it. There are other software like Sandboxie, which work on the principle of virtualization and sandbox, like VirtualBox, ToolWiz Time Freeze, Bufferzone, etc. Sandboxie is lightweight, easy to setup, and easy to use, and that's why many people like Sandboxie. You can read the article, try Sandboxie, and see for yourself how it compares to the other software. Then, you can use the one which you like, and which is easy to use. With Sandboxie, you will not have to wait the extra time that you told about.

About antivirus, there are many free excellent antivirus present, and if you are looking for a change, you can try them out. I have been using free antivirus for years now, and haven't been infected, like many others on this site.

For longer discussion, please start a thread in the forum (link has been provided by MC in reply to your comment below), and we will have the discussion there. Glad you commented, and it would be good to have more discussion with you.

Generally when new versions are released, specially major ones, they may take a bit of time to stabilize. Even with all the beta testing, possibilities of bugs are there, because of the many different systems with many different configurations.

What I do nowadays, is to just watch their forum for a few days, after the release. If there are no major issues being reported, then I go ahead with the install. If there are major issues, the Avast team is prompt, and they release an update to address those issues, as they are posted and reported on the forum.

So, if you encounter an issue, the best thing would be to post on their forum, and let them know about it, and give them details, so that it will help them in fixing the problem. Or, they will provide some help on diagnosing the issue, and fixing it, or directing you to an already posted solution on the forum for the problem.

Avast had released a new version of Avast 8, fixing the bugs reported, so maybe you can try that? I haven't updated to Avast 8 on my machine yet, but will do soon. Have been keeping a watch on their forum.

1 year 50 weeks ago Best Free File Copy Utility Anupam

Rather than look for a different copy software, or, taking out files, you should look for ways to clean the infection out of your system. If the infection is removed, your copy process will start to work normally, and there won't be any need to take files out. Also, if you take files out before removing infection, chances are that the infected files will also be copied along with the non-infected ones, and when you copy those files back after a reformat and reinstallation, the infection will be back. So, do alternate scans with other security software, like Malwarebytes Antimalware, Superantispyware, Kaspersky Rescue Disc, etc. If you are not comfortable doing it on your own, get some help at www.bleepingcomputer.com forum, where they will guide you properly.

Also, since the normal copy process is not working, I don't think a copy software will work too.

If there will be a free version out, then let's wait for that free version. Until that happens, I am sorry we won't be allowing the product to be mentioned on the site/forum. We do not consider a "free trial" to be a free software.

Once they release a free version, feel free to post here, and we will check it out. Again, if the free version is severely crippled, we won't be allowing it.

view

view
1 year 50 weeks ago Best Free Desktop Search Utility Anupam

Severely crippled will be where the features in the free version lack so much, that practically, it's of very little use.

And I don't know why when we state the site rules, or the policies, people start to question the integrity of the site, or the team members here. Just because you don't like the policies, or the rules, it does not mean that we are running some scam here, or favoring specific products, or being paid to favor products, or anything of that sort. This site is big, and if you have cared to look at the several reviews around here, you will know that this site presents its work honestly. There are no favors, nothing, and we do not get paid from anyone. All the team members here are volunteers and work for the site on their free time. So, before you make such statements, please think twice. Don't make ridiculous statements!

crank, were you able to locate the changelog for Paragon 2013? I could not. Would be good to read the changelog to see what they changed, or fixed, or what's new.

I also wanted to ask, since the newer hard drives have now different sector layout, how will this affect the imaging? I mean, will these imaging software will be able to image in accordance with the new sector layout?

Also, if someone images an old hard drive and installs it over a newer hard drive, will it be OK, or will it cause problems because of the new sector layout in the newer hard drives?

Thanks for any enlightenment on this subject. Have been wondering about it since long.

I may give a test ride to Paragaon 2013 soon, since I have to install Windows XP on my older hard drive, for testing purposes, and it will require imaging.
I don't think I will be trying imaging for Windows 8 any soon, but I may, after I finish up with Windows XP. Will share my experiences :).

1 year 50 weeks ago Best Free Drive Cloning Software Anupam

OK, here's my experience with the installation, and it hasn't been good.

I started the installation, entered the serial etc, and proceeded with it, everything was normal. But, towards the end, when the progress bar showed that the installation was just about to be over, it just stuck there, and kept moving. I waited for many minutes, but it just stuck there. After my patience limit was over, I tried to cancel the setup. It asked if I was sure, and I clicked on yes, but even after that, nothing. I then killed the installer from the task manager. And after that, my computer went crazy. When I opened My Computer, out of my several hard drives, only two were showing, and one was partially showing, means, just the icon, but no size :/ ...

I tried to shut down the computer, but no response. And after a few more tries, everything just started to sort of hang. Ultimately, I had to hard reboot the computer.

Thankfully, after the hard reboot, everything was normal. Phew! Otherwise, I had thought that, that's it, either I will lose data, or maybe I will have to reinstall Windows 8 :/. Thankfully, all returned to normal. Paragon icon was there on the desktop, but not there in Add/Remove.

I decided to install again. Started the installation, and it behaved weirdly... where it shows how much space it would occupy, it showed only 12kb, whereas before it had showed in several MBs. Also, some stuff previously seen on screens was not seen. Weird really. The installation was also pretty fast after that. Thankfully, it now appears to be installed fine. It shows in Add/Remove, and is also able to run normally from the shortcut. So, I think it's installed fine.

Really gave me a scare though. From the interface, it does not look like anything has changed from the previous version. Looks all same to me. Will make an image of the system later to see how it goes. Right now, I will just recover from the scare it gave me :D.

BTW, during installation, apart from the main program, it also shows to install hot core driver. It was unselected by default, but I had selected that option, since it said it was used to image locked volumes. It also said, it was needed for Windows 2000. Don't know if it's required for other versions of Windows too. Was it required for Windows 8?

view
1 year 50 weeks ago Best Free Drive Cloning Software Anupam

Well, I have a new machine with Intel i-3 and 4GB RAM... I think those are enough resources for a program not to hang like this. Maybe it was doing something, but it was stuck for about 15 mins or so. Maybe it was waiting for some resource to be released or something, don't know.
Maybe it was because of the hot core driver? Don't know.

Maybe I will uninstall it, and give a go at installation again.

crank, the hot core driver is disabled by default, and you will have to check it to install it. If you installed with all default, then I don't think you would have noticed it. I am thinking that somehow it might have to do something with the issue. I can only guess.

About alignment in newer drives, Seagate have some kind of working by which you do not have to align the drive manually, it takes care of that by itself. It's one of the reasons I bought a Seagate drive. Because, in WD, if you are installing Windows XP, then you have to manually align the drive first, by running their software. And I was unsure, whether I would be installing Win XP, or not. So, to avoid all that trouble with this alignment issue, I just bought Seagate. It's not an issue with the modern Windows like Vista and 7/8, but for XP, it is, atleast with WD drives.

I don't know about UEFI issue. I will have to check if my motherboard supports BIOS, or UEFI :D. I don't use RAID, or SSD anyways, so I think I won't be running into the issues that you did? Hopefully so :P.

I know and understand the situation you are in crank. I have been there. A failing hard disk is a nightmare, and add to that more and in quick succession, it's just unimaginable. Am glad you had backups and you were able to salvage most of the data... sometimes things are not so lucky.

Lately, hard drives have become really unreliable. Maybe with the increase in demand, the quality has gone down?

Maybe larger drives are more susceptible to early damage? Don't know.

Problem is, what to trust, nothing is reliable today. I have now a 1TB Seagate hard drive in the new system. It does not have much of data, but there is still a lot, and to back it all up, I have a 1TB external hard drive. I intend to keep copies of important data on both. But really, even external hard drives are not that reliable, or are they? With so much of data now, it's really hard to maintain, and also backup.

Thanks for posting mouser :). We at Gizmo's are fans of DonationCoder :).. so the admiration is mutual. Thanks for a great product. I used to use PicPick until now, but since they have become quite aggressive with the extras bundling, I tried Screenshot Captor recently, and I like it a lot. I was putting off using it, because from the looks, it looked like a program made for geeks with a learning curve.. but I gave it a try, and found it was easy to use. The interface though, with loads of stuff, gives the impression that the program might be a bit difficult to use :).

Keep up the excellent work. Will try the new version soon.

Thanks for the suggestion crank, I will look into that option. But, I think it will require purchasing another 1 TB disk, but I can't afford that now :). I have external 1 TB hard drive, and I will be relying on that now, for the backups.

I wouldn't consider cloud as an alternative, ever, I think. First, with my slow internet speed, it would be crazy to upload the data... plus, and most importantly, I wouldn't trust a third party ever with my personal files.

Thanks for the suggestion about docks, will find out if it's available in the market here, and if it is, costs how much.

I have had excellent experience with USB 3.0. It's definitely noticeably faster than USB 2.0.

Thanks again Jesse :). Great to know about the latest release... the new feature sounds great! Will download soon, and try it out. Will surely post in the DonationCoder forum, if I have anything to share regarding the program :).

Having problems with recovery media of Paragon Backup & Recovery 2013. When I reboot using the recovery media, it boots up fine, but it fails to detect any of the hard disks. I have two. One is 1TB Seagate, and the other is 160GB Seagate... both SATA. The same happens with recovery media of version 2012, which worked fine earlier with my older system.

The current SATA mode as I checked in BIOS is IDE. Do I need to change to AHCI? Can that be the cause of the problem? I don't have much knowledge of AHCI mode, or, what effect will it have on changing to it.

Also, during recovery media creation, it said about being able to create WinPE boot disk, but I did not see that in the options. Only creates a Linux based disk.

I was able to create the image for the 160 GB HDD using Paragon BAR installed on the 1TB HDD. But, I want to be able to do that using the recovery media too. I have XP on the 160 GB HDD, and I intend to use it for testing, which will require putting the base image on it again after one round of test and that's better done with 1 TB HDD disconnected, and image restored via the pen drive, with recovery media running from the CD.

I think it's time to try Macrium Reflect? :D

Thanks for the reply crank :). I will try switching over to AHCI, it can be done via BIOS. I hope nothing breaks :D.

I have worked with the Linux based recovery media before, and it works great. Have built image, and also restored using the recovery media. It's just that on this computer, it's not working. I think it's because of the current IDE mode.

Thanks again :).

Yes, the Softpedia link is allowed.
However, I just checked, and both the links to MBAM are working. Maybe some problem at your end?

You must be having a pen drive. Just download Recuva portable to the pen drive, and run it from there itself.

And yea, using Shift+Del to get rid of files/folders instantly can be dangerous as you have now experienced. Try not to do that :).

Rob, it is not necessary to boot the PC from a USB drive. You can boot it normally, and then run Recuva from the pen drive.. it won't write anything to the system.
Good luck :)

Don't worry about that too much. Booting the system shouldn't cause much changes to the system.. very negligible. So, you can overlook that. Just try not to save/create any new files. Other than that, it should be fine. Go for it :D

Just wondering PBJ, since you have tried both LibreOffice and OpenOffice, which one do you find better?

supanut, Firefox has the feature to block flash and java, but it's kinda hidden. It's been there since a few versions. To turn that feature on, open about:config, and search for string plugins.click_to_play. Toggle the value from false to true. Flash content will not load up automatically now.

1 year 48 weeks ago Best Free Web Browser Anupam

Of course, if you have FlashBlock installed, it won't allow flash to play automatically :D. But, with latest versions of Firefox, you do not actually need FlashBlock, as the feature is now inbuilt in Firefox. You just have to turn that feature on via about:config. Look for plugins.click_to_play, and set it to true from false by double clicking on it.

Yes, NoScript might block flash too sometimes, if it's being done via a script.

Welcome :). Well, if you follow the changelogs of new releases, you will know what's new. We also discuss about the new releases in the forum.

Maybe they will make it as an option in later releases, who knows.

Yea, LibreOffice seems to be in continuous development, and they are improving it rapidly. So, that's good. I was curious as to how they fared out.

Joe, you have to enter about:config in the address bar :). There, it will show a list of all hidden configurations. Search for the string via the search box that I told above. Double click to toggle the value.

Pay attention to the warning that comes when you type about:config and hit enter. Keep track of what you changed.

Please don't edit the comment again and again to bump it. What kind of problems did u face on Avast?

view
1 year 45 weeks ago Best Free Antivirus Software Anupam

Well, since you use a beta version, you cannot really complain about it, can you? :). Beta versions are for testing purposes.

I have been using Avast 8 stable version, and I dont have any problems. Also, the releases generally take some time to stabilize because of different issues. So, it's best to wait for a while, and look at their forum to see if any issues are there. If there are not, then you can install the version, otherwise stick to the older version until the issues are resolved.

A new version of Avast 8 was out recently, but I have not updated yet for that reason.

I am using the latest version of Avast 8 on my Windows 8 PC, and it's working really well. I have Avast 8.0.1483. It is not beta, it's a stable version.

Yes, MSE does slow down the computer a bit, I have observed that too.. specially in opening the folders with exes, and in other areas too.

About you facing other problems, I think you should re-install it once again. MSE updates via Windows Updates without any problems, and the scan time should also hold.

However, I have seen that MSE updates occur very very slowly sometimes, like painfully slow.

Yea, Avast or Avira are better :). Although, if it's a low end computer with P-III or something, or 512MB RAM, performance will still be affected a bit.
