They have apparently removed all copies of the disclaimer post as well. It also seems that there is nothing in the licensing terms which makes it illegal to download & install this.

See this thread - http://forums.adobe.com/message/4980033 RE: Licensing.

I don't understand why Adobe doesn't just make an official announcement. It would only make them look better at this point. Maybe legal reasons? Bizarre.

I just wanted to state that I have just downloaded and installed the free version of Evernote thanks to this review and I have not found any trace of OpenCandy or other adware, toolbar etc. I'm not sure if it's not there any more or something weird happened during the installation. I guess that they have simply removed it.

The program seems to be really, really nice and I have also found an useful series of video tutorials here:

"It could be interpreted as Adobe giving away software for free."

An excerpt from the official page:

"Effective December 13 2012, Adobe disabled the activation server for Creative Suite 2 products and Acrobat 7 because of a technical glitch. These products were released over seven years ago and do not run on many modern operating systems. But to ensure that any customers activating those old versions can continue to use their software, Adobe issued a serial number directly to those customers. While it could be interpreted as Adobe giving away software for free, Adobe did it to help its customers."

Thanks for the catch Andrews. =O
mp3eagle - I'm not getting any error messages. FWIW it has a green WOT rating.
I don't like their pricing structure - they only accept certain forms of payment(Visa, Discover,JCB, Diners Club,LiveKash, SMS, Pulse and Euro Debit)but no PayPal, and they want you to pre-pay for music starting at $29.90 USD.
No refunds as you are committing those funds to be spent at their site......
Downloads are only good for 48 hours.
That said, all the individual songs I viewed are 15 cents, albums are $1.47 and the selection is good.
If you download a lot of music it may be a good bargain. Me, I'll take a pass on that one as I don't download that much music. :)

Okay Well I can't get this to work. I've tried everything I could think of. When I try launching the game regularly it wont launch. When I launch it with Windows XP Service pack 2 it launches, but there are lots of missing textures. I can't run the update installer, because all I get is a "1628: Failed to complete Installation" error. I've read all of the fixes posted, and none of them work. I've tried deleting my entire temp folder, and that doesn't work, and I also can't find the Local Security Policy thing anywhere. If you know how to fix any of this please any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any idea what that VCS2.zip is? Is it just the three CD's zipped or is it something special? Please let me know before I waste nearly 500mbs downloading what I already have. :)

If I were Adobe, I'd be giving this away just so people get used to using it (ala Windows & MS not really cracking down all that hard on pirates. Gates knows that once someone gets used to something, they resist change).

Yes, some folks may pirate, but generally, the grown-ups buy things & the no-accounts don't.

I want to thank Gizmo for posting this. I did buy CS2 a long time ago & lost it in a move.

What O.S are you having and it's version?

1. Do this first and then click on Graphics tab. Is the option for Detailed Texturing greyed out? Uncheck the option for Detail Texturing. Run the game again.

2. Some of your files might be corrupted, you might have to re-install the game again after uninstalling, or your downloaded file might have got corrupt, in this case you will have to re-download the game again.

3. Your system should be connected to the internet to play the game.

4. You will have to launch the game (Suffering.exe) twice to run properly in most cases.

5. You don't have to install the update patch if you're running the latest version of the game from the download site. (v 1.1)

Hello,

Ok I am confused. I got in trouble with anupam a few weeks ago for just telling someone to google a certain software program instead of providing the link to it.

So is it the case that we SHOULD link to a webpage that contains a specific freeware program but NOT directly link to that program itself?

Can you see where I am confused? Now I don't know what to do. What is the difference to providing a link to a page that contains a link to software and providing a direct link to that software? How can one option be more or less secure than another?

I'm not angry. I just confused and don't know what I'm supposed to do. I could not find those rules on this site despite looking for a full 5 minutes. Prove me wrong and show me they are easily and prominently accessible and I will buy a t-shirt if you have in xxl of course :-)

PS, I am a long time supporter of Gizmo well before he expanded the site to multiple moderators. I also wholeheartedly support the moderators like Midnight Cowboy, Anupam and Yourself. I am not the enemy :-)

Please advise as I'm sure I'm not the only person unsure here.

Paul, when suggesting a software, you should provide a link to its page, where others and moderators can take a look at it. People should not be required to chase the software, and its link by searching on Google. It saves time, and also, in case of multiple suggestions, you can imagine the kind of trouble, and time taken.

And while a link to a page is OK, link to direct download of any kind of file is not. While, the file may be fine from a trusted site, but in case of unknown sites, or non-trusted sites, who knows when the file can be replaced by malicious one. We do not want to be the one to be the cause for that, so that people cannot blame us that they got the file from our site, in case they think that mistakenly. Therefore, it's better to provide a link to the page. This is in accordance with a web expert on our team who advised this for the security of our site and its users.

I hope things are now clear :).

I always trusted Softpedia and it was my go to site for software downloads, even over the developer's site.

However, I recently got an dodgy download from there and will now be switching to FileHippo, where I have never had an issue.

The software I downloaded from Softpedia had SweetIM included in the download and even though I deselected SweetIm during the install, it installed itself onto my system and browsers. This is a well known issue with SweetIM as Firefox has banned it for this reason.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/blocked/i236

There was no warning at Softpedia of SweetIM being in the download. They do have a button to notify them of malware in the download and I advised Softpedia of this malware a week ago. They have not removed the item or changed the information on the page.

Unfortunately, there is no way of telling when this will occur with a download there. The "100% guarantee" is no longer valid to me.

Hi Anupam,

Thanks for the clarification.

From a security perspective I can't see the difference as people wanting the software will download regardless.

But in giving people one more chance to check the software from the perspective of how professional the website appears and I guess whether it flags the web of trust etc then ok fair enough.

Heck I'll buy a t-shirt anyhow. Now if I can only find that link - - -

Don't seem to see this listed, but is there and old link to the OLD recommendation for firewall setup that was here at this link http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-install-comodo-firewall.htm a few weeks ago?

I installed the new version of comodo firewall and hated it. After messing around with it for quite some time I decided it would not do and uninstalled it. I liked the old interface and customizability of the older V5 version way better, now I'm wishing I'd have saved your previous instructions for that old version somewhere since I found them quite handy and liked how my systems ran after your recommended mods.

Please post a link or something to those older firewall instructions if you would so I can at least save them off somewhere. I will not be updating my firewall to the new lamer Comodo Firewall and quite a few of my friends agreed and rolled back theirs as well (and disabled the updates). Classic example of why fix what wasn't broken. Thanks Chiron, I appreciate your webpage alot! -Scy

Paul, glad your niece is happy :), and that's what we like to see... people happy :). Kids are always smarter than us, and always pick up things faster. And with so much technology around them, it's just amazing to see how they can learn so quickly of everything.

On another note, CS2 is great for photo editing, but some people might not need such heavy software.. there are smaller, easier to use software for general purpose image editing, which also give great results, without spending much time to learn. These software can be seen here :

I guess this same situation is likely to be repeated by other sites too though.

IMO the software market is so fluid it must be a real nightmare trying to keep pace with changes to bundled components and rogue installers. Admittedly a week does seem rather long but I have no idea what Softpedia's general response time is.

Is this same software also hosted by FileHippo, and if so what is its status there?

I still find Softpedia to be the most reliable download source but IMO the initiative is best taken by the user and to this end I rely on the free version of WinPatrol and ToolWiz Time Freeze to guard against these things. MC - Site Manager.

In addition to this, AdFender also supports Avant, Chromium, Comodo Dragon, Epic, Flock, K-Meleon, Lunascape, Maxthon, Pale Moon, QTWeb, RockMelt and SRWare Iron.")

Sadly I can't find a full Gizmo's review although there are a few mentions. Good reviews for latest version 1.60 on Softpedia but some less positive comments on earlier Adfender versions on Wilders Security Forums.

If AdFender is a trustworthy and reliable programme then it will be a great boon to all IE users who otherwise have very limited access to free adblocking software.

Most likely it is about new Comodo 6 interface which for unclear reasons becomes completely terrible from the point of view of Firewall info. There is no way now to see the network activities unless you’ll install additional KillSwitch module. But even after that you need to drill down so deep in interface and wait for significant time to access this basic for any firewall information. At the same time, main interface provides nothing but huge useless pictures.

This is a really sad story with Comodo. Still providing very good job as firewall, the game-looking irresponsive non-informative new interface, lack of configurations abilities to switch-off additional modules (like sand box and virtual kiosk), updates notification pop-ups killing Comodo customers massively.

There are a lot of discussions on Comodo forum regarding the rush with which this version has been released with number of bugs and very questionable interface approaches developers proposed in versions 6. A big number of old Comodo users state for avoiding update to version 6 unless it will be changed and fixed.

view
1 year 31 weeks ago Best Free Firewall Protection MidnightCowboy

Thanks for sharing your opinion.

I'd venture that Comodo releasing things before they are ready is pretty much par for their course and one of the things that has frustrated me on more than one occasion over the years. I often felt general users were being used as unofficial beta testers despite the product not having such a tag.

As to the interface and feature changes I guess they might be forced into a re-think if enough users decide to vote with their feet.

Interesting times ahead. MC - Site Manager.

I’d agree with your ZA+Ativirus behavior observations with the kind of old hardware as my observations on my own box are pretty much the same. It is really resource hungry (both CPU and Memory). Also, according to matousec (which I’m trusting in tests as a base), ZA has a kind of poor security rating:
http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge-64/results...

Having the same old system I’m now stick with PrivateFirewall+Avast combination. With my hardware and several days observation this is the most light on resources combination with kind of good protection. Previously I’d stay for Comodo+Avast (or Comodo suite with its own antivirus, which will take more resources with questionable AV rate), but not anymore with Comodo 6.

Please understand that the highly misleading Matousec tests have nothing to do with firewall performance as they test the HIPS components. ZA only has a light HIPS and nothing as comprehensive as Comodo or OA so in their tests it will not perform in the top group. See this article for further information:

http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/matousec-personal-firewall-tests...

MC - Site Manager.

view
1 year 31 weeks ago Best Free Firewall Protection Teo

I did not talk about performance in conjunction with matousec tests results, but about protection. Whatever one needs HIPS or not it is own decision, but Firewall with HIPS provides better overall protection (maybe some time over-protection). So, if you can have better performance with more powerful firewall, then this is an advantage for me. Anyone could disable HIPS after all. Do you disagree with this point?

My idea was that PrivateFirewall+Avast provides better performance on my old box than ZA+Antivirus. Much better especially in CPU utilization. And my statement was that despite performance gain, protection will be not worst but probably even better in some cases. Do you think it is senseless? Are there any tests or other sources that shows ZA as better firewall in compare to PrivateFirewall or Comodo?

As I understand the author of the initial message I’ve replied to asked community members to share the experience so I decided to do this due to the similar situation I have with my own environment.

IMO it makes no sense to install especially security software and then begin to disable parts of it. Better to install a program that more closely meets your needs in the first place. Actually I did not want to discus HIPS here at all. My point was that from my observations, two firewalls have minimum impact on the host performance. For some reasons those firewalls are designed with HIPS included. I have no idea why well known firewalls without HIPS have more impact on system performance then those two, but I do not see any reason to overload especially old boxes by “non-HIPS” firewall with heavy system impact just because one do not what use HIPS. It could be turned off and as a result we get firewall with minimum performance impact on the host performance. That is a sense to disable software parts and actually “Basic Firewalls” part of this article describes this approach as well (disabling HIPS).

Your "Quick Selection Guide" shows Avast as using 4.8MB of space. I just replaced Lookout with Avast to use less memory (limited to 388MB total.)

Including the Anti-Theft feature, which is another downloaded program, Avast's total memory usage on my phone (Motorola Defy XT) is 8.2MB.

I don't know enough to comment on different memory usage for different Android versions. Just be aware.

1 year 31 weeks ago Best Free Antivirus App for Android Bryan Hix

Hey, IO.Hazard. The installed size of the Avast main program on my phone was actually 4.77MB, the size listed in your review.

The extra memory use came from the Anti-Theft feature. During installation, the main program actually downloaded another program from the home website. (I had to change a setting on my phone to allow installation of programs from unknown sources.) The Anti-Theft program size is 3.42MB.

Personally, I trust Avast so I wasn't alarmed. I'm just tight on internal memory. And after playing with my phone a little I'm noticing some lag which I anticipated considering my phone.

OK. Now I get it. Well, you can avoid some of the lag caused by Avast! by disabling some of Avast's features such as the Network Meter and the Message Shield (it has nothing to do with the Call & SMS filtering). I also noted that some precious RAM can be saved by disabling the "IQ Community" option as well as the scheduled tasks.

Is your phone rooted? If so, there are some free apps that could help your phone to manage its RAM in a smarter way without using those infamous task killers.

Following receipt of your reply and using the link where it says (Download here) I have downloaded as advised the latest stable version first named PotPlayer1.5.35161Upd.EXE.

However there is one small problem. It doesn’t provide the option for a 32-bit file. When I install my pc asks me to find the 32-bit option.

The link above named (http://www.dvbsupport.net/download/index.php?act=view&id=230) provides you with a file called PotPlayer1.5.35238.EXE. I have installed this but when you install the program it shows as Beta option.

Can you also help with this please, all I’m looking for is an up-to-date 32-bit stable version file.

Thanks again for your previous advice and help.

Regards,
Kevin

PotPlayer has 2 versions of itself. The latest stable version and the beta update version. At the top of posting the latest stable version is 1.5.35238. Daum still considers that the product is still in beta stage, hence all versions of PotPlayer has "beta" tag attached to it.

You don't have to install the latest beta (update) if the version number is smaller than the latest stable version. 1.5.35161 is the beta version update for the previous stable version 1.5.34665.

For now just install v 1.5.35248 and that's enough.

Hello 'Gizmo Richards',

Thank you so much for explaining this topic. I now finally understand what those friggin' CDA 'files' are on my CD.

Also, the ensuing discussion about how MAC and Linux treat these files was most interesting, and informative.

Thanks again fo writing such an informative article!

Have used this before but forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder. It simplifies a frequent task which is absurdly cumbersome to do manually. It would be nice though if it carried over any custom parameters such as memory settings to the new version as well.

I'm a fan of http://freeflashgamehq.com

There's a few games added every day it seems. It's too bad a lot of them are "dress-up" games... Those suck goat cheese...

It's not bad though.

Oh, and you don't have to register, which means no spam like a lot of them do... Have a whole nother email account specifically for that... its ridiculous...

EDIT:

Also, on a side note... All of the games are mochi, which means adds, but that isn't terrible either...

well i'm at noob level, I've played with both ubuntu and mint (as well as a few others). I liked Ubuntu but hated Mint due to trying to install wireshark. I was able to successfully install it (after a few hours) on ubuntu but could not duplicate it in mint. I installed mint after trashing my Ubuntu profile. Changed my desktop resolution and now i can't seem to undo it. Overall i preferred the look and feel of Ubuntu to Mint but I'm only a noob.

I tried using it but a warning came up saying, "All files...etc relating to Java would be deleted. Does this mean that all my programs that use Java will also be deleted? I may want to use them sometime if Java is made more secure.

Thanks, your site is great.

Files that just use Java are not deleted. Only files that are part of Java itself are deleted. If you prefer, you can just disable Java in your browser settings for add-ons or extensions.

Both of my Windows 7 64bit system have two or more versions of Java on them. I can't uninstall some of them, from the "Programs and Features" control panel. I have tried JavaRa with no success because it seems to use the normal uninstall methods. I am close to deleting all Java bits from the two "Program Files" and RegEdit'ing all Java related registry entries.

Anybody have a better solution, short of re-format and re-install Windows 7?

Have you considered using the free version of Revo Uninstaller? It should enable you to remove everything Java-related after you identify the executable and then it searches through both the hard drive structure and the registry to present its findings for your authorization to remove.

The latest Java patch issues by Oracle may not be secure for very long -- for more on that and other vulnerabilities, I highly recommend Brian Krebs' blog on security, and his latest post demonstrates that even the recent Java patch has already been identified by blackhat miscreants as insecure and will likely be exploited widely in the very near future:

Well done, Vic: timely advice indeed. By coincidence, earlier this afternoon my Mozilla Firefox Plug-ins Manager kicked in with a warning about Java and some suggested options -- the easiest, and quickest, of which was to hit the 'Disable' button. Which I promptly did.

I can't actually remember when I last needed Java for anything at all: a Broadband speed test via an online checker said it wouldn't work if Java wasn't enabled (which it was at that time) but no other website that I use / visit has stipulated a requirement for Java.

Disabling seems sensible and if I do eventually decide on uninstallation, then I'm trusting Revo to do its usual good works. Thanks again, Vic.

Read a funny editorial on rooting. I'm not a complete noob but not going to touch it.

You really MUST include Nitro Reader. One thing I need to make a lot of PDFs "readable" is the ability to convert them to plain text, eliminating tiny serif fonts and eye-tiring long lines. Nitro does excellent text conversion. It also extracts images better than most.

I gave up on Foxit and its naggy ways as soon as I tried out Nitro. The divorce is final.

Have to say, though, that for Plain-and-Portable you can hardly beat Sumatra, and it does some ebook formats rather well too.

It was also able to uninstall a couple of other programs that didn't have and uninstall option such as the Ask toolbar that gets slipped in with Java and many other packages. Thanks

It "appears" to have worked well. I delete several other problematic programs. However, I have just noticed that the QuickLaunch icon for Norton Ghost 15, that tells me that last night's backup went ok is now blank (a ghost) and appears to have been deleted somewhere in the process.
If all I have to do is re-install Ghost then I'll call this a success.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it but if you use the Windows version from that Java site, it comes with ASK software.
I didn't see where I could uncheck it when installing the Java, but I used REVO uninstaller after the Java install to got rid of it....

I probably should have made a point of saying that you should look over VERY carefully the list of hard drive file entries AND the list of registry entries which Revo finds to untoggle those items which you might not be sure about or definitely would not want to be deleted -- sorry. However, I'm glad that it seems to have worked out for you in this instance. Perhaps if your Ghost installation presents the capability for a repair option when selected under Programs and Features you won't have to re-install it from your source (either disk or download).

MoneyManagerEX has one major problem, and it is major. The QIF Import and Export function cannot handle split transaction categories. It enters split transactions as "unknown" category. It does this even with transferring accounts between MoneyManagerEX databases.
This problem has existed for a long time and there seems to be no intention of rectifying it.
It is a pity, as otherwise it would be one of the best personal finance applications.

I have a strange problem. I've image backed up and verified to both hd partition and true external usb drive with no problem using various imaging programs.

I saved an 80gb drive from a machine I discarded. Using a set of usb to ata cables (the one's that sell for < $10), I cannot image with anything to that drive and have it verify. Tried a number of times with Macrium, Paragon and terabyteunlimited software.

Fair enough, the drive is bad - no. I've formatted (NTFS), checked files, copied the backup file and can find nothing wrong with the hd. Ran cdcheck and anything else I could throw at it.

Does anybody else use similar cables and is there any particular problem with them or files created by an imaging program.
