1 year 32 weeks ago Best Free Audio-Video Format Conversion Program Anupam

I wrote this comment earlier in the day, when I was just looking at the programs, and had not actually used them yet. This night, I started to use the programs, and had to change my opinion about the couple of them that I suggested as options. So, I will now edit my original post, and update it accordingly. Will be a major edit actually.

I recently had to convert wma files to mp3, and so I was looking around at the converters I had in my collection, and I now see what you meant. Here is my experience with the different converters I had in my collection, which I tried.

Freemake Audio Converter does not have the option of VBR. So, it's now out of my list.

Any Audio Converter : http://www.any-audio-converter.com/any-audio-converter.php

It seemed like this one had the option of VBR, since I could access it in the settings, but when I converted the files, they were of CBR. Seems like those settings did not have any effect. The settings which had effect are on the RHS of the software, and they just provide CBR settings. Disappointed. Also contains bundled extras.

AudioCoder : http://www.mediacoderhq.com/audio/

In terms of settings control, this program looked like the one. But, I was pretty disappointed when I tried to convert files. I can't make it to work. It's quite quirky with the settings and all. Did the job too fast, and gave no output files. I think I am not able to set it up properly perhaps. But it's really quite strange.
Contains bundled extras.

Helium Audio Converter : http://www.imploded.com/products/helium-audio-converter.aspx

While it does have the option of VBR, but the settings are not good. Only bitrate control is provided, and that too, in weird sets. If you want extreme simplicity, then you can go for this.

DVD VideoSoft Audio Converter : http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-Audio-Converter.htm

It has the option of VBR, but not much control is provided over settings. The options in VBR are Economy, Standard, and Extreme. For simple purposes, and for general users, these settings will work just fine.
Be careful of bundled extras.

LameXP : http://mulder.brhack.net/#lamexp

Is basically a LAME front end, and we know LAME is the best encoder for mp3. Provides great options. For control over the settings, this program can be used.

Fre:ac : http://www.freac.org/

Earlier known as BonkEnc, and was basically a CD ripper... now it also comes with an audio converter. Like LameXP, it too provides great control over the settings. Recommended.

Hope this helps.

You have asked a good question. The procedure to reset a password may vary from one email provider to the next but often you will have provided an alternate email address. For many people it is easy to find or guess their second address. At Yahoo, for example, they give a hint about the second address that makes the guessing easier. I suppose to be even safer you should try to keep your alternate address as obscure as possible. If your alternate is "yourname@aol.com" it won't be hard to guess.

For some types of site all you need to do is answer the challenge question.

view
1 year 32 weeks ago A Key Step to Being Safer Online That is Frequently Overlooked Peter A Bell

In the case of email providers with the kind of lax security you describe, rather than take elaborate precautions to compensate for their deficiencies I think it might be advisable to avoid them altogether.

view
1 year 32 weeks ago A Key Step to Being Safer Online That is Frequently Overlooked v.laurie

I agree that email providers should have stringent security. However, many sites and services other than email providers use challenge questions as a security measure. Even if additional security tests are in place, it doesn't hurt to safeguard the answers to security challenge questions.

I've always thought that questions like mother's maiden name or city of birth and the like made for odd security questions. It's almost as if some non-forward thinker came up with a standard set of security questions that everyone else picked up and just started using without a second thought, such as...

Could the answer be found in the public domain?

Usually there are a few, more clever alternates so it may just be a matter of carefully choosing which question to use.

Good reminder about paying attention to the little details.

On January 7th, I posted a comment on this article, which comment has since been removed by the Moderators.

To those who may have seen my comment, which included my attempt at tongue-in-cheek humor, please be advised that I was JOKING.

Specifically:
1. I did NOT co-invent the Interent with former Vice President Al Gore fifteen years ago.
2. I have NOT trademarked the use of "Elizabeth Taylor" as an answer to any security question asking, "What is your favorite color?"
3. I have no reason to believe that "Vic Laurie" is not Vic Laurie's real name.
4. To the best of my knowledge, Apple and I do NOT retain the services of the same law firm(s.)
5. I have NOT made any application for a patent on the word, “Mxplxqwb”.

Pardon me if those outrageous assertions caused any confusion or alarm.

1 year 32 weeks ago Best Free Office Suite ricwag1142

I just noticed the SSuite Office and downloaded it - will review. My suite now (thanks to Gizmo's) is Softmaker Office. Softmaker (free) may not include every possible option but, now that I've retired, I don't need every option.

My sense of what Softmaker offers is that the program(s) have everything I need for the time being. The main point for me is that everything loads quickly and has the smallest memory footprint of all applications listed. I have an older system and am limited as far as funds. While I hope to expand memory soon, I don't have much to spend on it now. Softmaker products use 1/3 or so memory of all other products I've evaluated and that is not only a plus for me but, at this point, a necessity. If you need that extra memory and don't need absolutely every option, I suggest Softmaker.

I'll look at SSuite Office and post back. As far as "cloud" goes, I suppose I'm just too old and set on certain things. I love the idea of online storage but I want my documents written on and stored on my hard drive. I have no doubt that this is now going in another direction. I may do likewise soon but, for now, I love everything that m22rdy has reviewed and, for my system, lean toward Softmaker.

This is the review of IMGV, one of the free programs suggested by readers here. In this case it was Anupam who put it forward after seeing the promising features described on its website. It's difficult for me to comment on this app because I can see the big effort that has been put into it, but unfortunately the result is disappointing.

First of all, it isn't user-friendly and switching folders is complicated; sooner or later you must use the keyboard and write the letter of the drive where they're located to reach the ones you want, like in the old days of MS DOS. There's a lack of elements such as arrow icons or mouse commands which would greatly improve browsing ease and speed. Mouse operation is confusing because you have to click and then right-click if you want some usual operations to be performed. You can specify the initial folder but just by writing its name to the corresponding option. Zooming is slow and you can't use the mouse wheel for that, just the + and - keys. It takes a long time to load the subfolders and if you have large drives with lots of them, it frequently crashes after a while. New users will need an extra effort to get used to this program because of the uncommon ways to handle normal functions.

So, I'm afraid I can't recommend IMGV in spite of some other good features it offers. Thanks anyway, Anupam.

"wonderful free content." What drugs are you on?
We have to pay an outrageous ISP fee every month to access the internet with its content.
That makes the content "not free". People who cannot pay the fee are unable to access said content. So it's not free if you have to pay to see it.
That's why I oppose the ads. If you want to place the ads then make the access free.
It's the same principle with cable tv. I refuse to pay for the privilege of watching ads.

You can get broadband internet access for as little as $14.99, that does not seem outrageous to me considering how useful it is. This monthly fee does not go to content creators like the site you are posting on right now, they do this all for free and survive off of advertising or donations. Wikipedia is one of the most used sites and relies solely on donations to cover their overhead and pay their staff. It's annoying when people who have clearly never owned their own business or run a non-profit complain about the economics of running one.

The editor of this category will of course make his own decisions about which products to include. It is unlikely however you will see Comodo featured until they begin to participate in more independent testing. I understand the failings of such testing (as stated by Comodo) and in the most part I agree, but even so our readers want a selection of resources to compare products with. Therefore, until we see Comodo featured on AV Comparatives, VB RAP and AV-Test.org etc., these conditions are not met. MC - Site Manager.

PORTABLE'ness should always rate a mention, as some of us love portable.
(PS when I say 'Portable' I mean I create a folder wherever I choose, and I place the EXE into it, and it just runs from there, keeping everything it needs in that folder.)

I am not sure if Keynote NF is the same as your top recommendation ? (I believe it is the successor of Keynote ?).
It can be used as a portable program.

I agree that TreeDBNotes is much prettier, and you can also create a Portable version.
There is an option in the Tools menu 'Copy the program onto a Flash drive'
It will copy everything it needs into your chosen folder (even on your C drive).
You might care to install it on your spare PC, and use the option I just described. Then copy that folder into your main PC.
If you don't have a spare PC, then you can do it all on one PC. (I did, to see what happens.) What happens is there may be slight cross talk on the location of some files (it is not too bad, as I have seen much worse with other programs.)
The cause of that slight problem is they appear to be using the Registry for some settings, instead of confining them to an INI file in the same folder.

I don't understand why people don't like targeted advertising as compared to untargeted. The way I look at it is, if I'm going to have the ads anyway, why not have them be for something I'm more likely to be interested in? What am I missing?

Of course, we'd all rather have no ads at all. But I feel like I think Rob does. A lot of these sites depend on ad revenue for their livelihood. So long as the ads aren't overly intrusive, I'm content to pay for my access by having the ads. Those who try to block all ads from sites they visit are freeloading.

Agreed. A business model like this is unsustainable. They will either go bust like so many others before them or become no more competitive than the already established services. IMO I would not trust this as my only solution at this time. MC - Site Manager.

May I suggest http://www.feedingthefear.com as a free horror story site? It is only small at the moment, but it is growing.

Great list by the way, I'm always on the look out for new sites to visit :)

Cheers, Steve

Thanks for that. I can always use a new site and that one looks good from the bit I read.

I have bookmarked it and will add in on next update.

Steve

Edit: The site was added in, but now is dead and has been removed in the April, 2013 update.

It is even worse (or better). They are giving away unlimited storage for a year with the option to purchase 3 years of unlimited storage for $19.99@year.
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/surdoc-giving-away-free-unlimite...

I would not trust a 1 year old company with a deal that sweet. Too many of these storage sites have gone away.

Though I have had 2 free 50GB ADrive accounts for over 5 years.

Google should hire a decent Analyst, and his first 'project' should be to design an advanced Search screen (web page) that nearly anyone could use to search for what they want.
And Google needs an advanced search page that works, as the normal search is becoming atrocious.

PS There is a slight chance that I know what I am talking about.
I was a qualified Chartered Accountant and Auditor for 23 years, then I moved into IT, and was a Business/Systems Analayst for 20 years, in Banks and a large Telecommunications company (and never had a failed project).

As someone who runs websites I have say, this is the problem with a lot of people these days. They pay for Internet and belive everything else should be free? Ad free as well?!?

Why would anyone EXCEPT the ISP's put up a website if that's the case?

If a person buys a car do they get free gas? Do they even get an 'ad free' experience as they are pumping the gas? No.
Do they get free roads? No. Those are paid for with taxes. So are those roads ad free? No. You can't even get your car repaired without being blasted by advertising for other products.

The fact that you pay the ISP a lot of money doesn't mean that is trickling down to the people creating the actual content. It's not. In the vast majority of the cases (if not all), it doesn't.

Try paying for a server if you think your ISP is charging you a lot. Then add the ISP charges on top of that. It's a boat load of money, believe me. Ask Gizmo.

Now if you're paying your ISP, or "X" website and THEY are serving you ads? Complain away. I'm with you 100%. Hulu Plus is a great example of this kind of thing. ;)

Great help with setting up my system, thanks. I'm having trouble with keyboard shortcuts only working intermittently. Can I simply delete the /usr/share/applications/keyboard-settings.desktop file to get back the default keyboard settings and see if that fixes the issue?

Also, the login sounds seem to be tied to MDM, so any users planning to install and use LightDM don't need to worry about changing those settings.

SKYDRIVE is worst site by far. check the Fine Print my friends. Microsoft sifts through your files and even minor semblances of affection have been getting people banned from their Microsoft accounts. That means nothing explicit, also will ban you if you store any illegally attained downloads. so be warned..

tcplay is a free, pretty much fully featured (including multiple keyfiles, cipher cascades, etc.) and stable TrueCrypt implementation.

This implementation supports mapping (opening) both system and normal TrueCrypt volumes, as well as opening hidden volumes and opening an outer volume while protecting a hidden volume. There is also support to create volumes, including hidden volumes, etc.:

Waterfox: 64-bit only. Some releases are fast, some builds are slow - if you can jump through the hoops that sometimes appear to get it working in the first place.

Pale Moon (http://www.palemoon.org/): built for usability, stability and security rather than speed and fluff, though many releases have been faster than Waterfox. 32 and 64-bit versions, including portable; solid and user-friendly. Currently at version 15.3.2 - this does include backported security patches from later Firefox versions, as well as bugfixes and improvements.

I thought the previous course was pretty lame, I'm not sure I learned anything I didn't already know.

The certificate sucked too. Looked like a kid designed it in 3 minutes. Didn't even have my name on it :(

I'd never been given a certificate before. It was a very underwhelming experience. My IQ test certificate was cool though, and it had my name on it :)
I like that one. Its my favourite. Of 2.
