1 year 42 weeks ago How to Find Out What is Causing Problems on Your Windows 7 PC NoMonkeyNo100

Great tip Vic.
Using the reliability tool on a Win7 64bit system, I quickly tracked down a recurring problem to its source -a missing dll. Quick out to the net, rounded up the newest version of the missing dll, installed, and Voila! Problem solved.
Things are so easy when you do them right! Accurate info, follow instructions, and things go well. Thanks.

The windows search bar works if one has indexing turned on. Personally, I hate all the disk thrasing and slowdowns that come from indexing all my drives. If the indexing has been turned off for some reason, consciously or accidently, your searches will be haphazard at best.

There are a number of alternate well behaved indexing programs out there, but no matter what indexing sometimes can be more of a bother than a help.

First off, huge fan of this site, long time reader, 1st time commenting.

I am like many of you still stuck on WinXP for reasons of finances +hardware support issues.

I have tried and used many different firewall's, over the years, and recently been using CheckPoint's Free AntiVirus + Firewall Product.

The interface is well designed, reasonably easy to use, and to figure out, except I can't figure out how to turn on the "learning mode". Although I am knowledgeable enough to manually setup permissions for different applications, services etc.

My current main complaint is the high memory or cpu usage that vsmon.exe has, and maintains, using around 244 to 250 mbs of ram according to the Task Manager. Which has started to affect the usability of other applications.

My 2nd complaint is that the installer doesn't add a tray icon, for immediate access, had to run that manually, then make the setting to run at windows startup.

I am not saying that ZoneAlarm is a bad product, just not a good fit for older hardware perhaps or perhap's it's a WinXP issue. And maybe it's just not practical to create new software for older OS's or hardware, and I can understand that.

Also, I picked this combo package, because I had read somewhere that MSE is not as accurate in it's heuristics anymore, so therefore a stronger antivirus software selection was mandated.

I tend to pick software, that allows command-line options, so that I can create batch files, to run as scheduled tasks, to keep my pc maintained and secure, without having to manually go do updates and scans.

In that case, can anyone recommend, a good free firewall, that is lightweight but tough security? Thank you kindly.

The single biggest advantage to SoftMaker's Office Suite: it provides for the icons in the various toolbars to be increased to a large size.

For those of us with visual impairments that is a huge factor, and no other office suite allows for that type of modification to the user interface.

1 year 41 weeks ago Best Free Audio-Video Format Conversion Program Epsilon

From what I've been reading elsewhere online, "variable bit rate" (VBR) is preferred to "constant bit rate" (CBR) for audio conversion to MP3 file. I've downloaded a few converters including Pazera and Freemake but they don't seem to offer VBR. I'm now downloading Format Factory to see if it has VBR as an option.

I would have thought it would be mentioned in the review whether or not VBR is an option.

Cheers,

PS. I found a program on Softpedia called "Weeny Free Audio Converter" which mentions VBR but, during installation, Malwarebytes blocked an attempt to open a suspicius website. Also, the installer started to download an Install Manager, so I cancelled out of that and regard "Weeny..." as a program to be avoided.

view
1 year 41 weeks ago Best Free Audio-Video Format Conversion Program MidnightCowboy

Thanks for the heads up regarding Weeny Free Audio Converter. Amongst other things, the program installs Babylon so yes, definitely to be avoided.

In general, anything to do with media converters, players or YouTube is 95% likely to be bundled with something users will wish to avoid.

The free version of WinPatrol is a great app for avoiding these, even if you miss the options to do so (if present) during the install process. Another is ToolWiz Time Freeze which offers the chance to try out new software without it actually installing or affecting your system. MC - Site Manager.

Also, VBR vs CBR is an often debated topic. Search for VBR vs CBR on Google, and you will find some links to read about this.

UltraDefrag doesn't say it will work on Windows 8 but I tried the portable version and it works quite well on Win8. The help says the optimizer part of the program put the most used files at the beginning of the disc and it seems to make my computer run faster. It did take a couple of hours to run although the disc had never been defragged before and was severely fragmented.

Thanks for the review,

Your review is one, if not THE best, of all of the many backup reviews I've ever read in internet. Congratulations. I have a question concerning parcial backup: I installed a lot of programs listed in this review and tested them. But when I deleted a file in the original source, the parcial backups (ie.: incremental or differencial) didn't recognized that. That is, they only ADD files to the partial backups, but do not mirror/equalize them (do not delete in the backup the deleted file in the source). The only exception for that was Toucan, but Toucan didn't work in my computer (crashed all times). Is there another one that does that? Thank you.

I cannot believe that people fool around with incremental backups.
If your data is important enough to backup, then -
- Don't save money, or space, by doing incremental backups
- Keep your backups as simple as is humanly possible

Actually, I'm converting some wav files that I created when capturing the audio from some old record albums. And I see what you mean about 'often debated topic'. Never-ending by the looks of it.

I've managed to use Foobar2000 to convert to vbr and Format Factory to cbr. At around 250 KB/s bitrate there was only a 5 Mb difference in size but I'm guessing the vbr might be better quality. Though I doubt I can tell the difference even it they were around 192 KB/s.

I copied both to a USB stick and tested it in my micro hi-fi and both worked fine.

Thanks.

1 year 41 weeks ago Best Free Audio-Video Format Conversion Program Anupam

Oh OK, you were trying to convert wav files. Yep, then vbr and cbr will come into play.

Well, at 192kb/s you might see the difference, but I think at 320kb/s, the difference might be less.

From what I have read and understood about vbr vs cbr... for voice only audio, 128kb/s will work fine. With music having loads of different things, and various stuff, cbr at 320kb/s will give good quality, if you want to go for cbr. Whereas if you want to go for vbr, then make the range 0-320 kb/s, and keep quality high or close to high.

I used "xplorer2 lite" for a long time which you consider to be the best. Unfortunately, the freeware version has no file search ability which is something I would think everyone would want, at I do. You posted an article in Sept 2011 that "Multi Commander" used to cost $30 and is now free. Given that it appears that this topic hasn't been updated in quite a while and you do have it listed as something you plan to review, I decided to try "Multi Commander". I have found that it does have a file search tool. It has both 32 and 64 bit versions, as well as, a portable version (which I prefer to use). My initial impression is that it is better than "xplorer2 lite".

Am the new editor here and this article is pending a major update.

Yes, MultiCommander is better than xplorer2lite, but it's not true that xplorer2lite doesn't have file search ability. It does have [not built-in], but the lite version uses windows search command for searching files. The Pro version has a superior search tool that locates files scanning properties like comments, music and picture data etc. So this is certainly a limitation.

Rob, great job on a follow-up article and listening to your readers!

You say in your article "And because both programs can import and export standard MIDI files, switching between programs will be easy." That is true. However, you need to mention that both programs can import/export to MusicXML, which is a far better way to transfer music files. If we were talking purely about sequencing software, then MIDI would be fine. But we are talking about *notation* software, which has different demands for which MusicXML is superior in quality than MIDI.

I do not use MuseScore and the only reason is because I own Finale and have been using it for a long time and will not switch to another piece of software. But that's the only reason. If I did not want to spend hundreds of dollars on Finale or Sibelius, MuseScore looks like the software to use!

Sorry, It seems to be a problem with Firefox using Sandboxie. No search works. You got me why.

Probably because a secondary service needs to launch to enable the search and Sandboxie is preventing this. I'm not a Sandboxie user but plenty here are. If you post this here in our forum, I'm sure one of the regulars will be able to advise how to fix it. MC - Site Manager.

We try our best to inform the users of toolbars, or any other bundled extras with the programs. But, because of the way things change, or, when a category has not been taken by an editor, or taken up recently, and the new editor has not yet reviewed the software(like with this one), then the reviews might not be up to date. So, users have to use their own discretion too, and have to be careful while performing installations on their systems. Our reviews are just a guide, the main decision making has to be done by the users themselves.

"... BusyBox combines tiny versions of many common UNIX utilities into a single small executable. It provides replacements for most of the utilities you usually find in GNU fileutils, shellutils, etc. The utilities in BusyBox generally have fewer options than their full-featured GNU cousins; however, the options that are included provide the expected functionality and behave very much like their GNU counterparts. BusyBox provides a fairly complete environment for any small or embedded system ...":

1 year 41 weeks ago Really Easy Way to Find Out What Cookies Any Site Uses Without Going There vanilla12

@palmierj, re: scan my cookies

Once upon a time there was "IEcookiesview" - for IE.

For Mozilla you might want to try this:

Left click on the small icon to the left of the URL in the address field (it's a button).
Click "More info", and click the "Security" tab.
If you then click "View cookies", the current site's cookies are shown, (and can easily be removed, if you want).
If you click on the "X" in the search field at the top, all your cookies will be shown (same as in Tools | Options | Privacy | Show Cookies).

If you switch from the "Security" tab to "Permissions" you can fine tune cookie permissions on a per site (page) basis, if you want.

I used to put Comodo on every PC I have ever used. Sadly the last time I was helping out a friend I realized that now comodo adds in a bunch of different software and it doesn't give you the options to not install it. You can still delete Geekbuddy and Dragon after the fact because the standalone firewall has no dependencies. I will never use their software again and I highly encourage people to do the same. Even the standalone firewall has no access to all the basic functions an IT professional would need. If you want a piece of software that you have no idea what its doing then this is the firewall for you. I'm still searching for something new but in the mean time I'd rather go unprotected than having this crap running on my PC.

1 year 41 weeks ago Best Free File or Disk Catalog Organizer profondorosso75

Hi all, I'm looking for catalog software to catalog all my hard drives and flash drives but I would like it to be integrated into explorer. so when I open explorer or my computer I want to see all my drives, even the ones that I don't have attached and have the ability to search or browse them. Alternatively I would use a stand alone program for this if it had a built in file manager utility so I could also manage/copy/move/delete/new folder etc. my online drives. It is not clearly stated if any here do that. anyone have any suggestions for what I'm looking for? if it doesn't exist, why doesn't someone much smarter than me create it? Thanks.

Dia is a Linux program that was ported to Windows.

Unfortunately, it doesn't import Visio files. But LibreOffice does. So when I open up some of my old Visio files, I use LO, then if they need some heavy tweaking, I use Dia.
