Oops, there's a nasty memory leak in this program. After 4 hours, +/- 4 GB memory consumed. Seems like every snowflake is remebered. If you kill the process, then the memory is released.

BGInfo is a great way to have information visible on the Windows desktop, is very customisable, and even better, its "portable"

I can change the text size, font, colour, and choose any or all of the Windows system information options

And as Rob suggests, I can remove ALL the computer information and just have other information, such as a to do list for the day, or a list of quotations, or anything I like !

However, readers would appreciate knowing that this program makes changes to the registry, and that once you use this program, it is not immediately obvious how to "uninstall the program"

After reading BGInfo's homepage and the homepage's recommended reading site, I was still unsure how to uninstall this program

Thankfully, I found the answer in the Help section of the program:
"BGInfo does not require any special installation. To run it simply execute BGINFO.EXE from a convenient location.
To uninstall, delete BGINFO.EXE and reset your system's wallpaper using Windows' Desktop Properties dialog"

Something also not clear - how can we get BGInfo to "display the contents of a text file". Sounds very useful, for example to display a regularly updated text file of events for the current calendar month. The instructions were not simply explained

Thanks Rob for yet another marvellous Hot Find, you are amazing, and a much valued asset to the TechSupportAlert website

I rate BGInfo a 10/10 for being portable, and so very customisable !

And correct me if I'm wrong, but BgInfo uses NO system resources ! So I rate it a 10+/10 !

Using BGInfo and another freeware program "Photo On Desktop-7", which allows me the very basic but essential task of floating any chosen image on my computer screen (eg a to do list, or a loved ones photo), and my daily organisation skills are enhanced greatly !

I have no affiliation with either program

Just what I've always wanted from the Easter Bunny, and early, too! I've been poking around in my registry ever since I found it. (I know, if it ain't broke, don't fix it - but tell that to the gamers that tweak their computers until the MoBos melt). I keep finding left-overs from app I've tried, didn't like and uninstalled that left garbage here and about. Regedit works but it is rather tedious.

I don't think you ought to recommend this site for children. I clicked the link which took me to lobby and there was the F word all over the place. Some of it just cursing some of it about what some of the people wanted to do to two sisters... Childish yes, suitable for children no.

I want to share an external hard drive that contains my Vuze downloads between 2 Mac computers. I created the files on the external on one computer but the other computer Vuze copy can see the downloads even though I've input the right volumes. Is there a trick?

view
Additional Vuze Settings 2 years 3 days ago mr6n8 I assume you mean "the other computer Vuze copy" can't "see the downloads" I also assume the external is connected to the computer in question. Since you have already added the torrent to that Vuze, you can try the context menu entry for the torrent (a right-click in Windows - not sure in Mac) Advanced>Files>Move Data Files and choose the directory containing the content. If that does not work, then remove the torrent from that Vuze and see below. If it is completed, then you need to be in Mode of intermediate or advanced http://wiki.vuze.com/w/UG_Options#Mode_options Add the torrent to Vuze using File>Open>Torrent File (Ctrl+O) http://wiki.vuze.com/w/UG_Menus#File_Menu This presents you with an Add Torrent screen where you can choose the save directory. You will need to set the "Add Mode" to "Seeding" (Only visible in intermediate or advanced mode) http://wiki.vuze.com/w/Seed_an_existing_file If you choose the directory containing the content, Vuze should recognize it and adjust the %. There are some issues with Mac on resuming a partially completed torrent that might change this procedure a little even on a completed download. http://wiki.vuze.com/w/How_do_you_resume#Mac_OS_X BTW I am on the road and on a WiFi right now and may not be able to get back quickly if you have more Qs. Steve view
Additional Vuze Settings 2 years 1 day ago jcar

I'm still confused by all the options to choose from.

Usually on a Mac, you tell it where the directory is and it always remembers. In this case there are 3 different places where I can tell it where the Vuze/downloads directory on the external HD is, I delete the original Vuze/downloads directory from the user/library (created when I downloaded Vuze to the 2nd computer) and when I restart Vuze on the 2nd computer, it recreates the deleted directory and replaces all the parameters I changed back to the original directory location.

When I changed the directory location on computer 1 to the external HD, there was no problem. The downloaded movies appeared in the library.

No so with computer 2 using the same external HD...

I am troubled that the articles pro and against IP filtering are SEVEN YEARS OLD! I really would hope there would be something much more current on the subject. I personally use IP filters because, hey--how could it hurt NOT TO?
I also use an anonymous proxy (usually out of China or Russia) in my P2P client and I verify it with a torrent IP checker (IPmagnet).
I have never in six years of downloading torrents, received one of those letters from my ISP.

Almost A Full Email App In Your System Tray 1 year 4 months ago dalchina

Poppeeper is free, no account limit I know of.
If no emails are present, it can scan, say, 8 email accounts on different servers in a second or less.

You can choose to view headers only, download emails, etc.

You can delete mails from the servers (viewed or unviewed).

Using e.g. Spampal and a bayesian filtering plugin you can have your mail checked for Spam.

You can choose the periodicity of mail scans, and various notification forms and displays are supported.

It integrates with your email client in that you can quickly use that to reply to an email viewed in Poppeeper. You can even use Poppeeper to send email.

Emails from different accounts can be viewed in different colours, together or by individual accounts.

view
Almost A Full Email App In Your System Tray 1 year 4 months ago bernardz Two accounts is ridiculous, most of us. here would have a few email accounts; I have 4, one for work, one personal and two older ones and I do not think I have that many. How say you have one gmail and use the calendar, you have used the two allowed in Gmail Notifier. Then if you add facebook you are over the limit. Having said that Gmail Notifier unlike poppeeper can handle facebook and google calendar so they are not exactly the same product. Note there are some products that are like poppeeper, I hope the editor of that section looks into it. view
Almost A Full Email App In Your System Tray 1 year 4 months ago rob.schifreen Hi Bernard, 1. I think it goes without saying that we all have more than 2 email accounts. But that doesn't mean we all need to check all of our accounts in the same way. For example, I use Outlook and Exchange where I work at a university, and I have no wish to access that account via the web at home. 2. For all those who replied to my story about Gmail Notifier Pro with "I've been using Poppeeper for years and it's so much better", WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THIS BEFORE! As I say frequently, if you're using a freeware program that you really like, please let me know so that I can tell everyone else. Just drop an email to tsa [ at ] schifreen.co.uk with the name of the program (that's all you need), and I'll do all the rest of the work. Robert view

I don't know- for someone relatively non-technical I have found the free version of Incredimail seems to do all of the thing listed with Gmail Pro. Am I missing something?

view
Almost A Full Email App In Your System Tray 1 year 4 months ago bernardz Most people here as a minimum would have a gmail email account, use its calendar linked into their android phone and Facebook. That is three accounts. Most would need more. Furthermore, just because they have an email account that they do not use much does not mean if it gets an email, they do not want to know about it. Two accounts will not cut it. What they could do is use Gmail Notifier Pro for Facebook and the calendar and use Poppeeper for their email accounts. There are also some utilities in firefox that can do this too. It needs an editor to go over it. view

Thanks rob.... another nice find from you.

I've installed it just a few hours ago and it's working fine on my gmail account.
Because I'm old and not too clever, I'm not to sure if I can get it to work with my other email address that I use on Thunderbird.

Is this possible and if so, how do I do it ?

cheers

I just want to add something to your 2. statement:

This is just as is meant to be! Don't change anything, as you (and some other writers) are doing wonderful job.

Poppeeper is listed on the appropriate page (and it's not the pick!, but this is not the point.

Comment on this site are just as important as articles.
Even in the days of Gizmo himself I didn't agree with all of his picks. Nowadays, when so many different authors are contributing their precious time and knowledge, it's impossible to agree with most of the picks.

So most of us probably just try best one out and listen to suggestions in comments. Works for me :-)

Checked out the site literally as you suggested - Nigeria. The "information" about Nigeria was shallow, full of cliches and glib statements "...Nigeria is home to a substantial network of organized crime, active especially in drug trafficking..." - first entry. Compare with Wikipedia that starts out "...Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a federal constitutional republic comprising 36 states and its Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The country is located in West Africa and shares land borders with the Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, and Niger in the north...". There is more to Nigeria than some purported 'substantial network of organized crime', just there is more to the USA than its well-known network of organized crime.

It's a sure bet I won't be going there again, and yes, I am a Nigerian.

Its really quite easy Ray if you just remember to localise your search by (most important) date to avoid irrelevant pages submitted long ago (most of the web) and to remember to use '+' '-' quote marks etc. Its all very logical. I often use the images section straight off....drag an image into the search box and be amazed. The recommended site, whatever its called(?) when asked "best widescreen tv 2013" earlier, the top article offered was written in 2007! By using the google tools provided at the top of the search page, I can home in on blogs, news, reviews, discussions, best prices, restrict dates, all within a fraction of a second. It fine tunes rather than spins off at tangents.

I'm not a google fan boy, far from it. but its hard to see how the featured site could cause anything but misinformation and frustration. You only get from the web a proportional response to the information you submit

IMHO

:)

Friend suggested I was over stating my question. Thanks for the tip, I'll try some more. Ray
