YouCam 5 for Free: CyberLink in association with Gizmo's Freeware 1 month 2 weeks ago George.J Are you sure you downloaded the product from the promotional link that I've given in the article. After you input your name and e-mail id, you will get the download link in your mail id. I tried installing Zemana AntiLogger Free, it gave me no alerts during install. Are you using the Free version or Pro version? Moreover the downloaded file appears as YouCam_5.0.4628a.0_HW_STD_DE_Standard_YUC141222-05.exe and not as Setup.exe as shown in your screenshots. About your screenshots 4. It's the error message you got after blocking the requests 3. wingdi.dll means Windows Graphics Device Interface. YouCam is supposed to interact with it because it's supposed to interact with your webcam and show the output on the screen. Here's info about it 2. YouCamservice.exe is the Cyberlink service and it's a signed (verified) digital application. It's a webcam logger, because it's supposed to interact with it 1. Zemana is not just a keylogger app but a screen-logger, webcam-logger and clipboard-logger. If any app is trying to use any of these logging services it will alert the user. Since Youcam is supposed to work with your webcam, it displays that alert. Most of all during these kind of alerts, as you can see in your screenshots you can see this message, "Do not click Allow unless this is a legitimate application". And yes as you can see just below that, its a verified application from Cyberlink, so you are perfectly safe to execute the installer. These kind of problems arise when you set heuristic levels to high. view

@ Gibbs.Slap,
Sorry about the delay. I installed to a sandbox and then remembered I had excluded the sandbox in Avira (while trying to validate a comment that a certain germ was able to escape sandboxes) and when trying to scan the sandbox manually, noticed the Avira context menu scan item was missing. After jumping through hoops trying to make it re-appear, I installed the newest (offline) version and now, since they've changed something, myself and others now have Avira telling us that Windows F/W is not activated (it nor the Win. Sec. Center has ever been) along with some other weird stuff. The context menu scan item is back so after I get Zamana I'll try again. So i positively understand, you got the (posted below) results how?
(you at first say "their download location" then you say "their install location" my apologies if I'm missing it, which I must be. ha.

Controversial Advertising Program Now Being Embedded in More Software 1 month 2 weeks ago MidnightCowboy OpenCandy is far from harmless and anything that seeks to hide itself from view and trick users for financial gain has to be controversial, at least amongst honest folk. Users would never encounter some of the products "suggested" by OpenCandy normally, and in doing so open themselves to significant risk, as detailed in one of the comments below. Complaints about wrapped installers form by far the largest mailbox received at Gizmo's Freeware so unless someone wants to suggest our readers are in some way deficient, then I maintain OpenCandy is a problem and we will do all we can to warn folks about it. Controversial Advertising Program Now Being Embedded in More Software 1 month 2 weeks ago SwanKnight

Personally, I never had any issues with OpenCandy nor have I ever considered it "controversial" to begin with. On the contrary, I have discovered some useful applications through it on more than one occasion.

OpenCandy is legitimate way for developers to earn a little money from the applications that they distribute for free. It's perfectly harmless and all its offerings are always optional.

If you have a problem with OpenCandy, then you're free to look for an alternative. But demonizing it doesn't help anyone.

Adware is not perfect but it's not necessarily evil either.

PS: I'm not affiliated with OpenCandy in any way.

Best Free Tune-up Program For Computer 1 month 2 weeks ago MidnightCowboy This comment from the interesting article linked below sums up Softpedia's approach to what they host and may help to overcome the confusion. "@geek — Download portals like Softpedia & MajorGeeks do not bundle 3rd-party installers with their own in-house wrappers or offers. You have overlooked the sad reality that some freeware installers are bundled with crapware by their own developers. Or are you expecting Softpedia & MajorGeeks to unbundle such installers as an extra service ? sunglasses Using the article's example of the Unlocker 1.9.2 installer downloaded from Softpedia, the reason why this installer offered Delta Toolbar is because Unlocker's developer himself had bundled the installer with Delta Toolbar. You get the same Delta Toolbar offer alongside Unlocker 1.9.2 even when you download the installer from the official Unlocker site (ie. the developer's Empty Loop website). The only way to avoid this is to choose the portable version which is v 1.9.0. (Accordingly, Unlocker 1.9.0 Portable is also available at Softpedia, w/o any extra wrapper of course.) Unfortunately, not all freeware developers offer crapware-free portable/ non-installer versions, even if users are willing to settle for older versions that might be more buggy & more insecure. Note: A recent UI change saw Softpedia downplaying its advisory about crapware-bundled 3rd-party installers. The advisory is now relegated to a brief mention at the sidebar, eg. "What's new in Unlocker 1.9.2 [...] Promotional feature: Fully optional Delta toolbar". Personally, I prefer Softpedia's previously detailed & explicit advisory about "ad-supported installation", even if it comes at the end of the software's article". https://discuss.howtogeek.com/t/yes-every-freeware-download-site-is-serv... Best Free Tune-up Program For Computer 1 month 2 weeks ago BobC

Yes, it was Softpedia. Not every S/W they make available contains crapware. Also, I did not mean to imply that Softpedia actually inserts the crapware in those offerings that contain it. However, you know a piece of S/W is xxMB and when you get a yyKB download "installer", you can bet it will typically load crapware, hi-jack your browser's home page, etc. Most will give you an option to skip it (too many only give you that option via the "Customize" route).

So when you down some S/W from Softpedia and its yyKB in size and then download the same S/W from a site like Majorgeeks or Filehippo, and its xxMB in size, yu know the smaller one is an installer for crapware.

Along this lines, I also have a beef with Flash Player. I use Firefox and whenever I get a Flash Player alert to download the newest update, you get a checkbox - already checked - to also install McAfee A/V. I do not care for it and do not find it as reliable as other A/V S/W. If you happen to install it, you need a special S/W package (MCPR - McAfee ESD) to uninstall it. BTW, they are not the only A/V S/W hat requires a special package to uninstall. Avast is another (see avastclear).

I understand that some outfits have a business model that depends on ads, installing other S/W (ala FP), etc. I have no problem with it as long as they are up front and open about it and not burying it to catch some unaware user - considering most home users are not that savvy - to them a PC is another home appliance - turn it on like a TV and go!

I didn't notice any keylogging information during the install.
I was informed however during the installation that I would have to install Windows Media Player.
I didn't want to install Windows Media Player or windows Media Feature Pack aka Windows6.3-KB2835517-x64.msu (85.0 MB download) but what's a boy to do when logitech can't provide a working driver for his webcam. Worked on Windows 7 and now doesn't on Windows 8.1 despite downloading their latest driver.
It will fire up the webcam OK but fails on recording a video countdown remains on a loop. I visited Logitech's help forum and at at least one other user had the same problem. That user went backwards and forwards downloading the latest driver then the last but one driver and then extra codecs (never a good sign from advice person - sort of like, have you plugged in your webcam? a question of tech desperation). Nothing worked. The brats need to rebuild their driver again.

So I am pleased by this free offer brought to us by George.J

Best Free File-Based Backup Program 1 month 2 weeks ago ole

Went back to Yadis and finally checked the error log. The warning that I was getting was due to a file associated with a new program that was looked at by Yadis when the program opened. Put the bad actor on the "include" filter list (had *.* on the list so do not know why this file is different) and all is well. Certainly dumb of me not to look at the error log when the warning started but it looks like all is well now and can recommend the program.

Best Free File-Based Backup Program 1 month 2 weeks ago DavidFB

Hi Ole
As noted in a followup, it turned out NET3.5 was only required for Cobain if you needed to use the Volume Shadow Copy. This isn't needed for routine file backup - just for system files.

I used File Hamster for years for versioning and back-up-on-save of key files and folders. While not presented as free, it does revert to Basic features after the trial and still works fine. However, when I upgraded to Win8, it wanted older .NET so I put it aside.

I've been experimenting with FreeFileSync which also now comes with RealtimeSync.

But yeah - when you get used to software you really like, it can be frustrating when its not maintained.

Sorry, I wouldn't know how to do either of your suggestions, I am curios for an answer though. I would like to know what you find out when using a sandbox.

I did however install it w/0 allowing the keyloggers but the program will not function w/o them installed.

It also wants to take "control" of your webcam which I did allow because of the nature of the program.

view
Best Free File-Based Backup Program 1 month 3 weeks ago ole

DavidFB, Cobain's need for NET3.5 is problematic for me as new/updated software that I use requires higher versions.

For a long time I used Yadis which was very reliable and backed up in real time with versioning. However, Yadis started throwing errors although the backups were still OK. So, then switched to AutoBak which also supports versioning in real time. It worked OK but recently interacted with hardware or software and crashed the computer. Checking the AutoVer forums, etc. I found that crashes have been an ongoing problem for at least a couple of years.

I like using real time backups but other than Yadis and AutoVer I don't know of any others. So based on this review I think I’ll give Yadis another shot to see if something on my computer might have changed and it works OK now. If not I'll work down through the recommended programs.

I like this type of program to do a quick surface scan test. They show if there are bad sectors developing on your drive. While its true you can fix these, it can take a very long (days) time to do so. And even then, your data may be unrecoverable.

So is it worth it to repair a drive, when you know that it is failing? Drives are cheap and so are imaging programs (Macrium Free).

When I see a drive failing, it gets replaced right away. Frequent disk imaging and a good backup program make swapping drives much easier.

Installation size is only 5MB. The developer has most basic requirements covered plus tag editing. The Smartlists are quite novel. The skins are minimalist. It has customised library views, a mini player and a popup window which can be customised for position and timing. Playlists are stored as Winyl databases. Prior to this I was using AIMP (portable version), but find this suits my more basic needs.

I do contribute to free software projects I use and like but even good projects are now often including the so-called "bundleware". This is unacceptable to me when the "bundleware" installation is obfuscated, less than obvious, difficult, or even hidden. It is especially disappointing when, after making a donation to a favorite project, the next update suddenly includes "crapware"! ugh

I am going to donate to DonationCoder.com because I think the funding model is a great idea (similar to HumbleIndieBundle) and I want to help keep it going.

I had high hopes for Light Alloy (not yet reviewed here) and thought it might replace PotPlayer when I first installed it; great default skin and interface; easy to configure, lots of options, etc...but when comparing an assortment of videos in both players, LA didn't render the videos as well as PotPlayer; they seemed a bit grainier and some appeared to have sharper outlines. Also, I didn't see any option to show thumbnails in the timeline (or navigation/progress bar as PP calls it), which PotPlayer can do, and which is a valuable feature for any video player. No reason to change my default player; PotPlayer has the most options available and still rules. Would love to see more elaborate skins made for it, like those for AIMP3, which is my default audio player (it doesn't play videos)...no media player has better skins than AIMP3. If I had more time, I'd learn how to make them myself.

Incidentally, I didn't think Media Player Classic Home Cinema rendered videos as well as the other top ones listed when I tried it out, but that could be relative to my hardware and configurations, as it did get (surprising to me) 5 stars here.

And...since Microsoft is killing off IE and replacing it with Spartan (most likely a Chrome clone)...isn't it time to put the nail in the coffin on the Windows Media Player? I feel sorry for all those that are still using it.

In addition, it can can retrieve practically any information about network computers via WMI, SNMP, HTTP, NetBios and a bunch of other features. It can also resolve host names and auto-detect the local and external IP address range. To assist with network administration, it supports remote shutdown and Wake-On-LAN. Best Free Reminder and To-do List for Android 1 month 3 weeks ago brainfart117

I have what one would call CRS (CAN'T REMEMBER SH#T :), I would like a reminder that is very basic, and most importantly would contain a transparent floating or scrolling reminder list for that day or hour which appears every time one uses their phone. None intrusive transparent reminder that you set for that day or time. Might be a stupid thought, yet it would be suffice for me. ??? Any thoughts people?

I do not see the Point of using this neat app seeing it fixes nothing. You still have to use a Utility to fix or by-pass bad sectors or Tracks. Windows has a decent one (Built on chkdsk c: /f /r). Is one long process and does not auto shutdown, but works fine and fixes bad sectors. I had a errors in my Bitmap and the Windows one fixed me up. But Thank you Gizmo for suggesting Major Geek for downloads, as it true CNet downloads is full of bundeled malware crap. I do not use CNet anymore due to this fact. I used Softpedia but my Antivirus on demand says it is registy malware and I manually remove it with regedit.

Best Free Non-Adobe PDF Reader 1 month 3 weeks ago MidnightCowboy Posted on behalf of member: sicknero. With Sumatra (portable) I get between 24 and 45 meg with a PDF open. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...-30_133128.jpg With Sumatra idle I get about 12 meg but it can drop to less than a meg if I run System Explorer's "Process Memory Usage Cleanup". Not normally something I'd bother with, I just tried it out of interest. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...-30_133421.jpg https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...-30_134340.jpg I haven't tested PDF XChange and it's years since I last used Foxit. view
Best Free Non-Adobe PDF Reader 1 month 3 weeks ago Remah That is very interesting. :) As I've only used PDF-XChange, I'm interested to get any insights you have that explain why the differences are so large? I expect that most of the differences are due to each application's feature-set (memory) and the support for PDF features (memory and disk). But the Foxit file size is still a magnitude different. Also, this 2013 dotTech review, Windows Best free PDF reader — Adobe Reader vs Foxit Reader vs PDF-XChange Viewer vs Nitro PDF Reader vs Sumatra PDF compares the same products but comes up with different memory usage - maybe they misplaced a decimal point when recording the Sumatra memory usage. What do you think? view

I opened the same PDF art book in Foxit, PDF-XChange Viewer, and Sumatra PDF. All are the portable editions and the latest version. Stats were as follows:

Memory
Foxit Reader 32,860 KB
PDF-XChange 19,436 KB
Sumatra 6,276 KB

Hard Drive Space
Foxit Reader 133.0 MB
PDF-XChange 20.0 MB
Sumatra 6.17 MB

I plan on deleting Foxit shortly. Its interface is more appealing, but it has become bloated in recent years and doesn't do anything out of the ordinary to justify the much larger footprint. PDF-XChange is my default reader and I use Sumatra for epub, mobi, and the occasional comic book download.

A New Free Windows Anti-Malware Suite 1 month 3 weeks ago Remah I had a look at the AV-Comparatives reports including the 2014 summary and Tencent performs well but I'd be wary of any antivirus that doesn't participate in the malware removal test. Neither Tencent, Qihoo or Baidu did but they ranked Qihoo ***, Tencent and Bauidu get * or ** in the real-world tests, which gives some idea of their relative performance. For they year past, 2014, AV-Comparatives considered BitDefender the winner (Kaspersky performed as well if not better but AV-Comparative share it around). This reflects well on Qihoo 360is which uses the same engine. view

Automatically Dim Your PC Screen In The Evening 1 month 3 weeks ago Remah If you haven't opted in then Firefox isn't doing it - I just used them as an example of being more open about what happens if you do. Your issue is much more likely to result from something less obvious, like Google. view
A New Free Windows Anti-Malware Suite 1 month 3 weeks ago Remah It's hard to know how good the antivirus is without trying it. But Tencent Holdings is in the top ten Internet companies and might still be bigger (by market capitalization) than FaceBook. They have many products and own some big software and sites like the largest online game, League of Legends. On the one hand, they've had a lot of success copying products and services that already exist. Yet they seem to have some positive features like a link on their website for reporting illegal behavior by their corporations. The Qihoo 360IS antivirus, based on the BitDefender engine, was also "a new and unknown "security" program based out of China". It has turned out to be a success and a good product. In China, the Chinese version has helped Qihoo to gain market share from Baidu and other large Chinese sites so those competitors are also producing anti-virus products. I'm not sure if that is why Tencent now have an English-language antivirus but they're likely to make a better job of it than the mediocre Baidu antivirus which also uses the Avira engine. view

Automatically Dim Your PC Screen In The Evening 1 month 3 weeks ago Remah There are options other than blaming your ISP. Most PCs are uniquely identified and their geographics locations are often very precisely identified from information gathered with or without your permission on the Internet. At the highest level, most IP addresses are allocated to organizations (ISPs and the like) so their country and maybe city or region/province are known. Accuracy increases further from more detailed location-aware services. You can even read about specific applications. Firefox web browser is upfront about this in their Firefox FAQ on the same topic. view

thank you!

no cam so using f-lux- wow what a difference.....what is freaking me out a bit though is that u go to the link and it knew my exact location down to the street where i am.....just can't figure how, no personal ID/ info on this machine.....all i can think is the ISP is somehow collaborating with them?

As mentioned in my other post ( see www.techsupportalert.com/content/reminder-if-you-use-windows-just-get-fl... ) when I tried F.lux I found it too reddish for me. I also wasn't happy that it didn't have a portable version. Well, I have been trying SunsetScreen for the past week and I like it. It gives me better control over the colors and there's a portable version that's stealth too. I have also been in contact with the developer and I find he's very responsive - another plus.

Now, I know some people aren't too fond of programs running all the time, but you can easily overcome that by creating a task in Task Scheduler. Configure the task to start SunsetScreen at, say, 35 mins before sunset everyday and you're good to go. You can even add the argument "/hidewindow" (without quotes) to make it start silently in the system tray. In fact, when I raised a query with the developer, it was he who told me about that argument/parameter.

Personally, I've even started to experiment with the "Day" color. If I manage to adjust the color such that it would reduce the daytime strain on my eyes then it would be doubly useful.

It's a keeper so far.

[Edit]
It looks like the developer has joined us.

Welcome Daniel errr... I mean twinbee. It's always nice to see a developer taking such a keen interest in his software. :-)

How can any freeware site recommend this website / program when it,
a) self-proclaims that it has a "100% Clean in Install" yet tests @ 1/57 in a basic scanner;
b) self proclaims that it is a "Trusted Company" with no documentation to back that claim up with; and,
c) has a website that is copyrighted 2013?

Not OK.

Did you have Flux open at the time? Make sure Flux is closed before testing. Was the flickering during the time it said "Transitioning to night" or "Transitioning to day" at the top right? If so, that may not be fixed then for you. If that happens again, please let me know, and then try changing the transition phase to 10 seconds, and see if the problem is lessened or gone.
