Not too sure if this is the right place to ask this question but here goes.

I recently downloaded the free version of "Malwarebytes Anti Exploit free" purely because of the good reputation of their free "Malwarebytes Anti Malware" which we are all familiar with.

This new offering, "Anti Exploit" is working as an add-on with my SRWare Iron (Chrome) and the only time I know that it's working is when I open my browser, a small window on the task bar tells me that it's operating.

Do any of you have experience with this ? .... and if so, can you tell me how it works ?

To me, it doesn't seem to be doing anything at all and I'm left wondering if it's smoke & mirrors.

Great Advice If You're Choosing Antivirus Software 4 weeks 27 min ago MidnightCowboy This is surely a joke. Norton is only a leading brand because it is promoted heavily to make money, but this doesn't make it a leading product. Norton was removed from the AV Comparatives tests because they refused to take part in the same tests as other vendors. Despite this, AV Comparatives did include them in the next round of tests and surprise, surprise they came last! You can download the test results as a PDF file from AVC if you Google for it. Just goes to show that "we are the best and will protect you from everything" claims hold about as much water as a bucket full of holes. Free products such as Panda and Qihoo 360 will easily outperform this and many other paid products. MC - Site Manager. view

The malware included product is Free make video conversion. I found the other software but its misleading I will partially take that back. It says Review to see the others what??? It should say other products or something other than making the user think its a review of that software. It makes itsound like you are downloading or reviewing what is listed like WOT or Kasperaky TDS Killer.

Dearest Gizmo Team:

I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for the painful effort you went through to upgrade this website. If only you know how much benefit I have received due to the usage of this special site. This has been my lifelong walking "cane" as it were for few years, for Gizmo has helped me to find just what I needed online. I have been a "preacher" and "promoter" of Gizmo and many people have seen the benefit of exploring Gizmo site. Thank you for the heart work. I regularly visit your site every day. What happened to this site!? It doesn't offer anything like what it used to. Now it's a single app for a single category. The other problem? I downloaded a suggested app and it had malware in it! Gizmo, you really need to either rework your site to function like it previously did, and rectify the malware included suggested programs, or I'll go elsewhere for my quick finds of goods elsewhere. Seriously, the video conversion software FreeConverter included Adware! There's no other way to view other suggested software from the primary category links. The site looks terrible and isn't very functional anymore. Extremely disappointing =(

74 Free Photo Libraries Online 4 weeks 6 hours ago bernardz Thanks, I am a blogger and forever I need to grab some photos, so I will certainly give these shot. What I tend to do is google search for images -> then click search tools -> Usage rights ->labeled for reuse. Generally, I can get my photo there. If that fails, I go to the wiki but I will try these too now. One point is the legal status of most of the photos on the web is unclear, I have been assured that many photos on the net are not protected by copyright despite all the labels put on them. I suppose it depends how much you are willing to take a chance. view

I went through the whole list again (of the links I followed - maybe only 40 or so), so in trying to remember, this is a few of the troublesome ones I could recall:

* Penumbra - demo
* BASS (Beneath a Steel Sky) - the site has questionable security (per Firefox) and the download appears to be for the making of a game CD, so I didn't download it.
* Ben There, Dan That - same site problems as BASS and others there (gamershell.com) and it lists the download file as "BTDT_Demo.zip"
* Sudoku Cracker - Download link at site has this error: "Fatal error: Call to undefined function initdoc() in /home/webby476/public_html/subdomains/downloads/sudoku/download.php on line 4"
* Isanaki Sudoku - Following download link: "ERROR: 410 Gone" - BUT going to the home site and finding the download works.
* KSudoku - at Sourceforge. After a download, instructions say it wants you to run a "terminal" to compile the program. ???
* Fantasy Tennis - Link opens a page at aeriagames.com but no such game is found.
* LinCity-NG - "Server not found"

I can read the text. But, I can feel my eyes straining, just a little. Inspect Element says that the text is #555. That, along with a very thin font, is apparently just a little too light, for me.

And, as I'm typing this comment, the edit field text is, again making my eyes strain, a little. This font size is a little too small for comfort.

To keep the site running for freeware games also requires you to pay for hosting charges, freeware game developers tend to shut their sites down. But the download links will still be valid on other sites.

If you could point out which games have non-existant homesite it would be of great help. Also I dont think I've included any Demo games in the list. Could you tell me which one?

I appreciate all the work it takes to keep up something like this, so don't take this as a criticism. Over HALF the download links did not work for various reasons: Site or game download is non-existent; Game is a demo only; advertising site (not the game site), etc.

Hopefully you can find a good volunteer to manage this category. :)

Best Free BitTorrent Client 4 weeks 1 day ago SwanKnight

I've been trying qBitTorrent for a while now but I'm fed-up with its bugs.

If I try to add a torrent that I downloaded a part of previously, it doesn't automatically recheck, all it does is stay "Stalled" and manual/forced recheck does nothing, it just re-downloads everything again after the check is done.

Also, when trying to change the download folder for the torrent, it becomes utterly retarded. Sometimes it works, but often it downloads some of the content to the new folder and the rest in a folder with the original name, it's so frustrating.

The only feature I liked about was the "sequential download" option, it's very helpful when downloading series..etc

I'll probably go back to uTorrent 2.2 since I still can't find a decent replacement.

Deeper into the Windows Registry 1 month 2 days ago Remah

Thanks for the feedback - that is helpful to me.

Thanks also for pointing out errors and confusing bits. Most issues arise from the incomplete nature of the article and the need for further editing - it would be a beta version if it were a program. I wrote the first draft a couple of years ago and never found the time to finish it. So this time I quickly tidied up what was there and published it even though I know there's errors in it.

Just on your question about the use of the term "value", it is widely agreed that the terminology is confusing and the link from "registry terminology" takes you to a blog post (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/archive/2009/02/04/9394113.aspx) that explains why it is too difficult to fix. 32-bit and 64-bit explained 1 month 2 days ago Remah

Yes, it is hard to find an article that shows you how to find out what processor is installed when you don't have an operating system loaded to start the computer.

If you know the name of the processor (CPU) in your computer then you can find out if it is 64-bit by searching online. Most new CPUs are at least 64-bit.

Here is an example using an 8 year-old "Intel Core 2 Duo T7500". I've provided links to the relevant Wikipedia articles: Intel is the manufacturer and the article has links to each generation and brand of CPUs. Core 2 is the brand of processor. The article says "Core 2 is a brand encompassing a range of Intel's consumer 64-bit x86-64 single-, dual-, and quad-core microprocessors based on the Core microarchitecture." Duo means the CPU has two or dual cores. T7500 is the model or processor number. Intel has its own ARK search tool which provides this T7500 specification sheet where is says the "Instruction set" is 64-bit.

Other processors can also be found on Wikipedia or at the manufacturer's website: AMD processors at amd.com VIA processors at via.com

How Windows 64-bit Supports 32-bit Applications 1 month 2 days ago Remah

The 64-bit versions should run faster and use less memory because all 32-bit code will be emulated by WOW64 in 64-bit Windows. Further explanation follows.

If we compared 32-bit and 64-bit applications in their native environments then 32-bit application usually use less memory and run faster than the equivalent 64-bit application. But once both versions are running on 64-bit Windows it is not sufficient to simply compare the two applications. The 32-bit application requires WOW64 to run so that should be included in any performance comparison. That means you need to include all the duplicated resources used to map the 32-bit application to the 64-bit environment it runs under. Duplicated resources are used for memory mapping and redirection of files locations and registry entries. The result is that the 32-bit application uses more memory and runs slower too.

view
How Windows 64-bit Supports 32-bit Applications 1 month 2 days ago Remah

It sounds like you have a 16-bit installer or application. If that is correct then you can use any of the "Further options for running 32-bit applications with Windows 64-bit".

If it is only the 16-bit installer that is the problem, ie the game is completely 32-bit, then you might be able to circumvent the 16-bit installation. You would use software that monitors the game installation on an older version of Windows and then replicates that configuration on Windows 7. I have never tried this so I'm unsure how well this could work as it does have some significant risks. If you decide to try this then some of the products in the following articles will help: Best Free Software Update Monitor Best Free Program Uninstaller

Windows 7 Startup 1 month 2 days ago Remah

Thanks very much for picking up on my errors which are easy for me to miss. :)

I've started using HTML text diagrams to speed-up page load times by having a smaller overall size and fewer http calls with fewer images. I need to do this because my articles are much longer and more complex than most on this site. This article needs to be reduced in size, or split in two, before I can add more detail. HTML text diagrams do take much longer to plan and create but mean that I can amend them very quickly rather than having to modify a vector-graphic diagram, export it to a PNG file, and upload it to this site.

I would prefer to use vector-graphic diagrams but there is inconsistent support for this in web browsers particularly on mobile platforms.

Two web pages that are useful for HTML text are:

  • The World Wide Web (W3) Consortium HTML character entity reference which shows characters that all web browsers should display correctly.
  • HTML color references such as ComputerHope.Com's color reference list. I am considering changing the background for the infinity character.

It might be useful to indicate which processes run as long as Windows does but most of them are critical processes anyway. ... OK, I'll do it.

The diagnostic and troubleshooting icons are not visible unless you click on the "show more..." buttons to display the more detailed startup steps:

§  (white on purple) is used fourteen time mainly where I've included many of the boot trace variable names.

!  (black on yellow) is used seven times.

Δ  (white on blue) which indicates differences between Windows editions is used once in Table 8 - Local Security Authority SubSystem: LSASS.exe.

P.S. I haven't forgotten about your comment on the Deeper into the Registry article. I've been busy on these startup articles.

view
Windows 7 Startup 1 month 2 days ago Remah

I'm no expert on boot debugging for Windows but here's what I do know:

Third-party hardware debugging products for x86 and x64 computers install a separate board. These give you the earliest debugging control in the boot process.

See Microsoft's article on Windows debugging tools for an overview of debugging software. You can debug using software running on the same computer or on a different computer.

To start debugging from the boot loader you change the boot parameters as described in Tools for Changing Boot Options for Driver Testing and Debugging particularly changing the boot parameters and BCDEdit options You need to enable kernel-mode debugging if you want to see what is happening in the kernel-mode startup phase. I have been using Windows startup traces which do not provide sufficient kernel-mode detail.

You should have no problems starting wireshark and many other diagnostics while Windows debugging is operating.

Get $440 Worth Of Network Monitoring Software For Free 1 month 2 days ago Remah

Rob, I should have thanked you for recommending this free product. It is excellent and I plan to keep it running because it provides so much information that I can quickly access, even if I only need it infrequently.

PRTG will suit many of our readers because it is useful for home users and non-specialists even if they have very limited technical knowledge. It installs very easily without having to configure settings because you just answer some questions provided by PRTG's GURU: if you don't know the answer you can skip it. It also provides excellent in-line help for almost every task. The only obvious improvement would be a bit more hand-holding when it is first run to better explain the monitoring terminology to new non-technical users. PRTG also has key advanced features available in the free version:

  • multiple computers can act as probes (the computers that do the monitoring)
  • any of the probes can takeover monitoring in the event of the main probe failing
  • it doesn't require other specialized products, add-ons or servers, e.g. it doesn't need SQL Server running because it has its own proprietary database - apparently their format is better at handling the many small records.

Get $440 Worth Of Network Monitoring Software For Free 1 month 2 days ago Remah

I'm trying both at the moment and they are quite complementary as there is little overlap in functionality using the default configurations. In the main, this is because the scope of Glasswire is primarily my computer and what connects to it whereas PRTG's scope is my network anywhere.

Here's some more detail for those who are interested:

  • Glasswire is also more of an intrusion detection system for my PC. This is primarily achieved by monitoring changes to my firewall, connections, applications e.g. updates and version changes, and network-related Windows devices and configuration. Glasswire is so simple and well-designed that it is the first network monitoring program that I actually want to keep using all the time on my computer.
  • PRTG is primarily monitoring the connection to and availability of "my network". In the broader sense, "my network" is much more than my local network devices which includes my router, the DNS servers I use, and my network printers. It also monitors my external websites, external servers, and some common web services like Dropbox, Skype and Facebook.
  • Of course, like Glasswire, PRTG also has features that focus on my computer: the standard sensor is ping time from my computer to all other devices on "my network". PRTG's sensors include monitoring memory and disk utilization and security checks such as use of SSL and antivirus. For example, it picked up that Windows Defender is up-to-date but is not running as Avira is running instead. Each of my network printers uses about twelve sensors each by default so that would be 36 if I had all three turned on at the same time. So it will be easy for some techies to hit 100 sensors but the average user will have no such trouble.
  • PRTG lacks the simple interface of Glasswire but that is to be expected from a system that is aimed at network administrators and is scalable to large networks. It focuses on the needs of people who have to take care of networks with many users so it uses alerts and alarms delivered by email wherever the administrators are. That is overkill for me and most home users who generally only want alerts while we're actually at our computer.

PS. I should have added that the default install of PRTG uses quite a lot of bandwidth. Most of it is local for me but there is a lot that uses my Internet quota. Actually, it doesn't bother me because my ISP provides me with unlimited bandwidth. But if you have limited Internet bandwidth then PRTG can use several MBs a day depending on the number of devices you are monitoring and the types of sensors you are using. You can use Glasswire to monitor this situation. :D

Nice, clean site. Good use of white space. I always have to object to the use of gray fonts on white, though. Interactive design would have been much better for mobile devices/tablets, but it is more expensive, especially for a free site like this one. The site is usable on my Nexuis 5, but I have to expand and scroll sideways, less than optimal but OK.

Some may have noticed around the web the same sort of thing happening at a lot of websites. Google has changed the way their ranking system assigns rank to pages and/or websites. If the site does not offer or have the ability for phones, tablets and other little devices that people access the internet and the world wide web with their site could fall a considerable amount on the Almighty Gnoogle Search and Divulge your private info Engine ranking pyramid.(scam) Gizmo and his team have made it look almost seamless. Though, like a lot of sites, even money says behind the scenes somebody was pulling out what few strands they had left.
Nice job by Ian and his crew, FWIW.

Very nice thanks.
I sometimes think it would be useful if the search box offered a platform specific search option - just a thought.

Regarding Wi-Fi Finder. It was developed by a company who changed their name back in June 2014 and is strictly a marketing company. The app has not been updated for almost 2 years. It has some wifi hotspots but is missing several national chains here. Also there are some errors in the current database and no way of correcting the locations of the incorrect HotSpots

From the License Code.txt file in the download "Please note the license code should be activated before April.30, 2015. It doesn't support upgrade.". Guess that means the software will also no longer work if you format and reinstall Windows.

ImgBurn is now heavily bundled with other programs during the installation process. You must be very careful to chose custom installation in all screens and to then deselect the additional software installation attempts. Be very careful as the "express versus "custom" option will appear several times in an attempt to install the crapware.

Best Free Drive Cloning Software 1 month 4 days ago DavidFB

Windows Secrets has recently reviewed Imaging software and puts EaseUS Todo Backups (free) at the top, mentioning the only disadvantage is that it doesn't notify you if the backup drive is unplugged.

They also looked at AOMEI, noting it does notify you but doesn't purge old backups so will keep working until it fills your drive. And they mentioned Paragon.

The EaseUS web site now has a clear "Download Freeware" button. They then ask for your email address but allow you to uncheck being sent email. We'll see how polite they are about that.

Best Free PDF Writer Software 1 month 4 days ago bawldiggle

I am using both Bullzip and PDFCreator for testing.. They both return *identical* results of this Gizmos web-page.
None of the web-links in the authors introduction are recreated as links by Bullzip or PDFCreator -- but -- links in each "product" outline do translate into web links.

Bullzip is faster than PDFCreator -- I found the long lag after using PDFCreator confusing. It left me wondering if I had to find the PDF file in a folder or was I going to be offered the SaveAs dialog. Bullzip is the simplest process where as PDFCreator offers more "features" but they require PDFArchitect.

For several weeks I have been testing every virtual printer I can find.
Unfortunately none so far will print forms and they all "miss" some web-page components.
My solution so far is to use free DuckLinkCapture in Scrolling-Window mode but obviously the PNG result does not capture any web-links.

Hello everyone.
I am amazed with Bullzip !!! It worked fist time every time converting to PDF. I converted from NoteMaid and MS Word. Both converted to PDF and Adobe opened exactly as the instructions say.
FYI….I am just a typical guy with average computer know how. I am using the Bullzip to convert MS Word for my resume’ / job hunt applications. It works perfect exactly as you guys have stated. I appreciate very much this forum and will recommend Gizmo's to all my friends.
Also reading through this forum some have mentioned uninstall programs I never knew existed. Only uninstal Ive know are CCcleaner and the program that comes with Windows XP Much appreciated also is pointing out other download sites that cater to the companies that want "add on" included with "free" downloads. I will use Gismo's mow for all my download needs.
The dialogue you guys use is very understandable. For a person like myself without much computer savvy talk I understand most everything with a very few exceptions.
Thank you very much for a great website and forum

Best Free Online Applications and Services 1 month 4 days ago MikeR

Mammoth task, excellent reference resource. Due to the sheer size of it though there'll always be the odd problem with some services -- most notably in the field of song lyrics, where time and again the issue of copyright crops up.

I can't for the life of me see why I shouldn't be able to pick up on all the words of some of my favourite songs -- all the words, because very often the lyrics get lost. Major so-called "lyric finders" like LyricWikia, mentioned on here, repeatedly stumble in their searches, reporting that "unfortunately, we are not licensed to display the full lyrics for this song at the moment. Hopefully, we will be able to in the future. Until then. . . how about a random page?"

Er, well, thanks but no thanks. I'm looking to singalong to the The Last Resort by The Eagles, and very much doubt I'm going to be arrested as I drive along because my voice is in breach of copyright. LyricWikia's offer of "a random page" ain't exactly what I had in mind. Good thing, then, that azlyrics.com is still around.
