A New Free Windows Anti-Malware Suite 4 weeks 22 hours ago Remah It's hard to know how good the antivirus is without trying it. But Tencent Holdings is in the top ten Internet companies and might still be bigger (by market capitalization) than FaceBook. They have many products and own some big software and sites like the largest online game, League of Legends. On the one hand, they've had a lot of success copying products and services that already exist. Yet they seem to have some positive features like a link on their website for reporting illegal behavior by their corporations. The Qihoo 360IS antivirus, based on the BitDefender engine, was also "a new and unknown "security" program based out of China". It has turned out to be a success and a good product. In China, the Chinese version has helped Qihoo to gain market share from Baidu and other large Chinese sites so those competitors are also producing anti-virus products. I'm not sure if that is why Tencent now have an English-language antivirus but they're likely to make a better job of it than the mediocre Baidu antivirus which also uses the Avira engine. view

Automatically Dim Your PC Screen In The Evening 4 weeks 1 day ago Remah There are options other than blaming your ISP. Most PCs are uniquely identified and their geographics locations are often very precisely identified from information gathered with or without your permission on the Internet. At the highest level, most IP addresses are allocated to organizations (ISPs and the like) so their country and maybe city or region/province are known. Accuracy increases further from more detailed location-aware services. You can even read about specific applications. Firefox web browser is upfront about this in their Firefox FAQ on the same topic. view

As mentioned in my other post ( see www.techsupportalert.com/content/reminder-if-you-use-windows-just-get-fl... ) when I tried F.lux I found it too reddish for me. I also wasn't happy that it didn't have a portable version. Well, I have been trying SunsetScreen for the past week and I like it. It gives me better control over the colors and there's a portable version that's stealth too. I have also been in contact with the developer and I find he's very responsive - another plus.

Now, I know some people aren't too fond of programs running all the time, but you can easily overcome that by creating a task in Task Scheduler. Configure the task to start SunsetScreen at, say, 35 mins before sunset everyday and you're good to go. You can even add the argument "/hidewindow" (without quotes) to make it start silently in the system tray. In fact, when I raised a query with the developer, it was he who told me about that argument/parameter.

Personally, I've even started to experiment with the "Day" color. If I manage to adjust the color such that it would reduce the daytime strain on my eyes then it would be doubly useful.

It's a keeper so far.

[Edit]
It looks like the developer has joined us.

Welcome Daniel errr... I mean twinbee. It's always nice to see a developer taking such a keen interest in his software. :-)

How can any freeware site recommend this website / program when it,
a) self-proclaims that it has a "100% Clean in Install" yet tests @ 1/57 in a basic scanner;
b) self proclaims that it is a "Trusted Company" with no documentation to back that claim up with; and,
c) has a website that is copyrighted 2013?

Not OK.

Did you have Flux open at the time? Make sure Flux is closed before testing. Was the flickering during the time it said "Transitioning to night" or "Transitioning to day" at the top right? If so, that may not be fixed then for you. If that happens again, please let me know, and then try changing the transition phase to 10 seconds, and see if the problem is lessened or gone.

Best Free Registry Cleaner 4 weeks 1 day ago Papoy

"Do registry cleaners give me any performance advantage??? The answer is NO... you read correctly, NO. Unless you got infected with a virus and it wasn't cleaned-up correctly or a program wasn't uninstalled correctly where the registry cleaner can be useful there isn't any benefit in cleaning the registry."

"I personally have used registry cleaners when I need to remove failed uninstalls or have been infected and had a "not so clean" virus removal but that's about it."

jorgeem1717

So you used registry cleaners to remove failed uninstalls or not-so-clean virus removal registry entries. If those entries didn't cause you any performance disadvantages, then why did you remove them? You could just let them pile up in your registry, right?

Best Free Program Uninstaller 4 weeks 1 day ago Remah One issue is probably that you are now running 64-bit Windows 8 and installing 64-bit applications which Revo Uninstaller Free cannot see because it is 32-bit. The paid Pro version does provide 64-bit compatibility but at a price. The Best Free Program Uninstaller article tells you this but the comment is under GeekUninstaller which sounds like it would be your best option to try: Although Revo will work on a 64bit system the free version doesn't fully support 64bit, whereas GeekUninstaller supports and works on both 32 and 64bit and when running on 64bit Windows system GeekUninstaller runs as a native 64bit application. One last point to mention GeekUninstaller doesn't automatically create a system restore point before uninstalling a program so it may be ideal for the user to remember to do that themselves when they intend to uninstall a program. view

FYI: i have been using MiniTool Partition Wizard v7.7 for a long time and it's worked like a charm. Very happy with it.

It's been alerting me that there's a new version, so i downloaded it. It is version 9.0 dated January 14, 2015. They hosted it at cnet (download.com), so i was worried. But i looked it up at virustotal.com and none of the AV's reported PUP.

I installed it and it did not appear to do anything untoward (or "unwanted"). It DID open a browser window to
www.partitionwizard.com/feedback/install-partition-wizard.html

I used it to shrink a parition on a new external USB 3.0 2TB drive and create a 1GB partition in front of it. And it worked fine. Seemed to preserve the existing data. (All i did to check was just browse the folders and files tho.)

Here's the install file details:

Hi MidnightCowboy or anyone that might like to respond.

Sorry in advance if this is getting redundant, but I landed here looking for an alternative to the (free) Revo because I'm so fed up with it after a few years of being fine with it (seems like the latest free Revo has remained the worst). Ever since my forced upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1, my Vaio is way too slow, & Revo can't seem to 'see' half the stuff Windows uninstaller can 'see' & vice versa.

I was gonna try IObit - only because it was used in a YouTube video I used to successfully fix Firefox on an old Acer (running XP) that Revo very recently basically destroyed (I was trying to update it for a friend/make some room).
SO my main question is re: the Revo review & comment after UNHAPPY FACE: "Can remove other unrelated files with disastrous consequences..."

Since it's #1-ish - is there another free one you would recommend that's Revo-ish without the "...disastrous consequences..." for someone that doesn't know which files to save or put back & more 64-bit friendly? THANK YOU!

All of these applications share a fatal flaw as far as I'm concerned. None of them could automatically detect full-screen applications (games, movies..etc), so they interfere with their colors. And manually disabling and enabling as a solution is just absurd.

Hi, thanks- this has a very user friendly GUI.

I use RedshiftGUI, which allows colour control better than f.lux, and uses half the memory of Sunset Screen.

http://maoserr.github.io/projects/redshiftgui/

(Noted Sunset Screen requires .NET 3.5 or higher - I don't think RedshiftGUI does).

RedshiftGUI is also sensitive to geographic location, which you can look up by IP address, which means (hopefully!) the times adjust accordingly.

@ Mr Wednesday,
I was expecting the results you experienced when I went to sign up but, it turned out to be easier than expected. I clicked on "Download and Install" and it said I had to be a member of the the free version (NC, No Charge) forum so I:

1) clicked on the link, filled out the registration

2) went to (and followed) the verification link sent to my email

3) then I went back to the link in Rob's article and followed it, then clicked on the "Download and Install" link again

4) made sure I was still logged into the NC forum before clicking the "Next" button

5) chose my version, hit the "Next" button and d/loaded the small installer

6) when running the d/l'ed installer I had to tell it (by clicking on the 'pop-up' about not detecting which "Maya" version I had previously installed, to "show all" versions of Maya and let me choose my version) to install only the RenderMan Pro version (the top choice) with no Maya support.

The online installer (surprisingly) only took a few seconds for me. The directory where I installed the program was only 20MB's or so, the bulk of the d/l'ed 499MB's was in an .exe file along with a .conf/.ini type file in a non program file location,

The only thing is, a better title might read
"... now offers a Free Version" because the "Full" program cost $499 and up. There is no "Official Support" with the Free version, only other users help in the NC, No Charge support forum, which may be adequate along with the tutorials and other documentation.

You can use RenderMan by itself with the command-line, and render 3D data in RenderMan's native "RIB" file format. These RIB files are the backbone of any RenderMan pipeline and are highly customizable, offer Python bindings, and allow many types of data to be converted to RIB and rendered with RenderMan.

How to Check the Size and Reclaim Disk Space from WinSxS in Windows 8.1 1 month 3 days ago johnvk

Remah, i think i get what you're saying and i think i agree.

When i say "in a folder" i really only mean as far as what windows file explorer reports as the disk space used for that folder. I get that windows file explorer abstracts away the notion that files are not actually "in" folders, and presents a simplified picture to the user that they are.

I still think the basic problem of having a file with 2 or more hard links from 2 or more folders will be reported by windows file explorer as taking up space "in" both folders, even tho there is only 1 file on disk taking up space once, remains.

Hmm, i wonder. If you had a 1 TB drive, and you created a folder FTOP and two folders underneath it, FA, and FB, and you created a 1TB file in FA, and then a *hard link* to the same file in FB, i wonder what it would report? Has anyone done this?

I bet file -> properties on the disk would read 1TB used (not 2TB) cuz it is looking at actual files on disk, not files listed in folders.

I bet file -> properties on FA and FB would report size used as 1TB each, implying that there are 2TB used on this disk, when really they're just reporting the *same* 1TB each.

File -> properties on FTOP? Would it say 2TB used? I wonder.

EDIT: Well i was curious, and i just tried it. Not with a 1TB file but with a 81KB file and FTOP did report 162KB used, and even 162KB "used on disk" (cuz that's just a block size rounding thing). I used mklink /h to make the hardlink. Not sure if that matters.

That was fun.

Handbrake used to be my favorite encoder up until 0.9.8 but it went downhill from there.

That being said, VidCoder is basically HandBrake (GUI) done right, its far more stable and supports all of its necessary functions while providing a simple and friendly interface, so thanks a lot for that suggestion.

I think you should highlight VidCoder more, I almost missed it while reading the article.

Umm. I use Macrium Reflect Free - downloaded directly from the Macrium website - on a Windows 7 64-bit machine just fine.

That being said - I always do the following for each PC:

1. Download and install Macrium Reflect Free - including the PE data - and reboot.

2. Make a Windows PE bootable USB on the PC I am going to image. This is important because you will need to pick the right PE version for your machine. Additionally, you will need to check whether or not you need to enable UEFI support, etc.

3. Once you have made this USB - boot the PC off the USB.

4. Now - in the windows PE environment - use this to make an image of your drive.

I, personally, prefer this method as it means the drive I am making an image of is not in use at the time.

I followed your link and read all the post and Thank You but what a pain in the aspirin bottle to run it using cmd prompt. It took the "G" right out of GUI. If one were to run the trial version of Maya and RM in Returnil or Sandboxie to evaluate the program(s) repeatedly you could, make believe your Bill Murray and photo-realistically render a groundhog, better yet render Andie MacDowell over and over and ...
after all it was a Pixar film.

After using Freemake for quite some time, and being pleased with the results, I finally consented to an update that they had been nag screening about for months. Big Mistake. Along with the update came a vicious piece of malware/adware
called "Express Find". It caused a black rectangle to appear at the bottom center of my (FF) browser screen which protruded about 2" from bottom and about 4"wide. There was an "X" in upper right hand corner but it did not close the rectangle. When clicked it redirected my browser to some very shabby websites. (per WOT) . Got rid of it by running avast scan which picked it up and deleted it. Beware

Update:

Just ran an MBAM scan. It found and quarantined 15 items classified as "PUP's" all connected to "Express Find" although previous to this scan browser appeared to be running cleanly.

CAUTION,
from the RenderMan site,

[QUOTE]
RenderMan itself is not animation software and requires scene data from compatible CG modeling and animation authoring software or other external sources to generate photorealistic images. RenderMan is most commonly used with such well known software solutions as Autodesk's Maya, Maxon's Cinema4D, Side Effects Houdini, and The Foundry's KATANA.
[END QUOTE]

This info did not seem to fully surface until the 500MB initial install was complete. So, here's the dollar 2.98 question, Is Cinema4D, Houdini or KATANA free?

Hey Rob,
Which option did you choose to be able to utilize RenderMan, surely not the "TRIAL" version of MAYA.

Agreed. That's part of what I like about Gizmo's Freeware and MajorGeeks. Not everyone is an experienced PC user. Unfortunately, more and more freeware are becoming bundleware. I will continue to use programs like PDFCreator and IZArc, but even I no longer go click-click!

You should give PDFCreator a try and experience the features as per my last post. And, advise users to disconnect from the internet prior to installing a program.

I went to the Orba Design site and opened up their template with LibreOffice Calc, and it worked fine. But I didn't try their converter.

I found out that GEDCOM was started by the LDS and just kind of grew from there, with some companies making extensions to it for various things.GEDCOM is text based, but others like Excel and LO spreadsheets and Gramps's are XML. There's no standard, or official sanctioning entity to evaluate new formats or features and make them standard. Us engineers have the IEEE, which is why your wireless card works with your router.

I won't reply any further. Just want to point out that Win 7 has a dism.exe but it does not have the necessary parsing parameters. I tried Disk Cleanup in both regular and admin modes, but it doesn't even touch the winsxs files and folders. Oh well, I've still 70% of my C: drive free so I'll just live with the 11 gigs of files in my winsxs folder. Thanks anyway.

It doesn't work. I'm running Win 7 Pro on a 64 bit machine. My C:/Windows/winsxs folder contains 11.3 GB in 14,330 directories. I'd like to reclaim what I can of the space these folders are using.

I tried your solution for disk cleanup (cleanmgr) for Win 7 but even with every box checked, it only listed 7.85 Mb and none were in the winsxs folder.

I then tried dism.exe and found it to be active in Win 7, but the parsed parameters gave me an error message. Can you help me? Thanks.

You can also do this through disk cleanup in the GUI now easily.

Just open "disk cleanup" by typing it in the search bar.
click to clean-up system files, cleanup will relaunch in admin mode
check "Windows Update Cleanup" and whatever options you want.

Thanks for yours & Vandamme's prompt replies. I hope he sees this as well.
Looking around, I started putting information into a free account at FamilySearch.org. I ASSUME since they have access to LDS data, that would be most helpful, and I have found several ancestors already listed.
I did NOT check on their export options, but I think this is most helpful for my needs.
My question had to do with Excel, that I have most experience in, would be best way to enter data and give me most flexibility in whatever program(s) I might discover later. And being tech dangerous, I don't know anything about GEDCOM at all.
I think I am going to continue with FamilySearch. If you or anyone has comments on going that direction, I would welcome input.
As to my original question, after your comments, I did a quick search and http://orba-design.com/ged.php offers a method to import excel to GEDCOM format.
I did NOT explore at this time, and only put it here in case someone is looking for ways to follow my approach using Excel.
Thanks again for you help.

Best Free PDF Writer Software 1 month 4 days ago Anupam You were not connected to the internet while installing and that's why you did not get the screen where they offer extra software. Still, that thing is there, and therefore, PdfCreator remains bundleware, and so will advise people to be careful during installation. I did not say it was bundled with OpenCandy, but something similar.. which shows software recommendation during install. view
Best Free PDF Writer Software 1 month 4 days ago EldonW

I installed PDFCreator on 8 December 2014, and don't remember everything about the install. But, no OpenCandy installed. I always use "Expert Settings". That allows you to not install the extra language files, Image2PDF and PDF Architect. The later is not included in the setup file. I am NOT connected to the internet when installing programs, therefor it didn't install. Image2PDF is less than 1 MB. It allows you to create a PDF of multiple images. The complete install is 30 MB.

What I like about PDFCreator is the "merge documents" feature. You can open a document in Word, a spreadsheet in Excel, a presentation in PowerPoint, etc. and save the lot as a PDF.

Also, it allows you to send the 'print job' to a second printer, or to your email client as an attachment, or both. In a nutshell, you can set PDFCreator to auto-save the document in a pre-selected location without opening it in a PDF reader, print it with your actual printer, and open it as an attachment in your email client. It doesn't get much better than that.

TIP. Do not install a program while connected to the internet. Read everything in every window. Choose advanced/custom install. That's how I avoid the junk.

Best Free Genealogy or Family Tree Software 1 month 5 days ago okrick ttowndick, Vandamme is absolutely correct. Excel is not supported by any genealogy program import. GEDCOM is supported by all of them. I suggest you start using one of the programs. If you aren't happy then export the date you've entered to a GEDCOM file and import that to the new program. I do suggest you start with the program with the most capability. I can speak from experience that it is very difficult to go back and add details to records you already entered. I originally started my research with a program that is still commercially available but I became frustrated with its limitations. Even with a GEDCOM import, I essentially had to review hundreds of records when I upgraded to a far superior program. Gramps would be an excellent choice for a program one is unlikely to outgrow. view

Every genealogy propgram will import and export to a GEDCOM file. I imported my dad's Roots Magic GEDCOM file into Gramps and it worked great.

You will run into trouble if you start saving data that isn't included in the GEDCOM scheme. Proprietary formats could include sources, images, recordings. Those are fine as long as the company stays in business and you want to pay what they ask, but if you share the data with someone else they probably won't have the same program. If you use Excel (or the open source LibreOffice Calc) you will have your own format to sort out.

Gramps seems to be the only real open source genealogy program. It is better than the old PAF from the Mormons, and has a ton of capabilities. I back it up in their format, but also back up occasionally in GEDCOM.

Wow. Very helpful, but I am SO confused.
I just got several pages of geneology from a cousin and want to put them in a program.
HOWEVER, I want to keep from doing a lot of unnecessary typing - oops I don't like THAT program, THIS one is better, starting from scratch.
So I thought I would put data in an EXCEL worksheet and import into a program. Then if I decide to change programs, be able to do the same thing.
So I'm looking for a program with import/export capability.
HOWEVER, since many of the comments here look like Greek, I may be way over my head.
SO, can anyone tell me best program to use with data import feature?
and please remember, I am techno-challenged.

Thanks!

Best Free PDF Writer Software 1 month 5 days ago Anupam Did you install the software yet? I downloaded and installed the software in Sandboxie. Like other software which are installed with OpenCandy, PdfCreator too, during the installation showed a screen for installing extra software. Checkboxes are available by unchecking which the extra software can be avoided. Also, during the first installation screen, there is the checkbox for "Expert settings", which is the same as custom installation. You have to check that box, to avoid the extra bundled software, otherwise I don't think there will be any screen shown to avoid the extra software. Also during the installation, I noticed checkboxes for Image2Pdf and PdfArchitect (costing space around 65MB), which are not necessary for the function of the software from what I guess. All in all, I will continue to avoid PdfCreator, and keep using Bullzip Pdf Printer. view

Best Free Encryption Utility for Cloud Storage 1 month 5 days ago mradovan

Thanks for a great article - very, very informative.

I stumbled across a new-ish service called Zoolz (zoolz.com), you may want to include it in the Spideroak/Tresorit basket - client-side encryption, etc. Pro would be the price ($30 p/m for an unlimited number of users). An obvious “con” would be the fact that they screen file names, in order to identify and ban illegal file sharing.

I tried out Spideroak and I must admit I find the user interface rather counterintuitive. It would also periodically fail to synchronise between three test machines. It may well be that I didn’t set its two phase process (backup/sync) correctly… Anyway, I feel this should be easier to achieve than it is right now.

A Reminder: If You Use Windows, Just Get Flux 1 month 5 days ago Joe A.TT

I agree with Jojo. When I tried F.lux some time back I couldn't stand the reddish hue. Also, I prefer portable software whenever I can get it but F.lux doesn't have a portable version. The people over at PortableApps.com were trying to make it portable but it looks like that project has stalled.

Recently, I discovered a similar app called SunsetScreen ( http://www.skytopia.com/software/sunsetscreen/ ). It was first released on 2015.03.15 so it's pretty new. It also offers a certain amount of flexibility not present in F.lux. And... there's a portable version too.
